I am a 33 year old male with no adverse medical history. I was referred to Dr. Coniglio by my Orthodontist whom recommended consolation for potential tongue thrust. Though the orthodontist indicated that it was unlikely, he wanted me to get a second opinion regarding the potential need for a glossectomy from the "specialist". The Head and Neck Center indicated that they would be interested is setting up an appointment regarding the matter. My experiences with Dr. Coniglio and his staff were that he was unknowledgeable of the condition, dishonest in his billing practices, unprofessional in his referral methods, arrogant in his recommendations, and then later spiteful in his attempts to collect funds not owed by me as his patient.
Office visit occurred on August 22, 2017, with about 25 minute's total time in the doctor's office with under 10 minutes total time in direct contact with Dr. Coniglio. His initial response to my inquiries were that he had no experience with tongue thrust at all. He looked down my through, made some rudimentary examinations, and indicated that he didn't think surgery would be a good option and that my speech was fine. He indicated that he may speak to another doctor regarding the matter and call me at a later time.
On August 31, 2017, Dr. Coniglio called back indicating that he recommended that I speak to a speech pathologist. The response did not make sense to me as a patient and was different than what he indicated during our face to face consultation. I was contacted by his speech pathologist on September 13, 2017 via referral but did not follow up because there would be no medical benefit. Allowing for another doctor to call me was unprofessional of him and done without my permission.
When I was billed by Dr. Coniglio I was billed for a service rather than for a consultation. The difference would disallow contribution from my insurer for the visit because it was treated as a surgery and the total was under my deductible and left me with 100% of costs. Copayment was clarified with the office PRIOR to the visit that the visit was a consultation should have cost $30 which is what I paid up front. This was fought for several months and was reprocessed several times by the insurer and was ultimately not going to be covered due to the doctor office coding. The dispute involved multiples phone calls between Dr. Coniglio's billing specialist Jenny, my insurer, and myself. I have found correspondence with Jenny to be always rude both to myself and also her dealings with the insurance company during three way calls. Despite the fact that the insurer was willing to reprocess the codes, Dr. Coniglio's office refused to do so despite the fact that there would be minimal financial difference to the office. The billing office screens every single call and always returns calls after you reach out to them likely because billing issues occur rampantly within the office.
Dr. Coniglio himself called me twice in one day at work on January 13, 2018 after I indicated that the New York State Insurance Commissioner and State Attorney General would be contacted. He indicated that the status of limitations had passed to revise the code and indicated that the burden was on me (despite the same day indication that my insurer would reprocess it). His exact words were that it wasn't a lot of money and that I should be able to pay it out of pocket anyways based upon what I do (as a CPA). John's final words on the phone were that I should expect extra mail because he was going to take me to collections.
The lack of professionalism and medical expertise of both Dr. Coniglio and his staff were inexcusable. I have found Dr. Coniglio to be both arrogant and incompetent in his own line of work at the same time. Personal phone calls from him were vindictive and unprofessional. I perceived his referral to the speech pathologist as a misguided attempt to network rather than treat a problem. My visit and subsequent dealings with Dr. Coniglio were a waste of time and I would recommend avoiding his practice. read more
