Our oldest was in Mrs. Olga Nguyen's class instead of attending TK, and she was more than well prepared for kindergarten. She has such a calm, kind, and respectful way of speaking to the children--it's clear she truly understands and values them as individuals. The kids respond so well to her; they listen and engage because she speaks to them in a way that makes them feel seen and heard. She meets them at their level, both emotionally and academically. Special thanks to Ms. Maria, Ms. Sara who have also been shining stars of our experience. All of the teachers we have had for both of our kids have helped to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment.

From math and science (his favorite subjects) to yoga, gardening and sports day - the school really strives to develop the whole child and their place in the world. And the camaraderie that the parents develop is great - the school board really does listen to the parents and it shows in the content of the monthly newsletters as well as some of the projects that we are asked to participate in to spruce up the school grounds. I left this school after my son attended K-3. They definitely have a principal that is rude to…read moreparents, as stated below. They also have an unfriendly vibe overall and, as stated, the principal comes off as uncaring in many areas yet overzealous with unfounded reprimands. I have never experienced a school with so many issues with infighting amongst the students - including bullying. We gave it our best "go" and they do have engaged, dedicated teachers and staff, but the problems are at the top. The last straw was spring 2019 when a 1st grade parent (and the husband of a Portola teacher) approached my child and his friend over his own child's lost football. He interrogated them, preventing them from getting on their after-care bus; boarded the bus to further interrogate the boys and, after being removed from the bus, followed the bus in his own car to the childcare facility (while filming it out the window with his cell phone) where he entered the childcare facility (totally against their protocol) and was finally prevented from his maniacal stalking escapade when the childcare director intervened. The experience was reported to the principal by the childcare director and myself and was handled ineptly and sans empathy. No one at the school or district level could tell me the student safety policy - I had to dig for it online. I took it next level (Superintendent) but was not heard. In the end, no one was able to tell me why my child was able to be verbally accosted for over 15 minutes - why the poor childcare bus driver had to act alone without school support staff - with a bus-load of children - and why this parent -- who is constantly on school property due to his own job and spouse-affiliation was never asked to sit with the boys and apologize or tell them they are safe and that THEY did the right thing (told the truth- that they did not have his son's football/which was later found) even though HE did not do right by them, or the other children or the young driver who was visibly shaken by the incident. The only person that DID react with professionalism, accurate sensitivity and safety protocol was the childcare director. I wonder if that 1st grade parent knows this director had to call an immediate safety meeting amongst her staff and afterward, a "stranger-danger" meeting with every child under her care that day? Shame on him, shame on the Portola principal and shame on the VUSD staff and management that wouldn't return my calls and couldn't answer basic safety questions about their school. It took them TWO months to call a meeting with me. Happily, we found a new school that has a warm, safe environment and professional, capable- seeming principal and staff-- so far so good!

I've never seen a principal engage with students the way Mr. Ruiz does. We've always felt welcome & part of the Portola family. Koleen the librarian is amazing. She's put on the best book fairs! The office staff are all very nice as well. The PFFO put on some pretty cool events for the kiddos last year. Portola Ninja Warrior is a fun day of fitness for the kids & the end of the year carnival was full of fun games, music & food. We're looking forward to more fun events this year. We're very happy to be part of such a great school.

My review is WAY overdue. We've been with Tutorific since December of 2019 and today is May 1st,…read more2025. Our kids start Tutorific at age 4 and continue until they begin 1st grade. There is no magic time, it's what we have decided is right for our kids. We utilize the reading program. Our oldest son, Evan ultimately worked on math too. He was in kindergarten via Zoom and struggled a bit. His tutor, Will started helping with the math and then all was good!!! Evan is currently in 4th grade. Our oldest daughter, Grace loved coming and playing the games with Matt. Playing games is one of many ways Tutorific teaches kids. She still asks me to play the reading games with her from time to time. Grace currently in 1st grade. Our 4.5 year old, Joey reads with the owner, Matt twice a week. He's in preschool and can easily sound out 6 letter words. Joey reads over 400 words by sight. Tutorific has a reward system in place. You reach certain milestones and go to the "PRIZE WALL!" Joey adores the prize wall. A reward system really helps Joey stay on track. It's amazing having kids that can read at such a young age. Our baby, Olivia can be found playing with toys and running around the Tutorific lobby twice a week while big brother, Joey is strengthening his reading skills. She'll start in a few years! I took screenshots of facebook posts my wife or I have posted over the years. I have so many wonderful things to say, I don't know what to write. I decided sharing our personal posts written for our family and friends would give you the best bird's eye view of how much we love Tutorific. We are moms who have feel like Tutorific is more than a place to help kids with homework. They have helped our kids learn to read but more importantly they helped our kids LOVE reading. Dario has been so patient with him, helping him stay focused and making learning feel manageable and positive. Even more amazing, my youngest son (who is just 4 years old) is learning how to read after I watched the progress of his brother. He usually has a hard time going to regular school or childcare, but somehow he absolutely loves going to tutoring and is always excited to bring his work box. He loves that Mr. Mat plays reading games and makes learning fun. The encouragement and connection they build with the kids make such a huge difference. We are so grateful to have found this place. They also moved to a new facility down the street which looks great. There is a comfortable sitting area and also a bonus yard for parents or students to sit for fresh air and greenery. Definitely recommend this place.
