picture of Tim in the VA hospital after septic-UTI-kidney stone surgery.

Thursday, July 22, 2022 - I'm a 70 year old disabled veteran and stroke survivor. I somehow (after exercising on July 14) injured something that caused pain that extends from my lower back to my right thigh. The pain levels toggle between 7 and 10 when I stand or walk and 4-7 when I'm in bed. I called yesterday to verify they accept veterans and also checked to see if they accepted walk-ins, the answer to both was yes. However, when I went there today, 2:00PM (they close @ 5), the receptionist 1st asked what type of insurance I had and then the reason for my visit, after telling her she said she needed to see if they are accepting walk-ins today, returned a few minutes later to tell me they weren't. I've called three times but no one answers. This is not a very professional establishment. I wonder if they would have treated me if I had better insurance like Prudential instead of the VA's TriWest or if I would pay cash. Monday, August 1, 2022 - Update: On the following day, July 23, I had to go to the VA Emergency Department where they diagnosed me with 3 kidney stones and an Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). They admitted me (that day) and rushed me into surgery the next morning, apparently they discovered that I was septic: the CDC says "Infections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death." https://www.cdc.gov/sepsis/what-is-sepsis.html Thank God the VA was accepting walk-ins, I was their patient from July 23-29, 2022. Shame on you Concentra, who ever heard of an Urgent Care that does not accept walk-ins, what do you have to say about this, I could have died?

Even the doctor allowed a 15-minute grace period, which made visits stress-free. Because of that positive first experience, I chose to return here after my recent rotator cuff surgery. Unfortunately, my experience this time was completely different. The new front office receptionist is very rude, unfriendly, and unprofessional. She was visibly bothered that she had to get up to ask the physician if he could still see me, even though I arrived within what used to be a 15-minute grace period. I was then informed that the policy has changed to 10 minutes, with no flexibility. Considering I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and it's difficult for me to get dressed and drive, I was hoping for a little understanding -- instead, I was turned away and had to drive back home. I made another appointment, but it was booked far out. I'm giving this place one more chance, but if things continue this way, I will not return. It's disappointing to see how drastically the office atmosphere and professionalism have changed. The front office sets the tone for the entire clinic -- and when that declines, it raises concerns about the rest of the care behind the scenes. Patients come here trusting they'll be treated with professionalism, respect, and compassion. I hope management looks into this, because the difference between my past and current experience is truly unfortunate.

The error was only discovered because I specifically asked to review his medication list myself. When I questioned the staff, I was told the hospital had provided the incorrect dosage. After reviewing the records, I concluded that explanation was not accurate. Rather than taking accountability, I felt the responsibility was shifted elsewhere. What concerned me even more was the pressure I felt to sign an arbitration agreement that would limit my ability to bring legal claims. Between the medication error, the lack of accountability, and that experience, I have serious concerns about the quality of care and transparency at this facility. Families should carefully review their loved one's medications and ask questions.
