Erected after his death in 1865, Richard Cobden is another Manchester politician made famous for his work in the anti-Corn Law League in the 1800s, along with John Bright (who has a statue himself in Albert Square). Basically the Corn Law raised the price of bread and politicians like Cobden worked against this unfair law.
The Stockport MP was hailed as a local hero when the Corn Law was abolished in 1846.
