Received an email that today is National Croissant day. I headed over to get a chicken croissant sandwich and a chocolate croissant for late lunch. Overall the place was tidy and looked nice. There was a little line but the service was good. I ordered mine to go because I didn't want to get stuck in rush hour traffic. This was my first time trying both. Let me state for the record: Worst. Breakfast. Ever. This morning I was running some early errands that took me past the Westfield UTC shopping center, so I decided to stop at the Corner Bakery for breakfast.I ordered the All-American Scramble -- scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, and toast. Nothing fancy, just a classic, straightforward breakfast. What arrived was exactly what it sounds like (see accompanying photo): a pile of scrambled eggs, a couple of scoops of potatoes, two strips of bacon, and a single slice of toast. Very ordinary in appearance. It was anything but ordinary in execution. The eggs were cold to lukewarm and clumpy. Cutting into them required real effort -- they had fused into a rubbery mass. The flavor could only be described bland (with hints of sour). The potatoes were cold and hard, almost as if they had never seen a pan (definitely not frozen, just...neglected). Then came the bacon. I've never had a more disappointing encounter with one of the world's greatest meats. We've all experienced crisp, burnt, soggy, or perfectly done bacon -- but I'm guessing very few people have ever tasted anything quite like this. The two strips had the flavor and texture of pressboard -- the sad, flimsy cousin of cardboard. It was a tragic excuse for a meat product. And finally, the toast. Who among us didn't start their culinary journey by making toast as a kid? Easy, right? Apparently the team at this Corner Bakery has yet to master the toaster's complex mysteries. For a place with "Bakery" in the name, they should at least get bread right. If you've ever heard stories of people in desperate times making bread from sawdust, you'll have a pretty good idea of what this tasted like. (To be fair, I'm sure sawdust bread would have more flavor.) For context, I've worked in food service and hospitality, including a serious stint on breakfast shifts. When you know what you're doing, a solid plate of bacon, eggs, potatoes, and toast is not hard to execute. There is plenty of seating inside and a patio wrapping around the outside as well, so even if they're busy they've got the space. Order: Choose two - half club (oven-roasted turkey, bacon, cheddar, tomato, mayonnaise, grilled sourdough) & mac n cheese, comes with a side of your choice chips/fruit/bread, I took the chips (bag of plain lays). I loved though that this location has spacious space for you to eat inside. The food was great as expected, but that was about it. Stopped in for a late lunch. My wife wanted the ham & turkey on a croissant. It exists on the web page, but does not exist at this location (?!) I had the chicken carbonara- good! But the atmosphere here was unpleasant. A family of 5 adults and 3 small children had settled in at two tables right in the middle of the restaurant. Nobody was eating. The adults were all nose-down in their phones. The 2 older kids were running amok- throwing toys, jumping on and off booth seats, playing their cartoons on iPad at full volume. The littlest girl, about 5 but in a diaper, was lifting her shirt over her head exposing herself. So much noise and chaos- and parents pretty much clueless. Later, just as we got up to leave (of course) the family went outside and stood talking, blocking the exit door - and now with a giant stroller and a newborn in it. We had to leave via the patio. An otherwise nice lunch spoiled by trashy, clueless people letting their kids run wild. Located in the UTC mall in LaJolla, this is a very nice Corner Bakery Cafe. I came here in the morning hour to get my favorite chocolate bundle cake and was not disappointed. I love the food here, but was bummed that my favorite Raisin crisp bread was not available. The service here needs some adjusting, but I do praise the cooks in the back for their fast turnaround. 3.5 My father wanted to walk around the mall but he got a little cold so we stopped by to get some soup and drinks. For our beverages we tried their featured drinks.. Dragon fruit lemonade and dragon fruit ice tea. I liked the tea version better because it wasn't overly sweet like the lemonade. We ordered the Chicken Orzo Soup with bread. I've been coming to corner bakery cafe for years now, and now even more with all the additions to the UTC mall. My go to is the pick two, any half sandwich, soup, or pasta. I usually go for the half pressed panini and a pasta. This is definitely enough for a lunch, and it comes with a bag of chips. Parking is in the mall, which means first two hours is free. It's a nice easy and convenient lunch spot and I will be coming back for their friendly service and convenient location. read more

Came in today for the first time and ordered a cup of soup. They call your name after you order and you go to the front and pick up your order. Well turns out there were two people with my name so someone had swooped my soup by the time I got up there to grab it. When I asked for it the guy was confused and told me the people I was with had grabbed it for me. I informed him I was not sitting with anyone who would have grabbed it as it was just my sister and I sitting at the table when they called my name. (note-maybe start checking peoples receipts when they grab the food!) Then he starts to ignore me and decides to keep making other people's drinks. I stand there for a few minutes thinking he is going to grab me a soup real quick but it doesnt look too good. Then I asked him if I should go sit back down and wait for it. He seemed so baffled at the fact I was still asking for the soup I ordered and didn't get lmao. Luckily the cashier overheard the whole incident and grabbed me a soup because clearly this guy was not going to do anything to fix the situation. I like visiting bakeries when they open in the morning and breathe deep the aroma of fresh baked goodies. I arrived at Corner Bakery a bit before opening time. Peering through the window I didn't see anybody until a few minutes after 7am. I had a bad feeling as I entered. I did not smell anything baking. The air here was cold and dead like a tomb. I surveyed the bakery case and picked a bundt cake. I took a bite and found it hard. Not much flavor. Definitely stale. Examining the cross section I saw that the outer half inch was transforming into a yellow glob while the inside was still fluffy. I estimate the bundt cake had been sitting in the case for at least 2 days. I've had treats sit at home for a day and while the fresh flavor is gone you don't have this huge transformation in texture. Back when Corner Bakery was new right before closing time they would give away all the stuff in the bakery case and they would bake fresh the next day. It appears that is no longer the case. 2nd visit I tried a sugar cookie. Cookies was hard. Flavor had some sweetness and had some of the typical flavor you get from a sugar cookie. I could tell this cookie wasn't fresh but it had not turned stale yet. It appears Corner Bakery keeps their baked goods in the case till they sell. Corner Bakery Cafe had advertised a coupon in the past that offered two entrees for $9.99. It essentially was a buy one, get one free type of deal after looking at the menu prices. This location at the Westfield UTC Mall was the closest one so I stopped by to pick up some food for dinner. They had a couple of dedicated spaces in the mall parking lot for to-go orders, but I didn't need to use either one. The setup inside was eerily similar to Boudin SF or Panera Bread. Their Power Greens & Grain Salad was a featured item so I selected that along with an order of Cavatappi Marinara. The salad was loaded with the following ingredients... sliced chicken, toasted chickpeas, whole grain farro, cucumbers, tomatoes, and a sliced hard boiled egg. The greens were a blend of kale, arugula, and spinach topped with a honey balsamic vinaigrette. Outside of the great value from the coupon, nothing much stood out from my experience. It's usually good, I usually have no problem. That being said, please keep in mind to keep hair away from the food. I found 3 little hairs in my pasta sauce when I was only a couple bites in, which was disappointing for a limited time dish. Ordered the chicken sausage breakfast burrito and it was wet and soggy because of the juice from the sausage. Recommend they get all the juice and grease out ( Pat it down) before wrapping it. It was also bland but came with salsa on side so that helped a bit. They had 4 choices of coffee and of course the one I wanted was out of coffee . The place was not busy so staff shouldn't have a problem periodically checking the urns and refilling. Husband had the croissant breakfast sandwich and enjoyed it and his coffee urns was full . This was, hands down, the worst breakfast we've ever had. The food was cold, and somehow , the coffee cup was warmer than the coffee. The scrambled eggs were oddly custard-like, the potatoes soggy, and the bacon tasted like they'd been air dried in sauna. While the prices seem reasonable, the quality is questionable. I liked how you could pick two options from paninis, hot sandwiches or pastas for $11.89 if you don't select the premium options. Fairly affordable given the fun combinations you can make. Customizability aside, the food was subpar in every way. Pretty much all I could taste considering they barely included any chicken or tomatoes. How is the photo from the website even accurate? Steak & Arugula (2/5): not worth the extra cost. Overall dry sandwich and could use some extra horseradish mustard. Seems to have a common theme of clumping condiments in one corner of the sandwich. Chicken Carbonara (3/5): very bland. Portion size was generous but salt and pepper are needed. Chicken can be found thankfully--and was quite tender. Caramel Pecan Chocolate Baby Bundt (1.5/5): I think I received the wrong bundt but it was still disappointing regardless. Reminiscent of Jack in the Box's lava cakes but less soft and moist. Kudos for my order being quickly finished though. If you're in a rush, this place does take-out pretty well despite their mistakes. However, I would lower expectations drastically. read more
