There is a preservation effort ongoing. The road is mostly paved (and the Yelp map marker inaccurate; I've tried to fix it), but the last turn takes one on to a dirt road where all there is to do is park at the gate. Ropes surround the ruins, but a circumnavigation still offers plenty of photo opportunities. The entire concept of a "chapel of ease" and the history of the place make for interesting reading. Curious travelers will find the Sheldon Church which is not that far away to be a more substantial visit, but these are likely among many that are worth saving and worth visiting.

I remember driving past this home the for the first time and audibly gasping! My partner thought I was choking at first, I was so excited. This building has so much character and patina! The 200 year old structure was originally built as a summer home for Richard Bedon in 1820, and has had a long history of owners and misfortunes over the years. It was significantly damaged by Hurricane Gracie in 1959, and laid dormant for over 40 years until the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation obtained ownership in 1996. The building is an example of the elevated "high houses" that are built in low country along the South Carolina coast. Notice how many steps lead to the front porch. The hope is this added elevation helps prevent the homes from being flooded. Indeed, the original heart pine flooring was able to be preserved after all of these years! This home is just oozing with historic charm and I hope readers will have an opportunity to visit one day. Please add more photos to this listing if you do!

On the front, "Colleton County Courthouse. The original section of this courthouse, completed in 1822 after the county seat moved to Walterborough from Jacksonborough, was built by contractor William Thompson. The front portico is attributed to Robert Mills, who completed an unfinished design by William Jay. The courthouse was in such poor condition within a few years, however, that it was extensively renovated in 1843-44." On the reverse, "Colleton County Courthouse. This courthouse, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, is built of brick covered in stucco to imitate stone. It was enlarged in 1916 by a frame wing on the west elevation. In 1937-39 a project of the Works Progress Administration covered the west wing with brick, built a new brick wing on the east elevation and an addition on the north entrance, and remodeled the interior. Erected by the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society, 2001" Walterboro is the county seat of Colleton County, which is named after Sir John Colleton, 1st Baronet, one of the eight Lords Proprietor of the Province of Carolina. In 1682, Colleton was created as one of the three original proprietary counties, located in the southwestern coastal portion of the new South Carolina Colony and bordering on the Combahee River. This is one of those places that you would probably miss, but I am thankful that I didn't. What a beautiful tribute to these distinguished young men of courage and valor known as the Tuskeegee Airmen. Situated off the beaten path in a small South Carolina town called Walterboro (across from the regional Lowcountry airport). The memorial park is such a lovely, tranquil place. I could envision sitting out there with a good book or taking a moment for reflection. It's not a large memorial area, which to me, was perfect. Its purpose is well accomplished, as it is full of history. Red Tails was already a favorite movie of mine. Thanks to Disney+, I was able to watch it again and appreciate these mighty men all the more. If by chance you happen to be in or pass through Walterboro, SC please make a point to stop, honor, and educate yourself about these fearless men who truly deserve their flowers.

The Tuskegee Airman memorial is a beautiful tribute located next to a small airstrip. It has…read moreinformational plaques so you can read all about these brave African American aviators. They have picnic tables to have lunch on and if you need to use the restroom the airport is right there. I love finding little gems like this and catch up on history that black people helped create. Even though it's only a small snippet of what these men achieved it gave me a sense of pride to be there.
