There really aren't enough words to describe what Alex Bohrer has done for our son in terms of a major positive life impact. Not only as a piano teacher but as a quality human being as well. Joey started studying with Alex five years ago with zero knowledge of jazz piano and music theory. In that short time Joey has discovered his path in life as a musician winning title after title for district and regionals as best HIgh School jazz pianist and finishing as number one High School jazz pianist in the state of Texas. As a result he was bombarded with college scholarship offers from across the country and to our joy he chose to stay close to home accepting a scholarship from UT. Because of his deeply entrenched knowledge of music theory and piano technique provided by Alex Joey entered UT last fall out-placing seven other senior pianists as the UT Jazz band pianist. He was also personally taken under the wing of the Dean of the music dept. because he stood out so. Taking nothing away from Joey's God given talent it was Alex's thorough coverage of the secrets of music theory, performance skills and strong practice direction that got Joey where he is today. Alex's own love for music rubbed off on him in a big way. Prior to Alex Joey had a little classical training but wasn't even sure if he was all that interested in continuing with piano. Alex lit a fire under our son which has only grown through the years and for that we will forever be indebted to him. Just for the record Alex was referred to us by another Westlake Hills family who's son Nathan had also studied several years with Alex. He had also achieved the same status as No1 High School Jazz pianist in Texas a few years before Joey. He also got into William Patterson University on scholarship as a piano major. There is no coincidence in the fact that all of Alex's students seem to excel at piano (Not just jazz) while developing a profound love for music and composition. Joey has several bands and is highly in demand as a young player here in Austin Tx. Our son has a bright future doing what he truly loves. How many of us can truly say the same? Alex Bohrer has been a Godsend. Both of my daughters had gone through two previous piano teachers before we found him. Both teachers were nice but the girls were still wanting to quit piano due to the boredom and tedium that comes with working and playing out of method books. As a child I quit for the same reason and have regretted it ever since. My husband and I were reluctant to let them quit but ready to throw in the towel as getting the girls to practice was an uphill battle. We knew they loved tinkering at the piano but simply hated going to lessons. Alex had been referred to me by a number of friends in the area due to his ability to inspire kids, nurture a love for music and tap into the child's reservoir of undiscovered musicality. At best we expected to get on his waiting list but he managed to squeeze in two back to back 45 minute lessons as another family had just decided to take the summer off. We knew we had a winner right from the very first lesson. All the way home the girls couldn't stop talking about the songs they had just composed (No previous composing experience) and couldn't wait to get home to fight over the piano. It has been 8 months and still that enthusiasm for the piano has not subsided. Also previously it had been like pulling teeth getting the girls to actually read the music as they just memorized everything. Alex had them reading both treble and bass clef in the first week with no effort whatsoever. He is not your typical conservative or stiff looking piano teacher. He is Cherokee/Austrian mixed and his Piano studio has a peaceful Native American theme. It is very relaxing for waiting parents with everything from tempurpedic benches to foot massage machines to a beautiful rear deck for us to hang out on with restless siblings. Joe (My husband) likes having wifi so can continue to work when he brings them. In past lessons we just sat and waited in a hall. We're all much happier to have found Alex. I studied classical piano for several years but found my enjoyment of playing was declining as both learning and playing felt stagnant. I knew nothing of theory and basically felt like I was doing nothing more than note dictation on piano. Then I found Alex through several referrals. His fresh approach to learning was exactly what I needed in respect to improving my own skills both as a performer and as a budding composer. I'd never imagined I could actually create music rather than copy what others created. Alex was the first piano teacher I had ever found who actually combined classical technique, the deep theory behind the music plus the means to apply that theory to create my own music which is something I had always dreamed of doing. I learned there were also highly effective alternative methods of teaching piano making use of current technology. This was in major contrast to the stagnant and stifling approach I had experienced with all of my previous piano teachers. Alex made every lesson fun, creative, and worthwhile. I was trained in classical piano performance for six years (a few of which were at Clavier-Werke here in Austin) before I switched to Alex, and it was the best decision I ever made in respect to my musical development. Alex was the first piano teacher I had who taught me both the theory behind the music, as well as how to apply that theory to create my own music. Alex Bohrer is an amazing piano teacher!!! He created a curriculum specifically for my son that has combined solid technique with basics in composition and improvisation. He uses all genres of music (classical, popular, jazz) as well as different genres of technology (video lessons, various software programs for recording and arranging) to engage my 10 year old. I love and appreciate how he always strives to produce the optimum creative environment for learning for his students.The depth of Alex's arrangements constantly amaze me and showcase his own impressive talents as a musician. Great job Alex! I took a group jazz course from Alex several years ago. As a piano teacher myself, I understand how important it is to convey material in a thoughtful, understandable and patient way. Alex is a great teacher. He adjusts each lesson plan according to the goals and learning pace of the student. I bought only a month of lessons but I learned so much and he provided me with the tools and materials I need to keep learning on my own for a long time.
