Why hello... let me come in and see your noms

Oh Cafe 88 what i wouldn't do to have a replica of you nestled right here in my backyard. Unfortunately something as perfect and gluten freely decadent as you probably doesn't exist in the US. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and had spent a night in Tauranga. We were about to check out the beach and Mt. Maunganui when we drove by this Cafe and decided to stop for breakfast first. We hadn't checked online to see if they had anything gf but considering the gluten free scene in NZ we were hopeful I wouldn't have trouble finding something. The associated memory I have with Cafe 88 is walking in and seeing piles of delicious, beautiful, and many gf pastries...was I in a dream or could this be real. There was also a bounty of mouthwatering looking sandwiches, wraps, salads oh my...The inner child started tugging on my husbands sleeve- I want that one, and and that, maybe 2 of those, can you help me eat a brownie? I was reeled back in and permitted a breakfast brownie and a gf toast with noms on top. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed an incredible first day of Kiwi spring. The gf brownie came out first with a beautiful compote and incredible presentation. It was so good and my husband who claims to not like brownies or the such was responsible for eating at least half of it. He also had an omelette which was presented with lovely bits of microgreens on top. My toast came out looking like a work of art and was piled with avocado, glazed mushrooms, ricotta, bacon, tomato and a lovely balsamic reduction. We truly savored this meal and remember it as one of our favorites from our honeymoon. The service was quick and friendly, the food was excellent and portions just right, the price was reasonable and competitive for a NZ cafe. If we make it back to Tauranga I know where we'll be stopping for breakfast!.

I am such a fan. I love this cafe full of gorgeous baked goods and a good sized brunch/lunch menu with options to satisfy both the omnivore and vegan alike. Although the space is quite small, the cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating and has relatively quick service so you can take advantage of the free hour parking around the mount. I ordered the brioche French toast and my goodness it was a work of art. Coated in toasted coconut flakes and accompanied with berry compote, passion fruit mascarpone and orange infused maple syrup it was surprisingly not oversweet and the perfect portion size so it wasn't overwhelming. My friend got the beetroot roasted smoked salmon bagel which was really great as well. It came stacked with pesto, salmon and a Hollandaise that was just alright . It doesn't stack up to American deli bagels but it was a nice composition. Didn't try the coffee but I'm sure it's good as near everyone else ordered one. I will definitely be back to try the baked goods!!

Don't remember but there was ham and eggs and deliciousness. Benedict?

I love this place! Great homey feel and so much food!! I wanted to eat everything! I ordered a the real honey lemon and ginger tea and it was delicious. For my main dish I ordered the benedict and it was soo good. It was just want I wanted for a brunch meal, hearty but not too filling. They had a lot of muffins and sweet desserts at the counter and I really wish I had a chance to sample them as they all looked super tasty and homemade! Be aware of the setup as you go to the counter to order everything and then it's first come, first served for the seating. There's additional seating in the back with heat lamps when needed as well.

Savory muffin with bacon in the sun!

This café characterizes itself by being a more modern and fresh kind of place than most cafés in NZ. This is more Swedish style with some cool NZ stuff. I had an amazing breakfast muffin with bacon, spinach and tomato, and also a blueberry muffin that was great. The muffins are about 5 $ but worth it. You can easily spend a lot of money here so be careful if you want to save. There is a cool little courtyard in the back with nice plants and twinkle lights, you can also sit outside on the side walk or inside wich is cozy. When you eat here the staff serves everything at the table and you get most cakes with yoghurt and berries! Nice. Like brownie, but it's not very spectacular. Definitely worth a visit, and you should go here if you are walking around Mount center.

Once again I decided to follow the Yelp community for this one and a bit disappointed time. Yeah the large choice of fancy pastries and nice little patio outside is a great start but that's pretty much it. Had one baked eggs & bacon tart and a Thai noodle salad. To be honest it tastes like they were not fresh from the morning if you see what I mean. This is why I usually try to stay away from those places with extensive list of options in their menus, simply because this often mean low quality ingredients and nothing's fresh. 3 stars sounds fair to me and this place needs a little bit of work on their food menu to be a 4 or 5.

This seems to be the popular spot in town, and it is for a reason. The cafe itself is not too big, but it does have some outside seating. They have a breakfast and a lunch menu (starting at 11:30am) and a large selection of pre-made sandwiches and cakes. I tried their salmon, avocado and cream cheese bagel and the boysenberry cake, while the bf had the big breakfast. The bagel was OK, but the boysenberry cake was very moist and fruity but not overly sweet. Such an enjoyable cake to have for brunch. The big breakfast was indeed big and the hungry bf was completely satisfied with it. FYI this place does get crowded so early birds will do well.

I like coffee here. Normally very busy! I tried banana-date smoothie and iced coffee in the summer. It was good!

They say New Zealand and Australian coffee is the best, not sure I agree…read more So far I have not had one cup that has proven that. Quality/Quantity - Long Black Americano with milk on the side - Taste no different than in the states where I am from. I even tried it black before adding the milk. Hot Chocolate - This was better than the coffee; my wife loves the marshmallows. They have pastries and a full menu also, see pictures. Atmosphere - Indoor and outdoor seating; almost everyone was outside as it was another beautiful day. Everyone was jousting for the limited shaded seats. We were lucky and got it twice. Not sure if it was due to the beach, but there were excessive flies. Hard to enjoy your food and drinks in that type of environment. There were many birds also, but they can get scared away. Not the flies... Service - This is where they fell short. To start, counter service. Then as it was so busy and everyone wanted to be outside, no one was busing the tables. So many of the tables got used 3 times while we enjoyed our drinks and we watched as the tables got fuller and fuller with used glasses, plates, etc. Hence the fly and bird issue. Price - $13.50NZ, $8US; very reasonably priced for what we got, well minus the lack of service. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1989 with your 400+ world wide locations. I see you use the franchise model.
