Copenhagen Cones - 2 scoop waffle cone

Located at the base of Mount Maunganui in Tauranga, New Zealand, Copenhagen Cones is ranked in the…read moretop ten of ice cream shops in all of New Zealand, dispensing more than a 100,000 scoops of ice cream in a year. They produce their waffle cones fresh in store, with dedicated waffle irons. From reading on-line, the smell of the cones cooking are what draws people in, especially if coming down from the summit of the mount. it seems to be an independent store founded in 1984, not related to the Royal Copenhagen Ice Cream shoppes that are prevalent in Australia. Wasn't sure what brand of ice cream they use, so thinking it is made in-house from their own dairy farms. The ice cream was quite good, thick and creamy. We got lucky in that there wasn't a long line, and the young man who served us was quite friendly and helpful with his suggestions. I love ice cream shakes in general, so had to try their version in strawberry. On the menu, there was a 'milkshake' (NZ$6) and a 'thickshake' for two dollars more. Was told that the thickshake just had 'more', so chose the smaller size. After drinking the first sip, I wondered if he meant more ice cream vs milk, because it was very watery, almost like drinking cold strawberry milk...so would try the thickshake next time to be closer to what I like back in the States. The strawberry flavor was added with sugar syrup, so that wasn't good. My brother loved his two scoop waffle cone (NZ$8), saying the flavors were great and the fresh waffle cone was a great addition. So it seemed like going with what made them famous, is the way to go here.

Just a few steps away from "the mount" and the beach. Perfect way to cool down on a hot sunny day…read more We got a large waffle cone which comes with one full scoop and two half scoops so you can choose three flavors. We went with mocha fudge, coconut marshmallow, and lemon cheesecake. My personal favourite was lemon cheesecake! It was refreshing with a nice citrusy flavor! The large waffle cone also comes with whipped cream and your choice of syrup: caramel, chocolate, strawberry, or passion fruit. There was a long lineup when we passed by there on a weekend. Best to go on a weekday to avoid lineups.

We'd read somewhere that there was a night market on Friday's. This turned out to be Gourmet Night…read moreMarket. We dropped in around 7:00pm and it was busy. Lots of families and kids running around. It goes from 5:00pm to late (seemed to be closing up shop around 9:00pm when we left). We tried a couple vendors: 1) Paella Pan - Seafood paella ($16.00 NZD large) - my dad ate this all to himself. You get a good portion but my dad said it was pretty average. 2) Barbacoa - Tuna (#1) ($10.00 NZD) - sesame encrusted yellow tuna with Asian herbed slaw and noc chum. Tuna was lightly seared but could have used more flavour. The mango tomato salsa was summery but the bean sprouts were boring. 3) The Homegrown Kitchen - Mussel sausages with home smoked fish risotto ($12.50 NZD) - came with coriander and tomato salsa. Super delicious! The smoked fish mixed in with the risotto was bomb. Same with the mussel stuffed sausage. Pretty unique combo. - Salt + pepper calamari ($8.50 NZD) - with slaw and habanero mayo. Calamari was perfectly seasoned and oh so tender. 4) Cakes & Desserts - Lemon shortcake ($6.50 NZD) - came with cream or yoghurt on top. B got yoghurt. The shortcake could have been more lemony/tangy. 5) Friets - Ice cream sundaes ($5.50 NZD) - four flavours to choose from (salted caramel, choc brownie, spiced cookie dough and mochachino). We went with the salted caramel; salty, sweet and the chopped nuts was icing on the cake. I have no idea how this started to melt when it was freezing outside. The live music was great! Awesome voices and played some great throwbacks. Worth a visit if you're in town on a Friday evening.

Plenty of space to sit on the grass while you enjoy your food. Can highly recommend the pork sliders, yummmm, mussels, lamb cutlets were banging, the stall that sells salted ice cream sundaes and Dutch fries were also banging. Mmm... Definitely must stop if you're around the area.
