Wow. I've never had a massage quite like Marvin's. I came in with some deep tension, built up over years of carrying babies and toddlers, working out, and working at a desk. He explained the difference between deep pressure and deep tissue and asked me which I wanted--deep tissue I said, and he got to work. At first I was a little baffled by the technique because I've never experienced true myofacial release before but one day later, I'm a convert. My whole body is more limber and more fluid than it's been in years. Not going to lie though--there were times when I wanted to laugh because it was a little ticklish and cry because it was so painful. Think the toughest parts of a foam rolling routine but for an entire session. A few times I asked for modifications and he quickly obliged. So I totally know that I could've avoided any pain altogether but it was the type of hurt where you just know is doing the body good. And as I type this, I'm grateful I stuck through it. Highly highly recommend Marvin if youre looking to fine tune your body and create more openness so you can show up better in the rest of life. Also, don't miss the curious critters when you come in! Marvin has done what no doctor or medication or therapist has been able to do before- given me a life nearly free of chronic back pain! I am a physician and have had chronic severe back pain since I was a teenager. Since I began operating more frequently at work, the pain had also moved into my shoulders. In addition, I am an outdoor sports athlete and rock climb or kiteboard every chance I get. Needless to say this doesn't help my pain. The only relief I ever got from the pain was from massage and even then it was a brief break, hours to maybe one or two days, with temporary decreased pain to help me get through my work and take care of my patients as a doctor. And then I met Marvin. He gives a massage like I have never experienced before; this is a serious massage. He really is a therapist and a healer. He isolates each tight muscle group and works to knead and stretch them until they release. He doesn't coat you in lotion or zone out while working on you. He is very intentional in each movement and technique. He also makes it very much a team job if you like, responding very well to input about what feels best or where to focus. I rarely give input though as it's nearly perfect every time! He understands anatomy well and is also very conscientious with my multiple sports bruises and tweaks to not cause any discomfort while still giving the deep tissue work that I need. Best of all, after our sessions my back and shoulder pain is essentially gone for up to two weeks, allowing me to focus on operating on patients and on enjoying my outdoor sports pain free for the first time in my life. I don't know what I will do when I have to move away because Marvin has changed my life! As a bonus, he plays lovely classical piano music during the sessions. It is truly my moment of calmness and therapy in a hectic life. Words can't express my gratitude to Marvin. I highly recommend him for those with pain, athletes, and anyone in need of a serious massage. He will work with you to meet your goals with massage therapy- whether that's relaxation or pain relief or anything else! read more

I tried this place because I bought a Groupon deal for two 60min Clinical Deep-Tissue Massages for $82. The short summary: very effective deep tissue massages (slightly painful at some points but magical range of motion and removal of chronic musculoskeletal back pain immediately afterwards; you WILL be sore the next day). However, logistical difficulties such as not having a receptionist, back-to-back hourly bookings, and only having 1 room running will shorten your actual massage time. The first time I went, I was there on time, and Marvin opened the door right as my massage appointment was supposed to start (they don't have a receptionist); we spent 15 minutes filling out a form and Marvin talked through all of the membership options I could purchase afterwards. My massage time was 45 minutes rather than the full 60 minutes. The second time I went, there was a customer ahead of me, so my massage time started late again... time was more around 50 minutes this time though because I didn't need to fill out any forms, so closer to the 60 minutes. I think I would come here again if the price and massage time were adjusted a bit; if it's a 45 minute massage, please lower the price a bit. Overall, Marvin was very professional and provides effective clinical deep tissue massages; I'm happy I have found a place I can go to alleviate chronic musculoskeletal back pain. Like another posting, we chose the Groupon two massage deal. The location is in the 2nd floor of the mall, it's hard to find, and not listed in the store listings. My fault, I should have gotten there earlier. It's a one massage room, with a reception desk type of deal. Well appointed. As to the massage, unfortunately it was not good. He did focus on the areas I listed, but honestly, he just kept missing the areas that hurt, several times just hitting the bone. The worst part was that he kept digging his fingernails in, and when I looked in the mirror there were scratches all over my back, several of them rather pronounced. Usually there is some type dialogue or way to establish yourself....the masseuse seemed to have no interest, and actually seemed to be annoyed by my presence. I won't be returning for the 2nd visit. There are plenty of qualified and talented massage therapists in Carrboro and Chapel Hill. read more

HE ACTUALLY BROKE SKIN AND LEFT ME WITH SCARS!!! This is NOT ok!!!! This is so highly unprofessional and now I'm left with these cuts in very visible areas. I have never had such a bad experience in my life - I am literally both physically and emotionally scarred from this. read more

As a physician I am well aware of the benefits of preventive measures to lessen injurious health conditions and disease. I would rank deep tissue massage, Yoga, exercise and good nutrition among these. For the last 18 months Marvin has helped me treat a sore neck and shoulder, lessen IT band inflammation to the point that I can now benefit from his services to lessen the chance for future injury. Marvin is a kind man who separates musscles from each other, kneads out scar tissue while answering any questions you may have. His evening hours also fit a working persons schedule. My adult sons think Marvin to be the. BEST massage they've ever experienced. Marvin says he sees many of their friends . I have one reservation about recommending Marvin. That being that the more who find out about him, the less available appointments will he have. read more

Contact high was... something. Staff was nice... but I arrived 15 minutes early for the door to be locked. Okay... so I STOOD outside until five minutes after my appointment time. Finally get inside and they're a half hour behind. Got a special on Groupon with Brian and as nice as he was, it was the worst massage ever. After massages I never have a kink in my neck or an ache in my back and I still had the same problems from when I arrived.... will not be returning. read more

I have been to many massage therapists over the years and I have never felt so comfortable as I did with Marvin. I had told him about my misfortunes with previous therapists and he completely set me at ease. His professionalism, educational knowledge, and great communication skills definitely set him apart. When I first arrived, he was already there waiting promptly and ready with my paperwork. We went over injuries, goals, misconceptions, communication, and the massage packages. He extended my massage, which was extremely kind of him, and then awaited my exit with a peaceful and gracious good-bye. I was happy I had found a great facility that focused on education and appropriate treatment plans. I was currently maxed at my monthly budget at the time so I was unable to commit to a package or to go again, and now, I have moved to another city. I would highly recommend Contact High and would love to go again if I'm ever back in Chapel Hill and have the funds. read more

I am studying for the bar exam and my roommates surprised me with a groupon to get a massage here. I was hoping for a relaxing hour to de-stress. While the place was decently clean and the service professional (this is definitely not a spa), I left feeling quite sore but thought this was semi-normal since I have gotten massages in the past and have been a little sore. However, when I woke up this morning, I have several bruises on my arm and back, as well as brush burns and scrape marks (from fingernails I assume?) on my back. I have NEVER experienced this from a massage before. I am in lots of pain today and wish I never went in the first place. Do not recommend! read more
