History The house was built by Robert Wynn, a younger son of John Wynn of Gwydir Castle. He had served with the British Ambassador in Bruges, and travelled around the Continent. When he retired to Conwy, aged 50, he built himself a town house incorporating the latest features and styles, reflecting his prestige. It was built 1576-1585. After his death, a dispute over his inheritance meant the house was eventually split into a lodging house, and also functioned as a school, and then the headquarters of the local antiquarian society, before being taken over and restored by Cadw (Welsh Historic Monuments). The house This large building occupies a whole block of Conwy's streets. The main frontage consists of an elaborate gatehouse, courtyard and then the main house, which has its own courtyard and garden. The exterior has been plastered and limewashed, as it would have been originally. Inside, the rooms are a mixture of the 'working' rooms of the house kitchen, storage rooms, servants' quarters and so on, and the grander rooms intended for Wynn and his family. These have impressive fireplace mantels and panelling, and particularly large expanses of decorative plasterwork. In many places this is highly coloured, and includes decorative friezes of coats of arms, Tudor roses and other heraldic devices (and above all, Wynn's initials, RW, which appear everywhere). Another recurring motif is that of naked caryatids, carrying bowls of strawberries on their heads. They wear loincloths of leaves, and cover one breast, leaving the other bare. The plasterwork images are often touchingly naive and primitive, as local plasterers tried their best to reproduce unfamiliar images copied from pattern books. The house also has some impressive furnishings, although these have been sourced separately and are not original. In the attic, one room is furnished as it would have been in the early 19th century, as the home of a lodger, a washer-woman. Practicalities There is a guided audio tour available, which is well worth using, although the Tudor jingle which precedes each section may get irritating after a while. There are also static presentations on aspects of Tudor and later life. Access for those with restricted mobility is limited, due to the presence of stairs and uneven floors. There is also a shop at the entrance selling the usual cards, books and gift items.

The lower floors date from the 14th centuries, and the upper floors from the mid-16th century. During its long life, it has had many incarnations, including a mediaeval merchant's house, a coffee shop and Temperance Hotel. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1934. Different rooms are furnished in different styles and periods, and include a kitchen, parlour, drawing room, and hotel bedroom. I can only review what I have seen of the Quay which was on the Conwy Feast…read more Beautiful scenery, sky and the weather was gorgeous. We got into conwy on the train from Bangor ( Gwynedd ) . The day ticket for the festival was £8 and that included admittance into all the food and drink tents ( also DR.Zigs Bubble Dome ). The festival was extremely crowded and the quay not being the widest place in the world it was a bit touch and go with small children with the rivers edge. There was a guy with a TRIPLE pram now that really took the biscuit! Anyway its a brilliant place to just let the world go by and make you remember its not all about stress and everything around us!!

Llandudno has for some time attempted to cash in on it's slightly dubious Alice In Wonderland…read moreconnections. Alice Liddell, the inspiration for the character of Alice was known to holiday with her family at a house called Penmorfa on the West Shore. The house later became the Gogarth Abbey hotel. Charles Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, is rumoured to have visited Penmorfa although the evidence appears to suggest he didn't. The Alice links are now beginning to fade. The Gogarth Abbey was briefly renamed the Penmorfa but has since been demolished. The Alice museum in Trinity Square closed down when the owner retired and couldn't find anyone willing to take it on as a going concern. So if you're an Alice fan all that's left to see is the statue of the White Rabbit. And how disappointed will you be if you go out of your way to find it. The first thing you'll notice is how small it is. The rabbit is about the size of a real-life rabbit. As the statue has been the target of vandals in the past it's now protected by a steel cage and surrounded by a "moat". The cage obstructs your view and moat prevents you from getting a close up look (unless you've planned ahead and brought wellies). If you really want a look the statue is located just past the boating lake at the West Shore but it really needs to be relocated to a more appropriate location. Preferably one where you can get close enough to actually see it and where it can safely be locked away at night.

Llandudno's Camera Obscura, which is located on the lower slopes of the Great Orme, is one of the…read morelesser known attractions the town has to offer. It was built around 1860 and uses a series a mirrors to create panoramic views of the town below and surrounding scenery. It isn't always open, it's seasonal and weather permitting, and there is a small charge for entry when it is. However even it isn't open the views are spectacular enough with just the naked eye. If you look straight ahead you'll see the town of Llandudno spread out below you, look left and you'll see the North Shore and out to sea and look right and you'll look out over the West Shore and Conwy Estuary and down towards the foothills of Snowdonia. You'll need to be fairly active to reach the Obscura which is located close to the cable car station. Just head up through the Happy Valley and veer left at the top. A bit of effort but on a bright sunny day it's well worth the effort.

We enjoyed Llandudno a lot more than we expected. The Pier, the Promenade, the seaviews. It's a…read morepretty place to be. The Promenade stretches along the beach from the Pier to the Paddling pool in the east. Almost 1.5 miles in length. Most visitors flock around the Pier area. The further east you walk, the less people you will see. And it's a real nice thing to do, walking the Promenade. Even busy, the Pier is a good starting point. Grab some snacks, some ice cream and get on your way. There's countless benches along the Promenade - all with seaviews :) So it's a perfect spot to enjoy some snacks or a small picnic. The Promenade is very wide, so it doesn't feel crowded. Bikes, dog walkers...there's space for everybody. There is a carpark near the pier, but always full. Some spots along the Promenade, but they're hard to find. We parked just a block away from the Promenade at the Venue Cymru carpark and were really happy with it. Plenty of empty spots.

Llandudno promenade is a very wide strip running the length of Llandudno bay and is perfect for…read morewalks, runs and cycling. At nighttime it's really peaceful and light up with multi coloured lights between the lampposts. There's access along its length for wheelchair users and buggys at regular intervals.
