The fort is about 6 miles from here, so this is less a historical marker and more of a billboard advertisement. The fort does look way cool https://www.yelp.com/biz/fort-frederick-state-park-big-pool and it's bookmarked for a future visit to this spot on the Potomac River. The marker reads, "Fort Frederick. Maryland State Park. Colonial stone fort built 1756 for Province of Maryland by Governor Horatio Sharpe to protect frontier against French and Indians after Braddock's defeat. The driving tour took us around half an hour, plus more time for stops at the many scenic views, historical monuments, and informative plaques. And we encountered a number of people walking the tour. I'm not a dedicated student of history, but i wrote this just to say this well-mapped tour is worth the time to get a real sense of the landscape and the extent of the battlefields.

This roadside marker on US-11 (Winchester Avenue) stands in front of the John Evans property and…read morecommemorates an event from the Colonial era when this part of West Virginia was still known as Virginia. The 400 acre property was purchased by Evans (a Welsh Baptist) from William Penn who had originally purchased the land from Lenni Lenapes in 1683. The marker reads, "Fort Evans, built here, 1755, was attacked by Indians, 1756. The men were absent but Polly Evans, whose husband, John, had built the fort, led the women in its defense. The Big Spring here was noted camping ground of both armies, 1861-1865." There is little information online about the attack though an extensive history of the property, its defense from a proposed mill and damage from arson are on https://friendsofpawccp-org.doodlekit.com/home/john-evans-house. Just be careful, due to numerous cyclist and walkers. We strolled past Canal Lock 52 to the Tonoloway Creek Aqueduct. It was amazing to see the thick rock facing of the cliff area and you can see the rocks in the river bottom. Free to enjoy this lovely historical location. Plenty of walking and signage to read and learn about the past. The aqueduct truly is a piece of Artwork!!! If in the area check it out!!!

Along US-219 near the center of Peterstown, this marker points out a historic find. There is some…read moreroom to pull over if the traffic is light. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Home of the Jones Diamond. An alluvial diamond weighing 34.48 carats, largest to date found in North America, was discovered here in April 1928 by William P. "Punch" Jones and his father, Grover C. Jones Sr., while pitching horseshoes in the home yard of Mr. and Mrs. Grover C. Jones. "Punch" was later killed in combat during World War Two. Mr. and Mrs. Grover C. Jones still retain ownership of the diamond." The marker was erected in 1970. When the stone was found, it was initially mistaken for quartz and the family kept it in a cigar box for 14 years until a geologist at Virginia Tech confirmed its authenticity in 1942, leading to its display at the Smithsonian Institution. The 34.48-carat diamond was sold at Sotheby's in 1984 for over $74,000 to a buyer in Asia and remains the largest alluvial diamond ever found in North America. An alluvial diamond is a natural diamond that has been eroded from its original volcanic source and transported by water over time to settle in places like riverbeds. From there, it would stretch westward to the wild west frontier of Ohio. Four miles west of Conococheague Creek, the new road bisected land owned by Martin Myers. Farmer Myers decided to become a land developer, and in 1821 he laid off lots on each side of the new road. On one of his lots, next to a clear spring, Myers built a small log building where he made a sold crocks and jugs. The new road brought thousands of pioneers through "Myersville." Next to Myers' store, a small log hotel sprang up, which came to be identified by travelers as "the-hotel-at- the-clear spring." Here on Cumberland Street is a marker that points the way down an alley to the original spring. It is not well lit and is not handicapped accessible.
