We were driving our ATV on the trail when the skies opened up, so we were in Spooner and found the Corner House Pub. The owner greeted us and poured us a beer and shared the story of this building and pointed out the tile floor is the original floor from the early 1900's. It's a beautiful location and he made an outstanding Bloody Mary (Wisconsin style with a ton of eats and a beer chaser). Once the weather improved, we got back on the trail. It's a great location and the owner suggested where we should go for dinner in nearby Rice Lake. From the looks of things at this old school supper club, this will be a winner too! The only thing to be aware of is he does cash only--no credit cards. A great day indeed! Thanks Corner House Inn!

Great atmosphere. Owner was working and was very personable. The pizza is good too. Stop in and see for yourself and say Hi to Jim.

It always seems like there is a really relaxed vibe and the low lighting and heated bar really add to this experience. I used to think that The Abbey was just a bar (by no means a bad thing!) but I stopped in for lunch and had a spectacular pulled pork sandwich a few days ago. Dare I say it... The best pulled pork sandwich in downtown Menomonie?! The sauce sounds like it would be weird because there is mustard in it but I can confirm that it is delicious and really makes the sandwich. Props to The Abbey for having a limited menu and having a few really good dishes instead of a bunch of average bar food. Apart from the atmosphere, food and staff there are really good drink specials at The Abbey as well! Every day there is a near unbearable special. When school is in session these deals are definitely taken advantage of by the Stout students. If I had to credit this place for just one thing it would be that the building itself is such a relaxing place. No flashing lights, no overly loud music and no amateur DJ screaming at the top of their lungs like other bars in Menomonie. Even yet, if inside is a little too much you can always step out onto the patio. If you're looking for a relaxed cocktail in Menomonie this is your place.

And just when you think your whole day is shot because the slaw has broccoli (we know that Wisconsinites loathe anything that did not have parents) bam - there's bacon in it! Abbey (from the Abbey) is the coolest Abbey I know. Much cooler than any other Abbey, including Westminster and Downton. My dog enjoys the back patio where she can chill and dream about all the wonderful smells that waft from the kitchen. The sandwiches are amazing. The drinks are made well and the free chaser is like a prize my liver didn't know it won.

Saturday I set out for a short brewery trek of three breweries... I was excited to visit my 363rd,…read more4th and 365th breweries! Quite the array my palate experienced! The first brewery.... fine, just fine, nothing great. The last brewery? Off the charts... fantastic!! Balsam Lake? Yikes..... I arrived to a full patio and quite the busy inside. Good omen, right? Once I began tasting through my flight... two words came to mind...not sure if they're correct or... but they were... Tourist Trap....? I built a flight of four, four styles I commonly order, so I'm familiar with them and they're preferred. My flight consisted of #3 Angler's Amber, #7 Stump Bay Stout, #17 Marges Doppleganger Doppelbock & #18 Haugen All The Honey. The Honey beer was delicious and was he only one I could stomach to want to finish. The Angler's Amber? WHAT is that, is that a Bitter Amber? That is NOT a style....for good reason! This beer I could only take three sips of... in disbelief that it was that bad! The stout and doppelbock....just not good. Three days later and I'm still at a loss for words to describe what my palate was dealing with? Being to nearly 400 breweries I wouldn't consider myself a slouch, nor definitely an expert but when three of four beers are unpalatable... it's not me... it's the beer. Such a disappointing experience. Getting the $16.00 tab for what I considered awful beer sure didn't help ease the unfulfilling feeling. Maybe I should have opted for the Boysenberry Blonde that I debated and a beertender said was her current go-to? This brewery is three years old so...maybe they're still working kinks out? New brewer? I may have to peruse untappd for other beer ratings but at this juncture I wouldn't go back, just bummed out by the experience as a whole.

The Blood Orange seltzer is refreshing, and my favorite so far. The buffalo wings and steak fries were served piping hot, and well seasoned. There was plenty of TV's to watch BOTH the Packers and Vikings games. We will definitely be back! Super-friendly service, too! Thank you, Balsam Lake Brewery & Market, for an enjoyable Sunday!!
