Located at the base of Mount Maunganui in Tauranga, New Zealand, Copenhagen Cones is ranked in the top ten of ice cream shops in all of New Zealand, dispensing more than a 100,000 scoops of ice cream in a year. They produce their waffle cones fresh in store, with dedicated waffle irons. From reading on-line, the smell of the cones cooking are what draws people in, especially if coming down from the summit of the mount.
it seems to be an independent store founded in 1984, not related to the Royal Copenhagen Ice Cream shoppes that are prevalent in Australia. Wasn't sure what brand of ice cream they use, so thinking it is made in-house from their own dairy farms. The ice cream was quite good, thick and creamy. We got lucky in that there wasn't a long line, and the young man who served us was quite friendly and helpful with his suggestions.
I love ice cream shakes in general, so had to try their version in strawberry. On the menu, there was a 'milkshake' (NZ$6) and a 'thickshake' for two dollars more. Was told that the thickshake just had 'more', so chose the smaller size. After drinking the first sip, I wondered if he meant more ice cream vs milk, because it was very watery, almost like drinking cold strawberry milk...so would try the thickshake next time to be closer to what I like back in the States. The strawberry flavor was added with sugar syrup, so that wasn't good.
My brother loved his two scoop waffle cone (NZ$8), saying the flavors were great and the fresh waffle cone was a great addition. So it seemed like going with what made them famous, is the way to go here. read more
