Today I was at a Consignworks estate sale in Carlisle, MA. I love estate sales because they are full of mispriced items, both over- and underpriced. The Consignworks one was an exception because all items were ridiculously overpriced. For example, a $625 oil painting of an old, ugly woman. The tag stated the woman's name, as though anyone cared, but not the artist's identity. A $225 unsigned painting (i.e, a copy). A used Craftsman wet/dry vacuum priced higher than a brand new one at Lowe's Made-in-China knives priced $12 apiece. Naturally, only a handful of customers purchased anything. I wonder what happens with stuff that Consignworks does not sell. read more

We simply were thrilled with the work that Consignworks did in organizing a virtual estate sale for us and pulled it off flawlessly despite the challenges of the pandemic. Debra and her team spent many hours photographing our furniture and belongings, pricing them fairly, and posting them on their website. The actual 3 day sale was executed superbly. Not only did Debra lead the estate sale, but she coordinated a consignment shop to pick up the items that weren't sold in the Estate Sale and we didnt have to be involved at all. Finally, she coordinated a "clean out" service to come by and take care of the few leftover items that were not picked up by the consignment shop. Folks, this is an updated review, as this is the second estate sale they have done for us. Debra Bacon and her staff continue to impress and succeed. Clearly during the pandemic, things have changed greatly. My first sale in the house had hundreds of people. Debra, smartly now, during Covid-19 times, runs an online estate sale, with brilliant pictures. She makes appointments for people to pick up the items, giving them a one or two day period, BUT they pay upfront. In one week of the online sale, 95% of my furnishings were sold, and the remaining few items were donated to the lovely mover Chris, who is also just amazing. My check came by overnight one week later. Consignworks CONTINUES to amaze me. Old world customer service, and pure competence and results to boot. Do I love them? You better believe I love them. I just recently walked through a warehouse sale in Canton, Ma. hosted by Consignworks, that contained light fixtures, and barstools. I picked up a pair of dark-wood barstools that I now have placed beautifully in my bar. While I was at the sale, the staff were very kind and easily accessible. They gave me fair wiggle room with the prices. And I felt as-though i got a very good deal! As a customer, I was very content and would recommend that more people come to their sales! read more

We used ConsignWorks for an estate sale in March of 2010. It was a big job, and one that we had no experience with. We called a few places and none of them seemed to be very good; either they weren't quick to come to the house or they didn't seem very enthused about the job. It turns out that estate sales is a sideline for many of these people, so it's not their primary business. Fortunately we also stumbled about ConsignWorks, which isn't a name I'd normally associate with an estate sale. The owner, Tana, came out right away and walked us through the process in detail. Because of her we were far better prepared than we would have been otherwise. She had a large staff that came out and did the sale (I think there were 7 or 8 of them all together) and each seemed to have an area of expertise (e.g. furniture, tools, basements, etc.) so they could divide the work and come up with a rational price for each item. On the day of the sale there were ~500 people that attended the first day. They handled this well and the house didn't look like 500 people had trampled through it when they were done. There was only 1 mishap, where somebody essentially stole on of the Bose cube speakers on a wall, and Tana took full responsibility and paid for the item - as that is considered part of the house and therefore belongs to the new buyer. So, net-net, we were *very* pleased. I would (and have) recommend them to anyone looking to do an estate sale. Pros: - A professional group who knew what they were doing and were efficient and effective. - They were set up to take credit cards, which helps sell the higher priced items. - They spent a lot of time working in the basement to prepare for the sale. I was surprised just how much work they did there. - I liked all the people I met. All were friendly and easy to talk to. - Tana does a very good job accounting for every sale, producing a spreadsheet at the end that tabulates every item sold. My husband and I recently hired ConsignWorks to sell items in our home as we are downsizing to a condominium. We found the owner Tana and her team to be extremely professional and very knowledgable about how to run a moving sale. Several days prior to the sale, Tana and her team took all of our items for sale which included furniture, appliances, clothing, china, sporting equipment, etc and turned our home into a store. They also took care of promoting the sale through newspapers and by placing signs around our neighborhood. On the day of the sale Tana and her staff of 6 managed the crowds flawlessly. They were available to assist buyers in moving heavy items that were purchased to their cars. This liquidation was very special to us for another reason....this was a fundraiser with all proceeds going to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Being a breast cancer survivor, it was our wish to donate what were our heartfelt memories to a cause for the cure that could help others survive. Debra visited and promised she would take care of everything, and she did, from selling expensive collector items to half-used cosmetics. I absolutely LOVE Consignworks!!!! I started to follow Consignworks around October of 2010. I saw their ad in the Boston Globe for an estate sale and I thought I would give it a try. When I arrived I was greeted by each of the Consignworks employees in a very friendly and no-pressure-to-buy manner. That day I remember picking up a number of items at such excellent prices, that I went back the following day for some more bargains. Since that time I have continued to seek them out and I have found their sales to be very fun and exciting as Tana and her team make shopping a very fun experience! Tana, the head of Consignworks, does a very good job of managing often times large amounts of people who are all intent on entering the estate sale at the same time. They have a very good system of a sign up sheet at 730AM the morning of the sale and allowing only a certain amount of people in at a time. This is excellent, and allows buyers to see the available items for sale without the feeling of being in a crowded place. As for this negative review (below) - I would like to comment on this. I was there. This reviewer has quite an imagination, he should possibly consider a career as a writer of fiction. With this type of review, you should remember the phrase 'consider the source'. This person arrived at an estate sale with a dog in tow? Are you kidding me? Then was 'shocked' when there wasn't a sign posted against having pets on the property further down the driveway. Really? I have 2 dogs that I love dearly, however I do not take them with me EVERYWHERE i go. I would like to state some of the OBVIOUS reasons why one wouldn't bring a dog to an estate sale: 1) it is very busy at these sales with many different types of people, some of which are afraid of dogs 2) what makes you think that the owner (or future owner) of the property you are visiting wants dog hairs all over their house? 3) how is it fair to your dog to bring him/her into a crowded house of people and just shop? 4) If you leave your dog outside of the house, who do you leave him/her with? Does that person have to stay there and watch your dog while you shop? What if the dog 'relieves' himself/herself on the property - who cleans that up? Your friend watching the dog? Let's keep it simple - just so you are not constantly looking for signs that ban your dog - try not to bring your dog to the following events:ESTATE SALES, food shopping, clothes shopping, funerals, weddings, open houses, restaurants, etc etc etc - As for Consignworks, I will continue to patronize them and I think they are awesome!! When you go, you will have the benefit of a very knowledgeable staff to help you with any questions about the items and very fair prices. I LOVE Tana and her team - they are the best!!!!!! read more

We are moving 3000 miles away, and we found the moving cost for all of our belongings to be much, much higher than we had anticipated. Therefore, we decided to sell much of our furniture and belongings. I called several firms to which I had been referred, and I am delighted to have chosen Consignworks. Tana explained her plan fully to me on the phone before she came out, and when she visited our house, she was very thorough about explaining the process. She chose a date that was perfect for the sale, did all the advertising, put up signs on the day of the sale, and was professional in every sense of the word. She came to the house a few days ahead of time to "stage" and price the furniture and other things. On the day of the sale, she arrived early to make sure that everything was prepared. She had 7-8 associates with her to ensure that all went smoothly. She set up a cashier at a table in the hall and had people all through the house to be sure that visitors could be helped if they had questions. We left the house soon after she arrived and returned once everyone had left. The house was spotless. Tana sold a great deal of what we had for sale. One bedroom set did not sell, and Tana offered to take it in her consignment shop to sell. She expects to get a good price for it. I have never done this before, and Tana was great! read more

Best move we could have made! We contracted with Consignworks for our downsizing sale in December, 2014. We had a large Victorian estate, with a 5,500 square foot home and 3000 square foot carriage house. It was a lot of house to furnish, and it meant it was a lot of house to downsize. I researched estate sale companies and found Consignworks and its web site. I connected with the owner, Deidra, and she came out to take a look, explain the process, etc. From the minute we met her, my wife and I felt very comfortable with Deidra. She is realistic, direct, humorous and engaging, and she really knows her stuff. We walked through the entire house and all three floors of the carriage house and she took some photos of specialty items so she could do some additional research. Once we signed on, the process was amazing. A team of Consignworks staffers arrived like clockwork (despite icy road conditions that day) early in the week of the sale. They were a pleasant and fun bunch -- my wife and I spent a lot of time in the house with them that week, and they were fantastic. They organized and reorganized everything, staged it all, and priced it out over the next several days. Here's an example of how efficiently they work: they took all of the drapes, measured each pair, folded them neatly by pair, taped them with blue painter's tape by pair, and then marked the length and width on the blue tape. They had one room staged for all the linens, one for any clothing items (including my wife's shoes and handbags), the glassware was all laid out precisely on our built-in buffet cabinets. Everything was made to be readily accessible by the buyers. Their team used iPads to research pricing for items they were unsure of, so that by the time Saturday morning rolled around, we were comfortable that the stuff would sell and we'd get a fair return. Consignworks advertised the sale, including more than 100 photos of various items and a description of the sale. They have a mailing list of more than 4000 people who received it, in addition to advertising in local and state-wide newspapers, etc. Early in the morning of the day of the sale, there were buyers waiting on my front porch at 6:30 am to get their numbers to be the first through the doors at 9 am. We knew then we'd sell a lot that day. On the day of the sale, the team arrived, this time augmented by strong movers, who were ready to dismantle furniture, roll up rugs, etc., and carry it to the buyers' vehicles. We spent the day moving into our new place, and arrived back just as the sale was winding up at 4 pm. The house looked completely different than it had that morning. Our dining room table was coming out the door as we were walking in. The rugs (we had dozens) were all gone. The countertops in our kitchen -- which earlier in the day had dozens of items on them -- were nearly cleared of things. So much was gone -- it was truly amazing. Consignworks got a nice return on their time, and we got a big fat check following the sale. We got rid of tons of items we didn't want/couldn't use/didn't need in our downsized new space, and they sent a detailed, itemized list so we could see what sold and at what price. Simply put, without Consignworks, we would have been screwed. They sold more than 1100 items in one day (the actual number is much higher as many were sold in lots of 10 or 12, etc.). I could have had yard sale after yard sale and used Craigslist for months on end, but would never had been able to rid the house of so much in just one day. Having bought a number of items at an estate sale run by Consign Works, I came home and noticed that one of the bowls was personalized. Although the company has a clear 'no returns' policy, I figured that wouldn't apply to obviously unfit for use items, especially those of potential sentimental value to the original owner. Being in the area of the sale in a couple of hours for other reasons, I decided to stop by and try to return the bowl. I was ready for a firm but polite 'no' - after all, it was only $6 - but I was not ready for an attempt to ridicule me in front of a crowd of shoppers - the manager began spouting contempt and derision loudly and with gusto: "blown away", "will pay the measly $6 out of my own pocket". The message was clear: choke on it. I told the manager I was leaving the bowl and departed, seemingly unnoticed by the her as she continued to perform to the crowd with her back turned to me. Evidently anyone can become an "Antique Dealer" these days. I have patronized many Estate Sale Companies over the past 30 years, this group of people are the most arrogant, rude, & unfriendly bunch of people I have ever had to deal with. I would like to share my *very* positive experience with ConsignWorks and their owner, Tana. I needed to sell the contents of a condo apartment. I contacted ConsignWorks to conduct an Estate Sale. Tana called me back and agreed to hold the sale. However, she asked me first to verify that the condo association allowed a sale, something I hadn't considered. Unfortunately, the condo association had a firm policy not to allow open house events, which only left me the option of selling by advertising and appointments. My main problem was that I had no idea of the worth of the contents and how much to ask. I called Tana and told her the bad news, but asked her if she would be willing to come to the apartment, for a fee, and help me appraise the pieces. She told me that she was leaving for Florida the next day and did not have the time to make a visit. Instead, she suggested that I take pictures and send them to her. She would try to appraise them that way. I took more than 30 pictures and sent them to her. She responded quickly, and spent a long time on the phone with me, going over the pictures and appraising them. I was impressed by her knowledge, identifying many brands and makes from the pictures, giving me low to high estimates and recommending asking prices. When I asked her for her fee she refused to charge anything, despite my repeated offers to pay. She told me that she just enjoys this kind of work and does not feel that she should charge as long as she did not conduct the sale. What an unusual kindness from a professional! Although never really impressed by their Estate Sales, and they one time sold a bowl to us that was misrepresented as a Waterford Crystal. We continued attending their Estate Sales that is until the I met Deidra one of the founders who was extremely rude to my family. I can only wish her the very best. Very beautiful store but then came across a piece that was in my sale. Was not happy to find out that they buy the furniture from there sales and sell them at a much higher price in store. read more

We sold our house in 12 days and were not taking the furniture to the west coast. A local real estate agent gave us Consignworks # but had no information about the company. We called and spoke to Tana and within minutes we were hoping she would work with us. Her professionalism and her hand holding...when necessary...was really appreciated. Her team did all the work, we only had to tell them what we wanted to keep and they tagged and logged every item. They were accountable for every aspect of the sale. They advertised heavily in the Boston papers, online and through their own list of clients. We had a fabulous turnout and by midday 75% was sold. They were happy to tag items sold and work with customers to arrange pick up times and were there to assist with that as well. The entire family was very happy to have Consignworks handle our estate sale. They were very aware that they were selling our home furnishings not just things.
