Duck Island Ice Cream has been in Hamilton East for a while now. I've only heard amazing things about it for ages, but for whatever reason, I have only just recently managed to take myself there. The shop is related to a local restaurant (Chim Choo Ree) though located across the river and down Grey Street from the restaurant's location.
I came here with my husband on a chilly, windy Saturday night, around 7:00 pm. It really wasn't ice cream weather by any stretch of the imagination (unless you are the type of person, as I am, that is not bothered by having ice cream in colder temps).
There is street parking around, on Grey Street and some of the adjacent side streets. It took a little bit to find a space at this time of day. I arrived with very high expectations and Duck Island did not disappoint me. As someone with a bit a of a sweet tooth, I've had plenty of ice cream in my four decades of life. But nothing like this.
The atmosphere of the shop is cozy and casual. It's on the smallish side, given the amount of patrons. It was full when we arrived, but we only had two people to order in front of us. By the time we'd made our purchase, we were able to a small little window table to enjoy our treats.
There is an extensive flavor assortment - all the flavors were written up on the menu board (but you do actually need to look in the case for what is available on the day). I was actually a bit overwhelmed by the choices, because so many of them sounded incredible. I eventually settled on a single scoop cone, with two "half-scoops" of ice cream - one each of salted caramel with cacao and one of coconut feijoa. The very smart folks here let you do two half-scoops because it really is so hard to decide.
I sat at my seat and with the first lick of salted caramel/cacao, I was in heaven. The texture of the ice cream was out of this world, so rich and creamy and smooth and melty and... I could go on with more adjectives but I think you really just need to experience it. When I got down to my coconut feijoa scoop, the texture was a bit more standard, but the flavor was light, not overly sweet and incredibly refreshing. I wanted to just keep that taste on my tongue for the rest of the night. So yummy!
If you're looking for a little treat, or dessert while you're out in Hamilton, this is definitely the place to come to. It's also located right across the street from a newly refurbished playground, so grab your kids, grab some ice cream and have a run around at the park. read more
