With all kidding aside, to me it didn't seem that long at all, rather not long enough. Big Sky Charter & Fish Camp's owner Joe is a wonderful man who has years of experience and knowledge of the Kenai river and it's layout. His lodge fronts the riverside and you can fish from shore. On a side note, if you fish from shore and you somehow manage to cast your lure into the trees...don't try to climb the trees to get your lure out...as a family member found out it didn't carry his weight well and he fell into the 45-50 degree water. Luckily he didn't get swept with the current, although unluckily he found out he broke a good sized branch of a protected tree - on second thought maybe this would only happen if you're related to me... If you're looking to experience true river fishing, Joe has fishing guides that will take you out for a full or half day. Each guide is certified and are avid fishermen, both knowledgeable and personable. After you catch your fish...(this is the part that I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE)... Joe and his team will clean the fish for you!! *yayy!!* You can take the parts that you want to make sashimi out of or cook for meals, the rest they will vacuum pack, freeze, and package for you to take home. They also provide smoking and canning services for your catches. This is definitely on my "to-do" list for next salmon season!!! If you go, please send them my Aloha!!!

Kaven has been going for 13 years and invited me this year. He has stayed A LOT of different places in Alaska and has chosen Bill's place for the past 5 years...an EXCELLENT choice! The people, amenities, view, EVERYTHING about this place is SUPERB! Even Bill! :-) Bill's wife, Ogie...crazy! I love it! She is the most happiest person I have ever met and makes you feel at home. Warning...she dances around even with NO MUSIC! The Kenai River was approximately 26 steps from the door of my two story cabin. Eagles and fish...everywhere! I cannot say enough great things about this place, I truly do not have the words. If you want an excellent place to hang your hat while in Alaska between Anchorage and Homer...this is the place! Warning #2-Book fast as I already booked for next year! I've been to all 58 states and 4 continents, this was my direct quote to the gang on the morning we were leaving and they will verify, "Y'all, I'm not going back with y'all. It covers almost two million acres of land, glaciers, ice fields, tundra, forests, and coastal wetlands. I was staying in Soldotna and visited the Visitor Center that is located there. There are interactive exhibits and park rangers on hand to tell you about the activities that you can enjoy while here. I had an awesome opportunity to fly over both the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Kenai Fjords National Park in a small plane during my week in Alaska. I saw the Tustumena Glacier, the Skilak Glacier and the Harding Ice Field from high above. It was amazing to see the size of these glaciers from an airplane. We also traveled along the Kenai River. I did a lot of salmon fishing during my time here and enjoyed seeing the length of that famous river from the sky. The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is Alaska's most visited refuge. They have a lot of wildlife that include moose, bears, wolves and swans. The Kenai River originates in the refuge and is renowned for its wide variety of sport fishing. The visitor center is your best spot to learn about where to go and to pick up maps and other resources. They also have events from time to time and offer guided walks. The visitor center is open year-round and has a book store and gift shop inside of it. The Dena'ina people call the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge "Yaghanen". It means the good land.

The ranger had lots of information on local wildlife to see in the fall along with tips for checking out the trails at the Refuge. When you visit you should definitely take the time to check out the center and ask the ranger what's good to see in season before you hit the trail. I did the short hike to the lakeshore and the Centennial trail there that loops through the woods. Since I visited in the fall, there were lots of colorful leaves and mosses to view, but no pesky bugs, which was cool. You'll find the trails here easy to navigate, they're well signed. The lake was really pretty with some nice mountain views. I didn't see any wildlife, but did see evidence of some. The ranger said there are bear and moose around, so just be aware that you may come across them in your exploration. (She said likely moose, but not bear...although it's not impossible...) Our family booked an all day private salmon fishing charter hoping that our timing would coincide…read morewith the second sockeye run. We have a 13 yo daughter and a 10yo daughter who are pretty adventurous and love to fish, but this was going to be so different than the lake fishing they are accustomed to. No one in the family had ever been fly fishing, so this was going to be an adventure for not only my husband and myself, but for our guide who would have the *joy* of teaching and managing all 4 of us. I did a lot of research to make sure that we selected a company who would be a good fit, and I am so very glad we chose to go with Jason's Guide Service. Our guide was Henry and although he was very young and relatively new, he was amazing. He had so much knowledge of the area and was so skilled that you would've thought he had been around and doing this for much much longer. Jason had called the night before letting us know that the salmon were running a little late and that fishing for them was pretty dismal. He offered to let us focus on plug and drift fishing for trout and Dolly Vardon but was open to mixing in some fly fishing. He prepared us for what could be a fairly unproductive day and how fly fishing could be frustrating for the kids, particularly our youngest. We told him we wanted to at least try some fly fishing just for the experience but would be just as happy drifting and using spinner reels if that didn't work out. Henry was so incredibly patient with all of us the entire day. He was an excellent teacher and my kids were thrilled to throw on the waders and get in the water. Both of them caught on fairly quickly and my daughter even caught a couple of trout within a short period of time on the fly rod. We alternated between fly fishing and plugging and we all were able to catch some beautiful rainbow trout, a few Dollys and a few salmon. Most of the salmon were too large and not keepers, but super fun to catch and get pictures of. We did end up being home dinner which was more than we expected due to our timing. We saw many, many eagles and were super lucky to hang out in fairly close proximity to a young brown bear - the first and only we ended up seeing on our 14 day trip. Most importantly, we had a great time and it was an experience my kids enjoyed enough to want to build on it in the future! Mission accomplished. These guys know this river well and will work their tails off to get you to the right spots. Just as importantly to us, they are super kind, patient and gracious with beginners, including kids. We highly recommend them and would absolutely book with them if we are lucky enough to return!

His communication before our trip was excellent. During our time together, he was patient and a wonderful teacher. He knew how important it was for my teenage boys to catch fish that day, so he met us before sunrise to make absolutely sure we had the best spot on the river. My wife, who is not really into fishing, enjoyed just sitting in the boat and hearing Mike's stories about life in Alaska. He filleted all our fish on the spot and had everything ready for us to take to the fish processing center for shipping. He's a true professional and a great human.
