Great Tuesday special ! , beer and fries $14 dollars. They will switch out the beer for hard cider. They do switch staff a lot due to increase and decrease in seasonal business. Therefore be patient with the staff. read more

Good space if you have a big group - everything is reasonably priced but don't have too big a expectation as we did. We ordered 4 burger meals and fish and chips and were a bit let down with the portion sizes (pub meals are traditionally quite generous) taste and presentation. It serves a purpose so that's fine - just wish I had endless great things to add. Staff were friendly but the place needs a little TLC I feel. read more

I've never really liked anything I've eaten here, but the drinks selection is pretty fine. The real reason people go here is for low-quality, bore-me-to-death setlists where they can stand around awkwardly until the late hours of the night without really seeming to have any fun. Astrolabe stops letting people in after 12am and closes at 1pm, so if you don't leave early enough, head straight on to Tauranga or Mount Brewery instead. Astrolabe is extremely well-decorated and cute, though. I love the color schemes and style of the place. It has a pretty good atmosphere. I just wish they had better music late night Saturdays, in particular. Why can't any of the bars around here play fun, danceable music? read more

I visited Astrolabe on a vibing Saturday night and although the venue and overall mood was awesome, I unfortunately experienced some of the worst service of my life. After going to the bar and attempting to order some shots for myself and some friends, I was approached by a staff member (who was off the clock) who looked like a man but dressed like a woman (I want to make it clear I have no issue with this, everyone has a right to individuality) who then proceeded to tell me that I was disrespectful to them (even though I'd never met them or even talked to them before this moment). This individual then told me that if I didn't give them $20 for my "disrespect" they would have me removed from the bar. I payed them the money and continued my night but I think this is incredibly wrong and I have no explanation to justify this person's actions towards me. Please do better, this was unacceptable. read more

Gorgeous bar and chill out space. Lots of seating both inside and outside. Some of the outside seating is under cover for those rainy/sunny days. Friendly bar staff who are happy to talk you through the range of beers they have on offer and even provide a sample for you to try. Decent fast wifi is very useful too. The garden is a great space to relax with its kiwi themed decor. read more

We stopped by for lunch on a super hot day and we welcomed being able to sit outside yet in the shade. The place was packed, it's obviously a popular choice in the mount. My husband and I ordered the vegetarian nachos (that guac/cheese/sour cream ratio was amazing), the $12 lunch special (super decent and tasty positions!) and polenta fries (needed Parmesan. Lots of it) and some tap beers too. We had a great time, the food, service, music and general vibes were awesome. It's well worth a visit when you're in the mount! read more

Not a good breakfast at all . Eggs Bene on soggy brown bread . I did ask if I could please have a peace of toast with my breakfast . They did bring over a half cooked peace of brown bread that was still soft in the middle .. not sure what to say about that.. Invest in a toaster would be a good start... I've been coming to this establishment many times over the years. They have done well with the refurbishment - the decor is cool with a retro feel. This last weekend however, what a disappointment. I'm the type of guy that is a glass half full and I do try and find the good in everything but this last visit left a bad taste and it is only because the other 12 people in my group had a similar experience on the day I thought a one star review was in order which had everything to do with the food, coffee and service and the other star is because at least there was a retro market on the premises this particular day. So to summarize.. We seated ourselves. We found the rather confusing menu ourselves. We waited 15 mins to get served from a person who said they are not a morning person. We ordered a round of coffees and got them 15 mins later only a tad warm. We had to go searching for sugar. Then we waited 35 mins for 13 cold breakfasts mostly with one hard egg and one soft and for those who hanker for eggs benedict, the importance of runny eggs is quite high. Had we not needed to be at an important engagement, we would have sent every one of those meals back. We did not get any follow up service to ask if our meals were OK. We had to go find our own water and glasses for the table. We told our waitress about our issues and we got a shrug and an ummmm? Oh that's right she was not a morning person. We told the chap who took our payment about our issues and we got a meek sorry. Perhaps we would have taken it up with the manager had there been an obvious one around. The astrolabe being the biggest and most central place in town there would be a bit more attention to delivering hot,well executed breakfast food with chipper service and superior coffee. This was one of many great meals in New Zealand. This place is so retro and quirky that there's so much to look at and enjoy during your visit. Huge beer selection, I tried to local Mac's gold lager. Fresh fish sandwich with guac could have used a couple more pieces of fish but it still filled me up. Great big outdoor patio would have been fabulous on a warmer day.
