Books and coffee go together well, and what better way to enjoy that perfect pairing than to have them both in the same place, at the same time. Cool Beans Library Café, which is located along Maginhawa, prides itself for being the first of its kind in the country: a coffee house that offers locally sourced brews, where customers can linger and pore over a book from their sizable collection of publications that are on display in the store.
Don't expect this to be like your regular coffee shop: there is no WiFi, as the owners would want customers to enjoy the printed literature on the shelves. The place feels much more like a library as chatter is discouraged - one would feel ill at ease engaged in loud conversation when other patrons are engrossed in the many novels, coffeetable books, art books, manga and magazines that are being offered for reading in-store. Cool Beans offers coffee blends from the North of Luzon, such as Kalinga, Benguet and Sagada blend.
Scott, one of the owners, hails from Baguio, and personally knows the growers, the roasters and the suppliers of his robusta coffee beans. It is important to know where your coffee comes from, they say, and Scott has a more personal say on what kind of coffee goes into his stock. Lot, on the other hand, another owner of the cafe, is in charge of curating the titles that go on the shelves, which are basically the key design elements of the cafe's interiors. You can find comfortable chairs and couches, low coffee tables and traditional Igorot weavings, tying up the theme of the Cordilleras to the coffee that is being brewed by the bar.
I personally love the Kalinga coffee, which is balanced and fairly acidic, but with a strong berry profile. The Kalinga coffee goes well with their fudge brownies, which I always drop by for to be enjoyed with a book or to be packed to go. Cool Beans also has pasta and sandwiches on their menu. If you are looking for a calm and relaxing atmosphere where you can catch up with your reading, or if you want a quiet place where you can bring your own materials and notes for studying, then Cool Beans should be your destination. read more
