The edge has historic associations with, somewhat incongruously, mining and wizardry, but these days it's a great place to go for a walk with either the kids, the dog, visitors or even a solitary stroll. There are car parks at both the foot of the edge and the top (the latter is the main one) giving the option of a quick trip to the edge itself and back or a longer, more demanding up-and-down walk.

Review 500! Wowzers…read more I'm chuffed that it's this local landmark, as we walked up to Peel Monument on what was probably the loveliest, sunniest first day of Spring that I can remember. Occupying a prominent position on Holcome Hill, you can see the monument from miles around and it serves as a beacon for walkers or those of us that just enjoying getting up to it "because it's there". It's a memorial to Sir Robert Peel, born in Bury, who twice served as Prime Minister and is regarded as the father of the modern British police. On a clear day, which we were lucky coincided with our visit, you can look out across the Greater Manchester landscape to the towns, villages and moorlands beyond. Sit down on the grass and take it all in. There are public footpaths leading up to it from Ramsbottom; we didn't need a map as you could see it above you most of the time. Alternatively, there are lanes you can park on further up the hill as it's a bit of a climb, but definitely worth visiting.

As everyone can imagine, it's named after the famous British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. It's quite a new building, completed only a few years ago, in 2007. Many facilities are provided: spacious and well-lit lecture theatres, a cafe on the ground floor, a small library, computer rooms and even showers. The bridge across the atrium is the common room for mathematics academics and graduate students, where morning coffee is served.

However it's not hard to pop out into the main foyer, which with a glass roof certainly does not lack for natural light. There are plenty of top quality teaching rooms with particularly nice blackboards. My favorite thing about the ATB is the atrium bridge area. It a place where staff and postgrads can relax, chat and get away from maths (although you may struggle to avoid mathematical conversation). It location makes in easy to see from the upper level so you can quickly check who's about from your office (and then decided if you want to sit with them)

A particular example of beauty gets regularly overlooked, due to its secretive location. The Bourse does not have the brazenness of the Town Hall or the City Library, it does not audaciously stand on a major street, waiting for its inevitable plaudits. Instead, this building is well ensconced, shyly peeking out onto Boar Lane. When I ask people if they are familiar with its captivating ergonomics, a blank stare is often my answer. With the appearance of a colossal wall of magic mirrors, it is highlighted beautifully with fairy lights, held aloft by manicured box trees. Have a sneaky glimpse when you are next passing, to marvel at its form.

First you're greeted with beautiful English countryside which is covered in Sheep and little lambs which are great for a quick picture before moving on to see the huge house which you will soon be exploring. This place is part of the national trust, so you can expect it to be well taken care of and and a lot of people about who are more than willing to share their knowledge. We first checked out the old building which is now in ruins, but it still reveals some of the small features which are still preserved such as fireplaces and balcony which gives you a great ire of the entire house and the countryside. After this is the gardens which are fantastic to walk around on a warm day which displays all the beautiful flowers. The house itself has a nice short tour where the guide tells all about the history of the owner, her very interesting history with her granddaughter and more on Mary Queen of Scots who stayed/Imprisoned here. The houses features all appear to be in their original positions and looks, bar a few repairs throughout the years for preservation. Plenty of information to read and people sitting about to answer any questions you need. If you're interested interested in your ElizabethIan style houses, or just want a peak into English history, I would highly recommend!

Huge Elizabethan house and…read morebeautifully landscaped gardens (including a walled garden, orchards and herb garden), featuring statues etc. The surrounding country park is beautiful - and contains cattle, sheep etc. There's also the remains of Hardwick Old Hall in the grounds (although I think that's owned by English Heritage so you would have to pay separately to look around). A gift shop and tea room are also on site - or take a picnic! National Trust members get in free (you can join when you get there and they refund any admission charges) or it's £9 for adults to enter the house and gardens.

It's right on top of a hill, on the border of Cheshire and Staffordshire. On a clear day if you look north east from the castle you can see Jodrell Bank (very picturesque!). The views are breathtaking though. The castle itself is now in ruins, but it's still very impressive. I'd recommend taking a flask of hot chocolate up here on a crisp autumn day. If you look hard enough you'll see 'LK 4 SS' written on a rock somewhere in chalk too (that's me and Steve, that is). Well worth a trip. Head to The Ash for a pint afterwards, you'll deserve it after that walk.

The killer-mile up to the castle itself is well known for being difficult in the car, let alone the killer mile run held annual. Not a visit for the faint hearted in wintertime when the roads are a little slippy! The castle itself may have seen better days, but it still holds its shape and is worth the trip just for the view over cheshire and staffordshire that it gives you at the topa spectactular vista all around.

City records first show The Cross (or High Cross as it was known) in 1377 and has been the site of…read morepublic proclaimations since medieval times. In the 17th century the town crier was permitted to keep a stall at the cross and to take the profits. During the Civil War it served as a rallying point for Royalist citizens but with their surrender in 1646 to Parliamentary troops after a long siege despite earlier re assurances the cross was destroyed with ornate upper section being lost without trace. The base of the Cross being discovered at Plas Newydd in LLangollen, North Wales circa 1817 where it remains. What was left was hidden under nearby St. Peter's Church until its discovery in 1820 after which it spent some 60 years in a Handbridge garden before being acquired by the 1st Duke of Westminster for the newly open Grosvenor museum. The city council re-erected the Cross in the Roman Gardens in 1949 before it was finally restored to its original site at the intersection of Chester's four main streets namely: Northgate, Bridge, Eastgate and Watergate in 1975. Perhaps it was a typical council job as it had only taken 329 years to complete!!!!!!!!!!!!
