I've had the great benefit of working with Scott Barella and the Cornerstone Counseling team in individual, family and group settings, and I cannot praise Cornerstone enough for the positive impact Scott and his team have had on some extremely challenging issues being addressed in all of these modalities. Scott's skill, insight and experience have helped navigate through not only interpersonal, psychological, and behavioral issues with clients ranging from child through adult ages, he offers a very pragmatic, down-to-earth, thoughtful and empathetic approach to everything from basic day-to-day life strategies, to analysis and treatment of deeper therapeutic issues. In this regard, I have found it both unique and tremendously beneficial that Scott's ability to address issues and provide support not strictly from a purely psychological and therapeutic standpoint, but also from a strategic day-to-day solutions-oriented life-coach perspective as well, was not only more comprehensive than any other therapeutic providers I have worked with, but also extremely effective in treating the "whole" person, and the real-life issues being faced by clients from these multiple "fronts". Scott is especially adept at helping clients to dissect often complex or overwhelming feelings or issues, so that they can be identified and addressed more effectively. His ability to facilitate clients in developing more clear and manageable insights into issues is tremedously empowering. I continue to utilize many practical tools and strategies learned at Cornerstone on a near daily basis - something I cannot say about many clinicians with whom I have worked, and those tools continue to make a very positive impact in my life. Scott is an extremely intuitive and empathetic clincian, a remarkably patient listener, and even had my children feeling both comfortable and validated while working with them. As a group facilitator, he is especially adept and extremely effective while maintaining a very positive and engaging dynamic. His availability both on and off schedule has literally been second to none, and his interest in client's welfare is deeply genuine. As a therapist and a counselor, I cannot say enough good things about Scott and the entire Cornerstone team. But as a part of your personal life-support-team, Scott is an incredible resource, and an absolute gem. read more

I'm writing this review to give Scott Barrella the recognition he truly deserves. My name is Kevin Hunt, and I've had the privilege of working with Scott Barrella. This review reflects not only his dedication as a professional but also his character as an advocate for justice and fairness. Scott's practice aligns with the highest standards of ethics, morals, and fairness. He is deeply passionate about helping his clients, particularly fathers seeking to maintain meaningful relationships with their children. He is well-respected in the community, and I had the honor of participating in his parenting and domestic violence classes. These sessions were transformative for me--Scott's guidance helped me understand the legal process and navigate some of the toughest moments in my life. As an African-American male in Ventura County, I've experienced firsthand the challenges of racism, bias, and systemic privilege in the family court system. However, Scott Borrello is far from any form of bias or prejudice. He is a man of dignity and unwavering commitment to justice. His practices are rooted in fairness and the best interests of the children, rather than being influenced by wealth, privilege, or external pressures. Unlike other monitors, like Denise Riley A+ visitation services Scott does not allow external factors--such as influence from attorneys or financial status--to dictate his decisions. He maintains a steadfast focus on creating peaceful and meaningful relationships between children and their parents. This is in stark contrast to my experiences with other services, such as Denise Riley's A Plus One Visitation, where I found that fairness and the best interests of the children often took a backseat to external influences. I strongly recommend Scott Barrella's services to anyone seeking a monitor who operates with integrity, fairness, and compassion. His dedication to his clients and their families is unmatched, and I would caution anyone against using services such as Denise Riley's that fail to uphold the same ethical and professional standards. Scott Barrella is truly a beacon of fairness and respect in this field, and I cannot thank him enough for the support and guidance he has provided to me and countless others. read more

This is the second posting of this review which Scott had pulled by Yelp. Earlier today I wrote in a very negative review of the director of this center. Magically, it has disappeared or moved so far down the list as to be gone. I noticed lots of other reviews that seemed to have experienced the same problem. Does Cornerstone have the authority to remove negative reviews and replace them with fake positive reviews? The director charged a penalty fee of $105 for 3 absences from the Anger Management class that my son was attending. There is no where in the contract stated that he has the right to do that or determine what the amount of a penalty fee will be for a missed absence. When my son alerted the director to the fact that Zoom was not working and having technical difficulties making it impossible to attend the class, he said that's too bad and you will have to pay the penalty fee regardless and if you want to get reimburse for the expense, contact Zoom. Zoom, obviously would not reimburse anyone for the web site being down. The director didn't care. My son contacted the Ventura County courthouse and the Probation Department and was told that his case had been dropped making the requirement to take the class, moot. My son contacted the director and asked for a reimbursement of fees. Scott told him "nope, good luck". He knew that even though he had overcharged penalty fees that the contract had been written to protect the director from any legal recourse. Not sure if that is even legal. I suggested that anyone who needed to take the course to consider alternative options rather than Cornerstone. Not 5 minutes after posting the review that my son's phone was ringing off the hook from Scott who also attempted to contact me multiple times and left a voice mail to return the call. This is all harassment since he can't handle negative reviews. In an act of retribution, he contacted the Oxnard Police department to look further into the case and attempt to intimidate my son by texting him that the case was still open. I sincerely question whether the positive reviews of this site are real. Quit pulling down reviews that are contrary but true. read more

I recently completed a full 52-week program with Cornerstone Counseling led by Scott Barrella, and I can honestly say that the experience had a meaningful and lasting impact on my life. When I first began the program, it was a requirement connected to a legal situation from 2023, and at the time I didn't fully realize how valuable the process would become for my personal growth. Over the course of the year, Scott created an environment that was structured, respectful, and genuinely focused on helping people grow and change. His approach is professional, direct, and compassionate at the same time. He challenges you to take accountability for your actions while also giving you the tools and perspective needed to improve as a person. The weekly Zoom sessions were organized and engaging. Each class focused on real topics that apply to everyday life--communication, emotional awareness, accountability, respect in relationships, and personal responsibility. Scott does not simply lecture; he encourages real discussion and reflection. Because of that, you don't just sit through the program--you actually learn from it. What stood out to me the most was how seriously Scott takes the responsibility of guiding people who are trying to better themselves. He holds everyone to a high standard, but at the same time he truly wants to see people succeed and move forward in a healthier direction. Over the course of the 52 weeks, I saw real changes in how I think, communicate, and handle situations in my life. The program helped me develop a much stronger understanding of accountability, emotional control, and respectful communication. Those lessons extend far beyond the program itself and will stay with me long into the future. If someone is required to attend a program like this, I would absolutely recommend Cornerstone Counseling and Scott Barrella. What could easily feel like just another requirement instead becomes an opportunity for real growth and self-improvement. I'm grateful for the experience and proud to have completed the program. read more

Replying to Mr. Barrella's January 24, 2026 response, which I have attached here. For those reading this review, I think it is important that Mr. Barrella's own words be preserved. In this response, Mr. Barrella wrote: "I still remember you as an excellent participant in our program." Those are his words, not mine. I encourage readers to review that statement alongside the other information, documents, communications, timelines, and reporting that I have referenced and draw their own conclusions. Mr. Barrella also invited me to call him regarding these issues. I have no interest in private phone calls. I have no interest in off-the-record conversations. If Mr. Barrella wishes to address any of the questions I have raised, he is welcome to do so in writing. In fact, if Mr. Barrella wants a written release allowing him to discuss my case with anyone he chooses, I would be happy to sign one. There is no need for a private conversation. There is no need for a private meeting. If there are answers to the questions I have raised, put them in writing and let people evaluate them for themselves. That is all I have ever asked. The screenshot attached here is preserved so readers can review Mr. Barrella's response in its entirety and decide for themselves what weight they believe it deserves. read more

I can't speak highly enough about Scott, the instructor for my domestic violence, anger management, and parenting classes at Cornerstone Counseling. He is kind, compassionate, and truly cares about his students. From the start, Scott creates an environment that fosters a brotherly bond, reminding me of that one high school or college teacher you never forget--the one who made learning enjoyable and engaging. His lessons are well-structured, and the videos he incorporates add depth and understanding. Scott makes complex subjects feel relatable and easy to grasp. The discussions in class with fellow students make you realize you're not alone in your journey. Everyone has a story, and these shared experiences build a supportive community where we all help each other move forward. One of the things I appreciate most is that Scott holds his students accountable. He doesn't just teach the material; he ensures you're doing the work, showing up, and staying consistent. His extensive knowledge across all three courses really shows, and for an added bonus, his networking and rapport-building are top-notch. Cornerstone Counseling is affordable, and my advice to anyone considering these classes: just show up, be accountable, and don't quit. You won't find a better guide through these difficult times. read more

I ended up having to take a year long session at Cornerstone Counseling Center with Scott Barella as the head counselor. At my first session my response to this type of program was probably like most students, " I don't need this , I'm fine ". Man was I wrong and I found myself looking forward to my once a week sessions . Scott had a very interesting and informative way about his teachings and messages. The group I was in was very diverse in our ways of life and I found it amazing how professional and talented Scott was at getting this large group of very different people to ALL get on the same page and participate with enthusiasm. This large group of complete strangers became very comfortable working as a team to become better people under the expert direction and teachings of Scott Barella and Cornerstone Counseling Center. Life throws us curveballs at times and I can absolutely say that Scott has taught me how to handle them the correct way with ease and confidence ! I started out this review with " I had to take a year long session and when I had completed the course I now change that to "I got to take a year long course" It turned out to be a GREAT learning experience for me ! Thank You Scott Barella and Cornerstone Counseling Center ! read more

I recently completed a 52 week course of domestic violence counseling classes, and I can confidently say that it has been one of the most impactful experiences of my life. The program was both enlightening and empowering, providing a safe space for individuals to share their stories and learn from one another. My peers were highly knowledgeable and compassionate, creating an environment where I felt comfortable discussing my experiences. They offered valuable insights into the dynamics of domestic violence, helping me to understand not only the impact it had on my life but also the patterns and behaviors associated with it. Each session was well structured, covering a range of topics from understanding emotional abuse to developing healthy communication skills. What I appreciated the most was the mix of educational content and interactive activities, which allowed for personal reflection and group discussion. This mixtures facilitated deeper connections with my peers, making us feel less isolated in our journeys. One of the key takeaways for me was the emphasis on self empowerment and building resilience. The classes provided practical tools and resources that I could apply in my every day life moving forward. read more

Making the best of a bad situation. I was required to take a 52 week domestic violence class for a DCFS case. I live outside Ventura County so finding an in person class proved to be difficult. Family court recently changed its policies about doing "zoom" classes. For me that was a chance to enroll in a class with Scott Barrella. He was able to get me enrolled in my online 52 week DV class. I immediately felt comfortable once I talked to him on the phone. Over the course of taking my classes with cornerstone I have seen Scott take on many types of students. I prefer doing online classes and Cornerstone has stained the process. The classes are well organized and run smoothly. Scott makes it easy to connect with the courts wishes. Getting progress reports was not a difficult process and were provided in a timely manner. I have learned that Mr Barrella is connected to his students and attentive to each students individual case issues. His class has been a clear example of how one can make the best of a bad situation. This was a bad situation for me to be in but great experience with Cornerstone. Damon read more

This guy that runs this place I think his name is Steve he is a total hustler! He will ask you to get to the program early and then show up late, ask you to do paperwork and then rush you through it so that you sign a contract locking you into 15 weeks of therapy even if you go there voluntarily! I called this guy just ask some questions about the contract and it seemed to me like he is the one that needed anger management classes because he got an attitude immediately and he told me just to go check online because the contract was on online! so I asked him since we were on the phone can't I just ask you a question and he got more of an attitude! Then it just went downhill from there. This guy is a total hustler and all he wants is your money we spent an hour and 15 minutes talking shit and not even 45 minutes into bookwork because it's more like a locker room situation there where everybody just talks shit and there's no actual therapy happening! So if you want an anger management class to help you do not go to this class because this class is bullshit! read more

I completed the 52-week Anger Management program through Cornerstone, and my experience was excellent from start to finish. Scott was incredible. He was professional, respectful, and organized throughout the entire process. He guided participants through the program while still holding everyone accountable and focused on personal growth. What stood out most was how much Scott genuinely cares. You can see it in the way he invests in helping people make positive changes and real progress in their lives. The program had a meaningful impact on me and truly changed my life for the better. The classes taught me practical tools for managing emotions, improving communication, and making better decisions. What could have felt like simply checking a box became a valuable learning experience that provided insights I will carry with me for years to come.
