After years of advocating for my son and searching for a school that could meet his unique learning…read moreneeds, we had high hopes for READ. My son made meaningful progress in reading, and I am grateful for the school's evidence-based dyslexia instruction. However, our experience also revealed important limitations for students with co-occurring autism, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges. As both a parent and an LCSW specializing in autism, I approached READ as a partner. I expected early collaboration around my son's strengths, challenges, and the strategies that had helped him succeed elsewhere. Before significant behavioral concerns emerged, I requested simple accommodations such as movement breaks and fidget tools but was told they would be disruptive to other students. To my knowledge, my son never had a proactive support plan. My experience was that my son's behaviors were addressed primarily through discipline rather than understanding their function or teaching replacement skills. As behavior logs became increasingly detailed, it became harder to distinguish meaningful concerns from age-appropriate immaturity or autism-related social differences. It was difficult to watch my son become increasingly discouraged, isolated, and unsure of how to be successful at school. Despite repeated efforts to collaborate, I saw little emphasis on proactive intervention, positive reinforcement, or identifying the function of behavior. My concern was never that READ had limits to the support it could provide, but that those limits did not become clear until the end of our experience. During our final meeting, READ told me they could no longer support my son unless he first attended a behavior program. That recommendation differed from those of the public school district and the professionals involved in his care. I was also told READ does not have a behaviorist, therapist, or behavioral specialist on staff. The end of our time at READ was especially disappointing. The focus was almost entirely on my son's challenges, with little acknowledgment of his strengths or growth. He was also excluded from the school's end-of-year BBQ as his placement ended. For autistic children, thoughtful transitions matter, and I wish his departure had reflected that he was a valued member of the community. READ can be an excellent fit for many students with dyslexia. I share my experience so families of children with additional developmental or behavioral needs can ask informed questions before enrolling, including: * How are autism- and ADHD-related needs supported? * What proactive accommodations and interventions are available? * What behavioral or mental health expertise is available on campus? * At what point does the school determine that a student's needs exceed the supports it can provide?

These teachers don't actually teach ANYTHING, all students are always on the Chromebooks and never get assigned any worksheets, or any real work, this specifically goes to all of the new teachers because all the old ones left. Lots of past teachers were leaving without anybody knowing why which made the learning for my daughter's second year drop. This school also does portfolio 6th-8th, but for my daughter's experience in 7th grade they had no portfolio help and the teachers were barely present. Beware, your children wont be learning in this school.

We worked with numerous tutors, tried vision therapy and worked many hours with her at home. Eventually we realized that she may have an undiagnosed learning disorder. We are now in our fourth month of tutoring at the READ Learning Center and we are seeing results. The admin and staff are welcoming, supportive and quick to respond to all questions and concerns. First time PT patient!! I've been experiencing neck pain and self-diagnosed myself with 'tech neck'…read moreafter nearly 8 years working a computer job. I got a referral and once that went through, I called to make an appointment. I was able to get one SAME DAY. I came in the afternoon, parking lot was looking full but I was able to snag a spot close to the entrance. I walked in and PT is on the first floor, nice! I got checked in pretty smoothly and I didn't have a co-pay but we will see if I get hit with a bill later down the road. I did not have to wait that long before I was called in, probably less than 3 minutes. I had an evaluation with MF and she was great! Super professional and taught me a handful of stretches and movements to perform. She felt my neck, checked my mobility, and watched how I would work from home standing. MF gave me a lot of tips and printed out a sheet so that I can reference when I'm at home. She gave me all the tools; now it's on me to change my posture and tight pec muscles. I hope that I don't need to come back to PT because hopefully, I take everything that MF taught me and implement it into my daily routine and create a routine for myself. I think it's important to do a PT visit because we can get lost on the internet just doing random arm stretches or buying a neck massager when we really need to stretch our chest, build upper back muscles, and work on our posture. I had about four therapy sessions with him. I think Chad is an excellent therapist. Two days ago, I started a lower back therapy evaluation session with Dale Woolley. Even though it was the first therapy session but he squeezed in some exercises for me, and sent me home with a program to practice, in video and email as well. He's an awesome therapist and he has great advices on how to handle my lower back pain.

My 18 year old Fortune Scholar will be graduating 5th in his class on June 11 of this year. He…read moregraduated from CRC on May 23 with an A.A. in Liberal Arts, and an A.S. in General Science. For being in the top 20 of his class, he's been offered a full-ride to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and will join their Electrical Engineering program when he gets back from bootcamp for the US Air Force Reserve! My child is definitely an over achiever, but please don't sleep on Fortune School. I enrolled him as a Kindergartener. He's the baby of 6 and the only one FORTUNate enough to be in a charter school from beginning to end. The difference between my public school educated kids and him is glaringly obvious. He has been poured into not only at home, but his educators have literally empowered, and uplifted this kid to unimaginable heights, and the experience with my older children in public school settings was never like this. I especially appreciate the goal of "closing the achievement gap." That means that my little brown son wasn't unnecessarily sent home when he was in class talking too much the way public school did my older children. He was treated with patience. He was advised that there was a time and a place for his voice to be heard. He was given chances and not just pushed aside, overlooked, and treated like a nuisance. From Fortune Elementary School, to Ephraim Williams College Prep, all the way to Fortune High School, this kid was loved for 13 straight years outside of my home and I'm not just proud of the young man he is and is becoming. I'm also proud of every single staff member we've encountered along the way. Some of them were already a part of our lives, but the rest will always be as dear as family every time we cross paths. My son right above him also attended from 2nd to 8th grade. He was a bit more of a challenge, because he just didn't do as well in such a structured environment, but the teachers loved him and covered him as long as he was one of theirs. One day after work, I went to pick the kids up from daycare, and my provider advised me that child #5 wasn't allowed to leave the school, and I was advised to go there to get him. I was LIVID! I didn't feel like going the opposite direction on Stockton Blvd. to get him, and I was ready to give somebody at fortune school a piece of my mind about it. However, when I pulled up to the school, I parked directly in front of Mrs. Howards 3rd grade class and what I saw brings tears to my eyes even now and it's been 10 years. My son was seated at a table, obviously working on a difficult assignment, but Mrs. Howard was next to him, not seated, but on her knees, on the bare floor, tutoring him one-on-one. School had let out at around 4pm. I wasn't off till 5, and it took me about 30 minutes to get to the daycare, another 10 to round up the kids, and another 10, to drive back to the school. So here it is nearly 2hrs after school had let out, when Mrs. Howard should have been home with her own children, but she was sacrificing her free time to help ensure the success of mine. She has held a special place in my heart ever since. I have similar stories about, Monisha Blake, Odisa Nyong, Mr. Emeh (RIP), Malcolm Ajai, Mrs. Kirksey, Ms. Royal, Mrs. East, Mrs. Ibarra, Mr. Jones, Joseph Gambino, Stefon DuBose, Marcus Atkins, and many others. I would recommend the Fortune family of schools to any family that wants to give their child a quality education, while preparing them for college from the very first day.
