Like everything in Italy, the most simple things are usually the best. We told the person at the counter that we just wanted to "try" so he recommended we just get the 4 most popular toppings. I wouldnt necessarily say that it was a must have but the wife and i are foodies so we loved the idea of having something that was specific to the region and not something that we would find say like in Milan.

I have fond memories of this place from when I used to live in Modena and couldn't believe my luck that I had stumbled across a largely unknown (at least I had never heard of it) but very traditional local speciality: the crescentina. In the local language (Modenesi) it is known as Chersenta, hence the name of the establishment and it is basically a traditional sandwich. The bread, the star of the show, is traditionally made in "tigelle" (circular terracotta discs lined with chestnut leaves), although nowadays they have a special device that mimics the traditional method. Traditionally this bread and opened (like a pita bread) and filled with Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and slathered with Pesto alla Modenese (also known as Cunza) which is a garlic and rosemary flavoured pork lard. Nowadays, however, there is a wide range of ingredients you can stuff the bread with. My usual used to be Italian cured ham, cremino piccante (a type of spicy soft cheese), artichokes and mushrooms. So simple yet so satisfying. If you are not in the mood for savoury, you can get one filled with Nutella or other sweet ingredients instead. If you are in the area, this is a must as it's close to the main square and right next to the Mercato Albinelli (Local Covered Market). Every time I went to the market, I would come here for lunch or snack.

I opted for a vegan one with hummus and found it delightful. Could be a bit more full but overall it was great for a lunch. Fast service too. And a fair price. The have some natural sodas and what not too. We got a few flavors. Nice employees and tons of seating.

Behold the flatbread sandwich, Italian style…read more La Piadineria specializes in a variety of flatbread sandwiches filled with cheese, vegetables, and/or meat. I didn't know which one to pick so I got one of the most basic ones: La Leggenda (crudo, squacquerone, rucola). Nonetheless, each and every one of the varieties sounded delicious with incredibly fresh ingredients. My crudo was thinly sliced and flavorful. The squacquerone was soft and the rucola was a hefty handful, sharp and peppery. The overall product was perfectly balanced in textures and flavor. Think of the piadine like a pizza folded in half, a half moon tortilla, or two oversized crispy wafers blanketing salty ham and melted cheese. The result is bigger than your face and large enough to feed two people. La Piadineria was definitely the right place for an authentic snack and quick bite, as we were looking for something not targeted to tourists. The piadineria was spacious and clean. It is a casual setting where you order from the counter and bring the food back to your seat. Basically, it's a fast food chain. We had gone late in the afternoon and there was only one worker there and two other customers. It was quiet and a nice change of pace after filtering through the crowds of Piazza delle Erbe. The piadines are inexpensive ranging in cost from about 3 to 5 euros. Drinks are at most 2 euro, including beer.
