I think that the Kazimier has secured the top spot as the quirkiest venue in terms of decor and…read moreevents in Liverpool. It's one of those cultish venues that will go down in the city's history. They are well known for their bizarre themed nights that they put on either once a month or once every six weeks. These nights are so popular they often sell out within a day and are they hype of the week as they approach. They often have live bands and a great fancy dress theme, and it's a well known fact that people really make a big effort and go all out for these occasions. Other than these nights, the best promoters in the city seem to bring quirky bands from all over the world to play this fairly small venue as it has a great atmosphere that a lot of the bigger venues don't have!

You get a varied mixture of bands playing here, from local legends and newbies all the way up to reknowed international acts. Most recently the Liverpool label Antipop put on their birthday event and it was the best night out in... forever. The old montly Psycho Motel night that was on here in the past is now a part of legend. There is a decent variety of drinks to choose from and while it's not the cheapest, it's not ridiculous either. Perfectly resonable! For you lot who smoke (poor you) there's an outdoor area with seating for you to puff away. It's good for non-smokers too to be honest, if you just want to get some air. The Kazimier, along with Mello Mello, is the musical hub of Liverpool and somewhere you should be spending the majority of your time. Absolutely essential venue that you CANNOT miss out on.

FACT is easily one of the best things Liverpool has to offer, if not THE best thing…read more FACT is a combination of cinema, art gallery, exhibition space, bar, cafe and shop. Yes, all of that. The cinema is absolutely top notch, it is the best cinema I have ever visited. They show a good mix of both major releases and independent films. You'll find big blockbusters rubbings shoulders with arthouse movies, or Japanese animation. They even show classics from time to time. Perfect. The art exhibitions change on a regular basis so it's hard to specifically review those. My favourite in recent memory is the "History of Music Video" piece they had in, where you could go through the evolution of the medium. I spent ages in here and wrote down a good few obscure artists I hadn't heard of so I could check them out later. Anyway, the exhibitions are always fantastic and imaginative. The bar is also much-loved. It's a favourite hang-out spot of mine, even if I'm not in the building for anything else. It doesn't boast a HUGE range of drinks but the atmosphere is always nice, relaxed and friendly. The cafe downstairs is equally as good, especially lately as it's been re-done and now offers a bigger selection. I'm especially fond of the different green teas. Anyway, FACT is a must. It's essential. It is the heart of Liverpool.

It shows a full range of film, both commercial and more obscure or 'arty' movies. One of its 4 cinema's has the best luxury sofa seating ever - it's so comfy. Plus there is a cafe/ bar and you can take your wine into the cinema screens to enjoy while you watch your movie. FACT = Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, so it's not just a cinema, it also has 3 art galleries showing various art exhibitions. FACT is an amazing arts centre - I want one in Belfast :-(

The restaurant which comes with a rather cool name, "Ziba" caters for all your boutique hotel dining needs. The produce is locally sourced from a farm owned by the same family and the menu is described as English with a modern twist. I am yet to dine here but have frequented the bar lounge for a few at a birthday bash. There are also gym and spa facilities and for art lovers they also have a gallery room where local artistic talent is shown off from time to time. All in all a very hospitable destination, whether it is for a night's stay or a nice meal. An independent family run business always carries browny points from me as I always feel they are more welcoming. Don't take my word for it, check it out yourself.....los gentes

Continuing my reviews from last Thursday when I took Australian members of my family for a whistle…read morestop tour of some of the restaurants, bars and cultural hotspots of this great city of mine... I wanted to take my uncle and his girlfriend to The Racquet Club as I have always had a very soft spot for this incredibly elegant venue in the heart of the business district, having been to a couple of beautiful weddings here and also having produced a tea dance event there myself several years ago which was just lovely. I also wanted to take them there as I was looking for somewhere classy that did cocktails (our first choice, Panoramic, was fully booked with afternoon tea takers). I remembered the stunning tea inspired cocktails the bar staff had created at my tea dance event so I thought this was a great second choice. Sadly, what I had forgotten was that The Racquet Club only does cocktails for special occasions and not during normal service as their bar is not set up for it! We were so disappointed! However, having had to go down the route of more standard drinks I must say we were very pleased. My uncle loved his half pint of Bombadier (they don't get beer like that in Australia!) and the glasses of wine his girlfriend and I had (a French Rose and a white) were chilled to perfection and delicious. The only other thing I would say is that even though the surroundings of the Racquet Club are beautiful and quietly elegant I do think they could get away with playing some classical music or other quiet, appropriate music if only to give a little atmosphere and cover the noise of the girl cleaning the glasses behind the bar! I will continue to have a soft spot for the Racquet Club but I must remember that they don't do cocktails and that it can be VERY quiet at times!
