This place was one of a few stores open in the off-season, offering a lot of Maine themed merchandise covering Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and their own "Cool As A Moose" brand. Prices are in line with any kind of touristy, souvenir, regional sort of merchandise. For this spring season, there are a lot of hoodies and long-sleeves. There are a lot of other items to choose from as well. Service was great. I made some small talk with the nice woman behind the counter and explained the crowd was up for April vacation week. Full season starts in May and I guess the place is a madhouse all summer. Five stars based on how much lighter my wallet was (willingly). read more

Funky cool moosey themed gift shop. Shelves were starting to become bare as the tourist season was ending. Lots of tshirts and hats with witty words. Lots of staff trying to help you find what you didn't know you needed. read more

This is a cute tourist shop with everything you may need to remember your vacation. There is moose mural art on the walls, and of course a giant stuff moose in the doorway. He's a memorable Bar Harbor mascot! read more

A great store! It has so many options for tshirts! They even have a wonderful selection of the soft fabric tshirts that everyone is obsessed with! Pricing is on point! They have so much to chose from... shorts, sweaters, bags, kid stuff, pajamas, trinkets, jewelry, stickers... there is a lot between the two floors! Customer service with a smile! read more

always go there when in Maine. this year, I got a few shirts. the one long sleeve looked like the seems were cut too close. there were holes all along the seems. the other shirts were OK. I called them and it was kind of a joke. I didn't want any thing just to let them know that they may have an issue with their supplier. apparently that was funny to them. the pictures that I sent them showed the holes all along the seems...hem, neck, shoulders, cuffs...they thought it was funny. be careful buying there. read more

Out of the many souvenir shops in downtown Bar Harbor, Cool As a Moose has the best selection of items to meet all of your souvenir needs. The shirts are decently priced (and cute, not fugly or cheap looking like some of the other shops). The shop also sells Acadia National Park items. Don't forget to check out the downstairs area for the kiddos! read more

Your tourist super store and at the end of the season, that is a very good thing as they are looking to move merch at some good discounts. Life is Good shirts are very cute and lots of joke shirts too. Pretty much anything you could want souvenir wise, you can get here. Problem is, I bought a cute Snoopy shirt as a souvenir and when I got home I washed it inside out so it wouldn't have that new shirt stiffness. Imagine my surprise when I pulled it out of the dryer and half of his hand was gone, half the hat and the lettering is starting to fade!!!!! CHEAP @SS SHIRTS!!!!! Thank God I didn't pay full price but beware if you're not buying a Life is Good shirts because it looks like the other shirts are cheap and won't last even ONE FREAKIN' WASH!!! Never even got to wear the dang thing. Not happy. read more

We love shopping at Cool as a Moose. The heavy duty sweatshirts are awesome, but don't plan on putting them in the dryer or buy one size bigger than you need because they will shrink up. This is a great store because the merchandise is really nice, the employees are fun and friendly, and it offers a little bit nicer product than most other t-shirt shacks in Bar Harbor. read more

Average tourist shop with a huge variety of Bar Harbor attire as well as quirky gag gifts. This shop was packed when we walked in and the store has so much merchandise that we were a tad overwhelmed. The prices here were a bit high and the staff seemed uninteresting in helping us out or even interacting with us. That being said, another tourist shop in a saturated area. read more

A total tourist trap, but I am a tourist. Trap me. This place is total one stop shopping for all your souvenir and gifts-for-people-back-home type purchases. Magnets that say Bar Harbor and feature a moose despite the fact that there are no moose in the area? Done. Your roommate will love it. Socks with lobsters on them? Perfect for your little cousin - snap it up! The best thing about the store is that it doesn't limit itself to Bar Harbor ephemera. Here you can also get items that broadly proclaim "MAINE" and items that feature local attractions such as Acadia National Park. I got a spectacularly awesome hoodie with a moose on it. No, I know there are none in the area - but folks back home won't! read more

This is a gift shop. You are going to be surrounded by tourist. Be honest YOU are a tourist and you need lip balm/pens/stickers with moose on them (I may have bought all these things) The stand out here is the staff. AMAZING. Give all those ladies a raise. You can undoubtedly by a t-shirt at every other shop on Main Street in Bar Harbor. Cool as a Moose was my favorite "t-shirt emporium" because they had a large selection of t-shirts and sweatshirts in a variety of sizes. They also sell the "Life is Good" brand which includes t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, stickers, etc. Considering that I don't like to wear snarky messages on my clothing, I was happy that I could find something here to remind me of my trip to Maine without it saying "Life is Crap" or alluding to lobsters in a raunchy way. I found the prices to be rather reasonable, especially if you look through the sale section on the bottom floor. The clothing is of very good quality as well and my t-shirts have held up to numerous workouts, washings, and my yellow lab's teeth. The staff were friendly and helpful despite the ridiculous number of tourists constantly rifling through piles of t-shirts. I specifically remember one man dumping and entire rack of magnets into the water bowl they had for dogs and just walking out of the store like it never happened. I might have killed him. Luckily, these employees have more restraint. A tourist trap? Yes, but what isn't in Bar Harbor? Pick up a little something for everyone in the family and call it a day. Everyone loves a smiling moose/lobster/other random wildlife. PS. There are no moose on Mt Desert Island. So if you counted on seeing one in Acadia National Park, you'll have to get a t-shirt instead. read more

Their staff were super helpful here! We asked them so many questions because it seemed like they were out of our size in just about every shirt on display but everyone in our party ended up buying at least one shirt from here and a knick knack or two. I think their vintage looking Acadia shirts are some of the cutest out of all the gift shops we went in and out of. It's definitely a tourist trap, but they have some cute merchandise that isn't as redundant because it's not carried by every shop in town. I love all the Life is Good stuff that they carry as well, it seems like they make a point not to carry anything negative which is nice. read more

This store sells t-shirts and other paraphernalia related to mooses, lobsters, crabs...... Also carries a lot of local humor, guy and girl humor stuff as well. Fun to browse in this store. This place is always packed full of tourists. They have other store all over New England and in Canada. read more

Cute touristy store here in Maine on Main Street, but I wish they had more Maine-centric items. They are a huge distributor of the Life is Good brand and you can find a ton of that here though. This has to be the best place to buy the funniest and coolest t-shirts in Bar Harbor. The town is filled with souvenirs and t-shirt shops, but this is one of a kind and is huge filled to the back wall and downstairs with not only unique fun designs but a whole Life is Good section downstairs. The staff is friendly and the prices are okay. It is kind of steep for some of the shirts but they are all good quality. They even have some kids designs and some funny joke gags and gifts, magnets and signs etc. A must stop if you are in Bar Harbor! read more

I went here in search of an Acadia T-shirt. They only had one of the shirt I wanted but it was on a mannequin. The staff were extremely rude and said that the store owner doesn't allow them to take shirts off the mannequins so I wasn't able to buy it. Weird policy if you have a paying customer but whatever. I love Love Is Good merchandise, so this store is right up my alley. There are regular LIG items, as well as Bar Harbor/Acadia LIG apparel, there's also a large selection of every souvenir you'd every want. Tie-dye sweatshirts, magnets, stickers, moose antler hats, door mats, stuffed animals and so much more. If you only have time to visit one souvenir shop on Main Street, make a beeline to Cool as a Moose. read more

Cool as a moose...has very cute tee's for the ladies...and are cut to flatter your shape...most are a nice a soft material not that cheap stiff touristy t-shirt material... its actually shirts you would wear...a neat place to pick up souvenirs for your fellow co-workers as well... definitely worth checking out. read more

No trip to MDI is complete without a trip to Cool as a Moose. Every year my family has come here, or that I brought someone with me, this store was a must-stop. Accept no substitutes!! Sure, its touristy, but that's part of the fun! They have nice, quality t-shirts and sweat shirts that you would not be embarrassed to wear. read more

History

Established in 1986.

Cool As A Moose® began in 1986 opening its first store in Bar Harbor, Maine. Following in the years to come were Freeport, Maine, Portland, Maine and lastly Brunswick, Maine. At the end of 2015 the Freeport, Maine location consolidated with the beautiful Headquarters location in Brunswick, Maine. The Brunswick location allows customers to see down to the screen printing production floor where our sister company Artforms Inc.® is located. Manufacturing is back on Maine Street!

While I might buy a T-shirt here or there that I can style, there are gift shops far more stylish than those themed souvenir stores. In comes Spruce & Gussy about two doors down from our hotel on Mt. Desert Rd. Since many of Bar Harbor's businesses are closed for the off-season, I made sure I didn't leave town without buying anything for my Mom, sisters and Aunt-in-Law. Luckily, owner Michelle and I played email tag to confirm my visit for a Monday morning appointment. Spruce & Gussy has different nooks with Kitchen and Beauty items, Books, a Children's corner, some Women's shawls and gorgeous silver jewelry- all locally made. Search more carefully and you'll find high-end pieces and modest ones also. Her gifts have a distinctive Bar Harbor flair without 'Bar Harbor' being all up in your face if you know what I mean. There's no shortage of choices here. Basically everything she has, I wanted for me too.

The woman running the shop told me a little bit about the artist (Boothbay Harbor, I think he's from) and how she bought a cobalt glass pair of earrings from his collection the previous year, different design). They're gorgeous when the light hits them. Highly recommend stopping in to look at the array of human creativity on display!

This shop is HUGE. It's two stories and loaded with tons of things. I found a few items for myself, my mom, and my daughter inside and the staff were very friendly. We stopped in here a few times and I saw a few different people working behind the counter and all greeted us immediately and were friendly. Make sure to stop in here while in town - it's got more than most of the other shops when you take it all in.

This specific review is for the two story "Acadia Shop" located at 85 Main Street. Because the Acadia Corporation is running many stores in Bar Harbor stuff really starts to look the same from store to store but the Acadia Shop stood out to me because upstairs they had some local art and quality LL Bean gear. I enjoyed looking at the prints and notecards from local artists. Also, on a cold and rainy day it was nice to peruse lots of warm and cozy jackets and zip-ups from LL Bean. Downstairs was more souvenir-y like t-shirts, magnets, signs, candy, etc.

So I was in high school back then and there used to be this store called, The 6T's Shoppe. It was a go-to store for all us 90s kids who posed as hippies haha! Yeah, we were all posers back then. We did everything hippies did, but talk to a 60s hippie and they'll all say...."you guys are all posers" LOL Whatever. I was a 90s hippie kid and I worked in the 6T's shoppe until I left to travel around from concert to concert, music fest to music fest...with other *poser* hippies LOL. That job was amazing! I can't say exactly what I would do before work haha! But it made for a fun shift every time. I would make jewelry all day while at work and actually sell quite a bit of it. Store sold everything we little hippies loved. SO! Whenever I come across stores like that...it warms me little heart! Makes me so happy that they still exist. Walking on Main Street in Bar Harbor...you go into many many many MANY! tourist shops that all sell the exact same thing as the next. Then...you come across Bar Harbor Hemporium. It a great sized store and has all things...hippie. I gotta say, it's kinda odd to see a store like this on Main St there. It's very bougie in Bar Harbor. Broke my heart too that there weren't many going in here either. They were there for BH shirts, Maine shirts and magnets, and everything else Maine this and Maine that. So to go to a store like this that sells like..Dead shirts, tie dyes, hemp jewelry, incense, etc... yeah, a little different from the rest of the strip. Don't get me wrong tho, I am very happy it is there and I SO hope it succeeds. Hippie stores need to thrive and stay alive. It makes us 90s kids very happy and brings us back to a time that so wish had never come to an end. Walking into these stores in a sweet little flashback (not that bad kind some get from Cid! Luckily, Cid was always kind to me :) ) but we get a sweet little flashback to a time where life was BEYOND carefree, where we traveled all over the country for god knows how long, where it seemed like everyone got along, social media, cell phones, tech in general was NOTHING like it is today! Back when...again...social media was nonexistent! and that made life so beautiful. Its like a hug from our past, a nice little hug from our past saying...even tho those years have past, your memories haven't. I know that sounds weird...especially when I am talking about a little ole hippie store in Bar Harbor, but there are places like that for all of us that remind us of the 70s, or the 80s, and yep, the 90s. I love places like that. I love that we still see them. We had a couple in Idaho...but I think we are just down to one now and it's in the mall and well...it kind of doesn't count bc it's nothing as cool at the Hemporium. Girl working was ....hmm, maybe a little sketch, but once we started talking to her, she opened up and talked to us like we had been friends for a MINUTE! So she was cool, I guess. Prices were what you'd expect. Not crazy expensive, but not cheap either. I mean, it may be a hippie store and all, but hippie stores have never been cheap. They are for some reason always so overpriced haha! But yeah, it's still Bar Harbor and I imagine the rents for these stores are NOT cheap. Please go if you are in Bar Harbor! Just check it out! Im sure you will find something. Even if you were a preppy college girl during the 90s I am 100% positive you wore hemp necklaces! haha! Why do I say that? Because I used to make and sell them to college girls back then allllll of the time! When I was home in NY or when I went on the road. This store will have something for all of us who were 90s kids and those of us who rocked some of that classic 90s fashion haha! DAMN! We were kind of the coolest kids haha! The store owner/salesperson was very sweet and patient with the several people who wandered in after having dinner nearby on a spring evening. From nautical clothing to nice affordable beach themed jewelry, and picture frames to souvenir glasses with lighthouses and anchors on them, they really had a lot to offer the average tourist. This shop is a bit smaller than some of the other "tourist trap" shops along the strip, but they have a decent selection of high quality items at competitive prices. 2. This shop is dog friendly and also has the cutest dog who is the shops unofficial mascot. He I older and blind but still incredibly adorable. 3. The staff here is exceptional. They are incredibly receptive to customers but not overbearing and intrusive. The staff here was actually the nicest staff we interacted with while in Bar Harbor. 4. They not only have your generic run of the mill tourist attire, but have a huge selection of hand crafted items from local vendors. The jewelry here was gorgeous and I almost died laughing at a lobster calendar which was made by a local lobster fisherman. Overall, this store deserves the five stars because they treat their customers right and have a great selection of items. A few smiles, small talk and a welcoming vibe goes a long way for me!
