It's a 10 minute walk or two minute drive. Also, the office is pretty fancy with their coffee, tea, hot chocolate machine. I had to ask for assistance. This is the second doctor's office that I've gone to that is this fancy. Dr. Rose was gentle, which I appreciated as I hate all wellness exams that require any physical contact or pressure. Now, they've added insult to injury by announcing that they're going to start charging patients for basic services--things we can't even do ourselves. Even something as simple as a prescription refill feels like you're bothering the nurse or PA. It's crystal clear: they don't care about patient well-being anymore, they just care about squeezing more money out of you. And to top it all off, they had the nerve to send out this email announcing the new fees--while shamelessly promoting their extra services at the bottom. But since I never heard back from them, I am sharing it below. ********************************************** I hesitated to write this, hoping that I would get a survey from the practice itself and could keep this "in-house" so to speak. However, the fact that I am still upset more than a month after my appointment has me writing this review. I had a LAP Band put in 12 years ago by Dr. Barry Greene. I had no problems with it, and I felt good about the practice. Recently I have been having some gastric issues and my primary care physician (PCP) ordered a CAT Scan of my GI tract among other things. My PCP thought that the band had slipped and asked me to make an appointment for a follow-up with Dr. Greene. My appointment was in late September. That day I had a fluoroscope (a procedure where you drink some barium while having a scan while swallowing) which was read by Dr. Joseph Greene. He showed me some "rough edges" on my esophagus. I asked him what this could mean, and he replied that I needed to come back to talk to Dr. Barry as this could be an issue and that he (Barry,) as the LAP band expert, needed to be the one to talk to me. The earliest appointment was for late October. So far no complaints except for the long wait and lack of immediate information. I now had a month to wait and think about all of the terrible things those "rough edges" could mean and by the time of my appointment I was about as nervous as one could be when one knows in the back of their mind that if something were truly wrong I would have been rushed to the front of the queue. At least that was how I comforted myself when I was most scared. The day of the appointment with Dr. Barry arrived. I was taken into the back by an assistant and asked the questions I expected to be asked, about medications, medical history, etc. Then I was asked, "So why are you here today?" I looked at the assistant with incredulity and answered "I don't know. I was told I needed to come back to see Dr. Barry, so you tell me." She excused herself without addressing my answer. Barry then came in. He glanced at my chart and at the fluoroscope photo and pronounced that the band was perfectly situated. He then asked me a few questions, after which he said that the band was working perfectly. He explained why the band was working perfectly. He then started to talk about other surgery options, at which point I stopped him, pointed to the photo and asked "Well what about this? The jagged edges of my esophagus? He answered "Oh, that's nothing. It's just the contractions from swallowing." He then returned to his spiel about a Gastric Sleeve. Nothing acknowledging the fact that I had been worried for over a month about these jagged edges. Nothing to reassure me that yes, I was correct in thinking that they would have scheduled me for an earlier appointment if something were really wrong. Instead, I was left with the definite impression that no one had opened my chart, much less looked at it, since my last appointment, meaning that if something really were wrong, they wouldn't know... or care. I left feeling the following: 1. That the questions about my current band and the pronouncement that it was "working perfectly" was simply a "cover your ass" move. 2. That this second appointment was for no purpose other than to sell me more surgery. 3. That I was the victim of a medical "bait and switch." This review is not to question the competence of this practice and the providers therein. They are excellent surgeons, but the lack of empathy was astounding. As I said in the beginning of the missive, I am still upset.

Compliments of a shattered ankle obtained during a Sunday hiking accident, I was surprised to call…read moreinto National Orthopedics on Monday morning and get a day-of appointment with Dr. Douoguih. ...Seems like the surprises never stopped coming... After sitting in the waiting room for an hour and half and then another 30 minutes in the examination room, Dr. Douoguih finally came in to diagnose my problem ankle. That is, after introducing himself then leaving the room for another 15 minutes to answer a phone call. Waiting for medical attention usually doesn't bother me, as it seems to be expected and inevitable, but this experience was below my expectations. Once Dr. Douoguih came back into my room, he put the x-rays in the holder and pointed to a couple bones, and then said something along the lines of, "You're young and active. You need surgery to fix the problem. I'll have my surgeon coordinator come in to schedule it for this week." Surprised to learn that surgery would be the remedy, hundreds of thoughts and questions went running through my mind. But it seemed like before I had time to alter the jumbled ideas in my head to sensible questions for Douoguih, he was out the door and on to the next patient. Don't get me [or him] wrong, when the surgery day came, Douoguih greeted me and made sure I was comfortable before the anesthesia knocked me out. And the incisions he made on either side of my ankle seem to be done with such precision that I will have minimal scaring. But when I take my "minimal scaring" into his office for follow up appointments, I'll definitely expect a lengthy wait time and anything-but-lengthy discussion with Douoguih. Overall, I think Dr. Douoguih is a very professional, knowledgeable, well-known and talented orthopedic surgeon, who [perhaps due to over-scheduling] doesn't have enough hours in the day to fully tend to each patient's questions and concerns. So if you're looking for someone to sit down with you and explain every bump, bruise, break, incision and/or surgical procedure, I would advise you to consider other orthopedists in the area. (Like my post-snowboarding accident orthopedist -- Dr. Wellborne at VA Hospital Center -- Legit.) ...But if you're looking for a quick diagnosis to your problem, a quick 'squeeze-me-in' appointment or perhaps a quick surgical fix, Dr. Douoguih is your go-to guy.
