Just received my 2nd grade son's star testing back and he is reading at a 5th grade level 9 months into the school year! I met with his teacher and she said he's one of the best in the class with their reading tests for comprehension. His spelling continues to improve as well. He's getting recognized by classmates for being intelligent. His general demeanor with school is relaxed and happy this year. It's such an enormous improvement since he began working with Elizabeth. Where have all the traditional phonics programs gone? They weren't in my daughter's kindergarten or first-grade private school classrooms. Starting to panic about halfway through my daughter's first-grade year, she was very behind, and I realized she didn't have a firm understanding and a very limited exposure to phonics. On a suggestion from a friend who had another friend, who'd completed the Cornerstone Academic Program with Elizabeth, I made the first phone call Right away, Elizabeth set me at ease. My daughter is learning to love reading and feels quite important that she knows reading rules that nobody else in our house does I sing Elizabeth's praises any chance I get. Mrs. Wayne connected well with our 7yo grandson immediately and he responded just as quickly. We felt our grandson was capable of reading well but lacked confidence and structure. And we were not at all certain of what he was accomplishing at school, given zoom classes, shortened in-class sessions, etc. Mrs. Wayne steadily taught him a defined body of reading "rules", which he integrated quickly and learned how and when to apply them when reading words with which he is unfamiliar. Confidence grew and we could see upward change in his reading ability on a weekly basis. We could not have been more thrilled. My middle schooler daughter has been taking reading and writing lessons from Mrs. Wayne since 3 years. Mrs. Wayne is an amazing teacher! She worked with my son when he was in 1st grade and helped him move from being a little behind in reading to being a confident reader that was reading beyond his grade level. A year and a half ago, despite our best efforts, my daughter (1st grade) was not keeping up with her peers in reading. She is a smart girl, but (much like her dear father), she struggles with rote memorization of random facts, and is someone who does FAR better when understanding the underlying concepts. She was bored with, and struggled with, memorizing hundreds of "snappy words" or "sight words", despite her interest in reading generally. When Elizabeth visited us, she agreed that "sight words" were heavily over used, and told us that in fact, "rule breaking" English words are rare. It just turns out, in popular education today, we have stopped teaching most of the English rules. During our daughter's weekly lessons, both my wife and I have enjoyed sitting in and learning the English rules that we never learned 30 years ago! Knowing our daughter, my wife and I knew immediately that she, in particular, would strongly benefit from further lessons in rule-based English phonics. In addition to the lessons themselves, our daughter really likes Elizabeth and enjoys her company. Since last year, my daughter's reading ability and interest have soared. With regular help and guidance from Elizabeth, our daughter has gained so much more insight than we ever could have anticipated. Since my wife and I almost always sit in on the lessons, we've also learned the rules ourselves, and reinforce them nightly during reading time. For us, this has been a small investment in our daughter, which has already had immediate benefits, and will continue to lay a strong foundation for her future many years from now. Mrs Wayne did an amazing job with our grandson! He really couldn't read when he started with her. He has some neurological issues which makes it a challenge for him to learn, but with Mrs. Wayne's teaching he progressed to reading above his grade level. Elizabeth is an amazing reading teacher. My son was behind in reading, which just made him nervous and more afraid to try. He has made SO much progress in his one-on-one sessions with Elizabeth.
