Garden Lakes Elementary School

Garden Lakes Elementary School

I have two kids in this school. My oldest, who is just about to enter 6th grade, has been going to…read morethis school since Kindergarten. I think some things have definitely improved over the years, such as pick-up and drop-off (which used to be a total nightmare), and it seems that they've slowly started making improvements to the bathrooms and some exterior parts of the school, like the sidewalks. However, I feel this school could benefit from investing more money into fixing up the playgrounds, classrooms, and overall infrastructure of the school. The playgrounds are pretty old and run-down. The classrooms are very dated. Some of the classrooms have plumbing issues and a huge problem with ants. The teachers and staff members are wonderful, but at times I am not sure if what my kids are learning is up to par with other schools. The before/after program (PRIDE) is not great... my kids were enrolled in it this past school year and they originally stated they would watch the kids on all of the breaks (fall, spring, etc.) except winter break, but then right before fall break they completely bailed on the parents. Some of the teachers in the before/after programs are too lenient and the snacks they pass out are not healthy. One day my kids had several small boxes of TRIX cereal. This should not be an acceptable snack to feed children, especially in the afternoons when they will likely be eating dinner within a couple of hours. My biggest problem with the school is the grading system. Instead of the usual A, B, C, D, F, this school uses a 1-4 grade scale, which does not tell me much... and this has been one of my biggest issues with this school (and the district itself, since it's throughout the entire school district) since my oldest started going here. Another big problem I have is that they do not release a school supply list until about a week before school starts, during Meet The Teacher Night, but last year we didn't get it until the NIGHT before school. I think this is very inconvenient because by the time we get the school supply list, a lot of the stuff is already out of stock at the stores. Last year I had a hard time finding the right type of folders for my daughters, which was frustrating. So those are definitely some things the school could afford to improve upon... also, a no tolerance policy for bullying and delinquent behavior. It seems like the kids are not punished as severely as they should be when causing harm to other students. My oldest daughter told me that a boy in her grade started a fight with another boy on a field trip a few months ago, and even called the other boy the "N" word, and he was still able to attend the school. He even called one of the teachers the "B" word. This type of behavior should not be acceptable. Areas where the school is meeting/exceeding my expectations would be the teachers and staff. I have been mostly happy with my kids' teachers, the ladies in the office, and Mrs. Helland. I like that they still have parties in celebration of certain holidays, because I remember having class parties as a child and found it super memorable. The 5th graders had a ballroom dance competition this past school year, which was super fun. I would like to see more events like this. Pick-up/drop-off is also a breeze now, for the most part. It is so much faster than it used to be. I really appreciate that the staff takes the time to ensure a smooth process. Overall, I would say this is an okay school, and one of the better public schools in the area from what I've seen.

Really good school, teachers are engages, administration very helpful, close knit community.read more

The curriculum that heritage teaches is AMAZING!…read more Most teachers are new with about 1-2 years teaching experience. Lots of mis-communication between staff (teachers, administrative and bus drivers) My daughter loves this school. It is a charter school. Uniforms are a must and Fridays are Dollar for Duds ($1 to dress casual) the money goes to the school or charities. It needs a lot of work but I know they will improve fast since it is a newer school.

The schools we have dealt with in Arizona have been hard to adjust to because of questionable practices relating to the staff, the curriculum, and grading. We found where we belong at Heritage Elementary. From the curriculum offered to the respect given to students and their families. Students are allowed to be themselves in a welcoming and secure learning environment. The environment at this school allows students to grow and encourages them to strive to be even better. My children regained their confidence thanks to the staff at this school. They felt welcomed from the moment they stepped in the front office: With each staff member we encountered, the welcoming feeling grew even stronger. Ashley, Sharon, Mr. Dye, Mr. Mitchell, and Mrs. Kinsey just to name a few. Thank you for creating such a welcoming learning environment. Forever grateful for giving us the chance to once again experience how a school should operate. Parents, check out the curriculum and all the activities offered at this school. Thank you Heritage Elementary!

The lady just signed her out. And when I tried to report it to the principal and the district office, they acted as if nothing wrong had occurred. That is super weird because I called six other locations of legacy and just presented them the situation and every single one of those ladies said they because they like their job they don't wanna get fired. They wouldn't want to be terminated. All of them said that. That is crazy because the superintendent and the principal both acted as if they didn't understand what I was complaining about but all of these first response was what I just Also, they just kept trying to justify the act and I doubt they did anything about it and I still see that I don't understand why she should've been fired. I'm not going to act as if I've never had any incidents in the front office but it's all tied back to that same lady and she's always the one causing problems for me and Mr. Reid knows that and he knew that when I called to complain about my child being signed out, he knew everything about the background of everything I've had to deal with that's cool, especially since he's part of me having to deal with it being he's the principal. This store doesn't operate in the interest of ores the truth no that they like to operate in the interest of keeping control that's them being in control. I hope somebody from the state board sees this another thing when I would tell those they would all be very concern. It would be really happen did it? I will always tell him. I just wanted to know the answer to this question so I can understand the appropriate way in which it would to be executed. I can't get over how strange it seems that six different employees. We all have the same response except for their superiors. I called the state one time about this and the lady on the phone was concerned as well definitely said I had a great argument against the school and she gave me the number that I actually needed to call because I guess public schools charter schools have a different department. It's not all one department so I need to call that one which I will hear soon Trust me! The amount of disrespect and the level of disrespect that these people seem to get away with or have immunity to being with is mind-boggling
