There is a West Virginia historical marker near the fountain that says the fountain was built by the West Virginia Highway Commission and local artisans in 1932. The fountain is constructed of local rocks and quartz from a nearby quarry. There was no running water during my visit but apparently water is gravity fed from the hill above. According to the plaque, the fountain was a local attraction for social gatherings back in the day. Auctions and dances were were even held at the fountain. It was fun to imagine the people that would have visited. Today, the Pinoak Extension Homemakers Club maintains the fountain. There is a parking area around the fountain, surrounded by beautiful trees (maybe pin oaks). There are no additional amenities near the fountain. There is no cell phone service in the area, but navigation tools did function. The fountain is accessible with no steps. Fun, interesting and a beautiful drive.

The 400 acre property was purchased by Evans (a Welsh Baptist) from William Penn who had originally purchased the land from Lenni Lenapes in 1683. The marker reads, "Fort Evans, built here, 1755, was attacked by Indians, 1756. The men were absent but Polly Evans, whose husband, John, had built the fort, led the women in its defense. The Big Spring here was noted camping ground of both armies, 1861-1865." There is little information online about the attack though an extensive history of the property, its defense from a proposed mill and damage from arson are on https://friendsofpawccp-org.doodlekit.com/home/john-evans-house. This is a 1096 feoot long, three-spam steel hunch plate girder design with two lanes of traffic and an eight-foot wide sidewalk. It carries route 34 between Maryland and West Virginia. Back as early as 1775, there was ferry service here between Shepherdstown WV and Sharpsburg MD. A number of bridges have come and been replaced. If you look carefully, you might see some of those stone pilings. The bridge is named in honor of the inventor of the steamship who made a successful public demonstration here on the Potomac on December 3 and 11, 1787. As bridges go, it does a fine job of carrying traffic over the river. It is lacking in aesthetic appeal. [Review 15614 overall - 66 in West Virginia - 1118 of 2021.]

It is called the Link between East and West. It was built in 1819 and was first stone bridge in Washington County. Erected by Silas Harry making a major improvement to the road system between Baltimore and Cumberland. It helped have a smooth surface from eastern seaboard to western wilderness. It carried traffic until seriously damaged by store flooding in 1972. Now you can just walk on it. It was placed on the National Historic Register 1982. I am giving it 5 stars because it had information there and it was a nice bridge to walk on to take in the view.
