My wife is gluten intolerant as it gives her "bread head," as she becomes mentally sluggish; we asked about gluten free menu options and were informed about the beef and chicken plates; we ordered one of each and boy were we impressed! Both came with salad, spinach/greens, tomatoes, feta, cabbage and carrots; since I am not GF I also received wonderful pita. My wife and I were thrilled. Our relatives also greatly enjoyed their lentil soup and the meatball & rice plate. Afterwards the restaurant shared warm (hot) Cardamom tea. So good!! And the staff is so friendly and helpful. Their food was delicious and fresh! We really enjoyed their istanbul wraps, and you can sub out the meats for chicken, beef, or falafel. Their Turkish delight and baklava ARE SO GOOD! The people were so kind as well! They gave me great suggestions, were very friendly, and were just wonderful to interact with. Casual seating, seems to be lots of takeout orders too. I completely forgot to take pics of my food and the interior. The portions are big and the food is good. I was so surprised to see okra stew also known as Bamia. I got so excited because I had not eaten that stew since I was younger when my Middle Eastern neighbors/friends would make it for us. Corner Kitchen Pizzeria is the replacement for City Pizzeria just north of the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown. The corner suite had plenty of inside seating and some sidewalk tables along Sixth Ave. At the service counter were several pizza pies that were available for sale by the slice. Besides the standard fare of pizza, salads, subs, and wings, Turkish-based food was also offered. For example in the Chef's Special category, doner and lamb shank were listed. I chose the Moussaka which was served with rice. It was a variation from the Greek style in which eggplant was sliced and fried lightly in olive oil before being layered in a casserole with a mix of ground lamb, onions, tomato sauce, seasonings, and cheese sauce. At this place, the rice came separately while the eggplant was stewed in a dish with meat and sauce. There were a couple of issues with the execution of this Turkish moussaka. First, the eggplant was bland and required more spices and flavor. Second, the amount of ground meat in the dish was paltry. A better ratio of meat to vegetables was an area of needed improvement. For $16, the portion size was mediocre. My initial feeling of ordering the doner was justified after consuming the moussaka. read more

You could drive through all of California and not find a diner kebab this good! The berlin doner pita with beef is unbelievable. I've only had one this good overseas in Turkey / Germany but never did I think I'd get one here. You HAVE to try it! This place truly feels like an authentic Turkish restaurant. When you come if not in the mood for a doner kebab I would also recommend you try their eggs/breakfast dishes or their borek, which is probably the best I've had in the states. To top it all off they serve fresh orange juice. The service is also super nice, and I'm glad that I got to meet the owner. Super friendly guy. read more

I ordered the beef shawarma sandwich. It was quite salty and a bit greasy, and in the end left me with an unsettled stomach. The store is in a disgusting area of downtown, where I literally had to step over a pile of human excrement immediately outside of the store entrance. The restaurant is mostly clean inside, but the area outside really kills the appetite and appeal. The staff inside had a slight attitude that was a bit puzzling to me. I am Turkish, and I confirm both lahmacun and iskender tasted just like the authentic versions we have in Turkey. Finding original-tasting lahmacun and iskender is incredibly hard, but this place nailed it! I also tried the ispanakli borek, kazandibi, and kadaif dessert. They were also delicious and authentic. I love that they serve Turkish tea at the end of the meal, which is again very authentic Turkish dining experience. The staff was friendly and professional. The reasturant was clean and neat. Currently eating the best falafel I've had in my life from this place. It's called a pizzeria but it's mostly Turkish/Mediterranean food. Had to wait 15 or 20 minutes to get my to go order since they were busy but SO worth it. Our Turkish friends took us to this hidden gem. You would never know that this restaurant serves authentic Turkish food because of their name. But once you step inside you will see that they offer both Turkish/Mediterranean food as well as Pizza and salads. The owner was so nice and welcoming. He said that they will offer a bigger Turkish menu in a couple of weeks. We ordered a sampler of dips which consisted of humus, baba ganoush, Tzatziki, spicy Turkish salsa with homemade bread, Iskender Kebap, lahmacun, and kunefe. Everything was absolutely delicious. Tasted just like what I remember from Istanbul. It is a bit difficult to find parking in that area of the Gaslamp district but there is a parking lot close by. I hear during the weekdays this place is packed with customers as all the surrounding office buildings are in operation. It's a gem hidden in downtown. EVERYTHING is great but my favorites are the beef borek, and the white beans in tomato sauce over rice. You cannot go wrong with whatever you order. The portions are not for the faint. They are very generous. They even have Turkish sweets and desserts. They're open into the night up to 9 or 10. Go. Run. And order twice as much as you need so you can have some the next day. It's even better the next day. Parking is a bitch but it's worth it. We recently visited San Diego for five days, and were fortunate to have found Corner Kitchen on day one since it was two blocks from the Courtyard Marriott where we were staying. We returned every day during our visit. So many delicious items on the menu, and they offer the most beautiful Turkish delight that we have ever seen. We shared a menemen and borek breakfast, and even the pickiest of our eaters were so happy with the food an the experience. The staff was courteous, attentive, and ever-professional, and they run a beautiful, clean oasis in downtown. We were sad to leave and will surely miss our daily visits to Corner Kitchen. They need to take "Pizzeria" out of their name, as it's not even on their Mediterranean menu. We went there for a pizza, but they hardly offered any. The employees, while courteous, seemed unfamiliar with the menu, which had several printed items crossed out, and had trouble communicating in English.
