Please read this as a 3.5 review. Every other review loves this place, but I'll explain. First, it's out in the middle of nowhere, which is cool because you get to visit on the way out. The building is old and run down....which means excellent hole in the wall! Every employee was wonderful. Greeted by the owners granddaughter, who was an absolute sweetheart, she told us how it worked, and said to start eating! The AYCE buffet was catfish, chicken strips, steak fingers, fries, coleslaw, and hush puppies. And a salad bar. Check Facebook for a menu. There's also AYCE sirloin or ribeye! Then 7 or 8 regular menu items. Homemade desserts while they last. The pecan pie disappeared really fast and the cobbler was pretty darn good! Ok, it's time to eat. Mike and I loved the catfish and homemade tarter sauce. I ate way too much. Everything else was just..ok. I didn't particularly care for the coleslaw or hush puppies, but that's me being picky. Mike didn't like the chicken strips or steak fingers, which I didn't try. I kept getting cold French fries and hush puppies, but my fault for not watching for the hot to be served. All in all, just an ok visit. I do want to return and try again. The wonderful employees are part of a great visit, and if the ribeye is great, you can expect 4 or 5 stars! I was excited to try this place after reading reviews. This fish was hot and pretty good. The chicken was a compressed meat like a chicken McNugget. Fries and hush puppies were the ones you buy in the frozen food department. Nothing special about the salad bar. The potato salad was good. The buffet is now over $17.00 per person. This place is a solid 4 stars if you like good old fashioned restaurants. The fried catfish is amazing. Other than that, it really drops off. Average salad bar. Average French fries. Below average everything else. The fish makes up for it. read more

My family has been going here for years but I've only been one time. I love their all you can eat catfish and I know it has to be hard to keep up with demand on a Saturday night but the only reason there aren't five stars in this review is because there were a couple of pieces of fish which were not as fresh as the others. Besides that, there are plenty of tables and the fish has outstanding flavor. Their salad bar is excellent as well. read more

I really like this place. Have been going sense I was a little boy. Sometimes there's live music. I like how the tables are set up it's like family dining with everyone there. Great food, great family place!!!! Open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5-10 pm. Fish, chicken strips, and steak fingers on the buffet. Occasionally they have some awesome stew on the buffet also. This place is a little hard to find but worth looking for if you're hungry for fish. A buffet with all the fried fish you can eat. The fish is tasty an not real fishy. Some chicken strips and beef stew to pick from also with sides of fries an cold slaw. Also offers a small salad bar. Building is nothing fancy. They also have steak and a few other things on the menu. But if you're craving fried fish go check it out. You won't leave hungry. read more

This is a great place to meet with a large group. Huge dining room with buffet fried catfish, fried chicken, hush puppies, fries, and salad. You can get one of the best chicken fried steaks and baked potato for carry out too. The staff are both friendly and happy to help. read more

The most fresh catfish you can get in this area. This is an all you can eat place and you will not leave hungry. The all you can eat sirloin is tender enough to cut and eat with plastic cutlery. The owners are good people who take care of their customers. You won't get a fancy building and cloth napkins with Cooks. The building is old and you are served on styrofoam plates, but don't let that stop you from trying this place. They are only open on Friday and Saturday evenings. It's half way between Comanche and Rising Star. Worth the drive. read more

As far as restaurant catfish goes, I guess this would be considered okay. They're very popular with the locals and the prices coupled with buffet-style steak/shrimp/catfish/chicken is a great value. They use msg in either the batter or tarter sauce, though, so I can't eat it. (I have allergic reactions to msg) I'd prefer to catch it myself and fry it up in a homemade fish fry. read more

One of our friends said this place had great catfish and my husband was hooked; we had to go. It's a half hour drive from Brownwood, TX, and it's only open two days a week. I don't eat catfish, but found several reviews on yahoo and the reviews on Trip Advisor were the ones that made me excited about going. Specifically, "The buffet has all you can imagine, fish, chicken, steak fingers, etc., etc., and of course, hush puppies and coleslaw. The fish is wonderful as well as the coleslaw and hush puppies." First, you should know that you have to pay before you can be seated and get your food. This should have been my first sign that this was going to be bad food. We paid $11.99 EACH for the buffet, which was listed as "fish, chicken, steak fingers, coleslaw, hush puppies, and salad bar." This "buffet" with "all you can imagine" had: 1. Fried Catfish Strips: My husband loves cat fish and said the cat fish was "good. Better than Humphrey Pete's. Not worth $11.99, though. (sad chuckle because it was more expensive than Chili's or Humphrey Pete's and we only have a budget to go out once a month)" 2. Fried Chicken Strips: I love chicken. I eat it every day. People think I'm crazy for eating so much chicken. The chicken was VERY dry, very bland. It was clearly NOT made in house; it was frozen chicken. I would guess it was Great Value brand chicken strips. I usually buy Tyson breaded chicken strips, and those are better than these. Notably, there were only THREE of the strips in the buffet, which means those of us who would not eat fish (half our party) had to wait ten more minutes for them to microwave more chicken. The chicken we did eat was also cold! 3. Hush Puppies: I'm from New Jersey. Maybe they don't know what a hush puppy is in Texas. Cook's Fish Barn "hush puppies" were dark brown fried cornbread index finger-sized sticks, which were dry, gummy, and had no taste whatsoever. I ate one, and that was too many. 4. French fries: Great Value crinkle-cut frozen fries, over-cooked to boot. 5. Coleslaw: A big tub of industrial-strength coleslaw. 6. "Salad Bar" with Iceberg Lettuce: A big tub of industrial-strength iceberg lettuce cut into two-inch squares. Raw onions. Hours old fresh-from-the-jar pickles and hot peppers. Tomatoes. Shredded cheddar cheese. The bagged kind, not fresh grated. Tubs of unidentified creamy dressings. THAT'S IT. First of all, you can't even make a salad with those ingredients. Iceberg lettuce and tomatoes do not a salad make. So, that is not "a salad bar." Second of all, I don't know what the dressings were, but I do know that none of them was healthy because all of them were creamy dressings. Second of all, if you are out of anything in your buffet, particularly when your buffet only has seven things in it and only one of them (maybe) are you not pouring out of a bag, particularly when you require the customer to pay before they can eat, you tell them you are out of stuff. What the heck's a "steak finger"? I don't know, because in the hour we spent there wondering where they were, wondering where the rest of the buffet was, none ever materialized in the buffet. So, dessert. We ask the waitress where are the desserts that are listed on the dry-erase board "menu" up front. They're behind they register. Why are they behind the register? Because they are an "additional fee." That's right, folks, for $11.99, you just bought yourself a meal that is worse than what you could make at home for 50 cents, and you didn't even get someone to serve it to you. We got some "soft serve ice cream in a cone" for $1.25. The cone was not a fancy cone, but one of those dollar-store sugar cones. The "soft serve ice cream" is, in fact, not soft-serve ice cream at all, but a soft ice-cream like thing with little bits of ice in it. NOW some people are going to say that is awful, but in Jersey we have a little something called Rita's cream slush, and that's what this tastes like, and we loved it. Plus, it was a foot high, which was pretty cool. 2 choices: vanilla and chocolate. Seating was just as bad as you can imagine. I want you to think back to your college days. Remember when your buddies wanted to throw that big party but make it "kinda fancy" so they did it in the basement and used the beer pong tables as "fancy dinner tables?" Yeah, kind of like that, but don't even bother with a table cloth or anything. Also, no ketchup on the tables. Because ketchup is cheaper by the gallon. So, if you want ketchup, you can get it at the "buffet" with a ladle out of the ketchup drum. Enjoy the randomly inserted puffs of smoke while you eat your microwaved and/or over-cooked fried food. Not sure if people are allowed to smoke in the building, which has no dividers, or if it wafted in from outside the metal shack. Unless you live in Comanche, TX, it's not even worth the trip for the cream slush in a cone. Icing on the cake: Cash or check ONLY. No alcohol. read more

this was my second trip to Cook's Fish Barn, the difference was we had 20 other people with us, the trip out was fantastic, Limo Bus with everyone on board telling stories laughing and just enjoying everyone's company, once we arrived we were met by Pop, the owner and the name he goes by, by everyone, once you start talking to him you immediately feel part of the family. we had the private dining area so we could stay together while we ate. everything on the menu is fresh and cooked that morning. the one difference with Cook's is not the great fresh food, but the people, both those behind the counter and those eating at the tables, a quick glance you'll notice that the people that frequent Cook's are the heart and soul of this great nation, great American people. total strangers that will share a smile, a handshake or a story or two, watching Pop's and his family working you realize real quick his successful recipe, Caring, Love and Friendship, not many restaurants stay in business for 38 years doing the same thing but Cook's is not your typical restaurant, you feel surrounded by family. if you never been to a place like that, well then I suggest you take the beautiful drive across Beautiful Texas and stop in and say hello Pops and his family, oh and come hungry because it's all you can eat Buffet. read more
