I was really concerned about fulfilling this need, more so than price. I was steered towards M P Healthcare Medical Supply as they were the closest place that might be able to help me.
Bethany was extremely helpful on the phone. She was very thorough and checked into all my needs and spent a great deal of time on the phone with me. By the time we got off the phone I was certain of two of my purchases. She even had them pulled up front for me.
Now finding this place was a bit of a nightmare. They do not have a sign at the top of the business, so I didn't trust GPS at first. In any case, the second time we tried, we pulled into the shopping center and finally found them all the way in the corner.
I was also told that sometimes GPS will send people down to the Uhaul. I really think they need a large sign on the building or a sign on the side of the road.
You need to call or knock to get the door unlocked. Upon entering, I saw a small amount of stock and also some retail items. However, as we consulted over additional options and features, I learned most of their stock was in the back.
I had done some research and had a particular model in mind for the wheelchair, but they didn't have that one because the manufacturer tends to take a few days to send them out. However, Bethany took the most important criteria from my list and found a great substitute.
My father in law had been released from the hospital the previous night and the current wheelchair was not safe. In my opinion, the wheels and brakes were a safety hazard and it was going to collapse eventually. When you are immobile, you cannot risk further injury. We couldn't leave town without knowing that we had a sturdy and safe option to leave my in laws with.
Since this was an urgent matter, she went through her current stock and found me a Medline with a 300 lb capacity, fully assembled, with swing out foot rests that fit my dimension requirements. The chair was a great option and my in laws were very happy with it. I thought $175 to get a chair that met our needs immediately was a great deal.
My husband was hoping for a larger selection and heavy duty items. Though this would have been nice, it is important to mention that they can order these items too. Also, we were looking for a wheelchair, but transport chairs are stronger, if that's what you are needing.
The other thing I needed was a slim walker as the current walkers at the house didn't fit through the bathroom door. While measuring doors, Bethany was able to tell me they had one walker that fit the necessary dimensions. We spoke at length about the feet of the walker and height and it was a very reasonable price at $30.
My father in law is very tall and finding one that reached his waist was easier than I thought it would be. This particular one didn't have wheels as the ones at the house already did, and this had to serve a very specific purpose later in his recovery. If you are getting a rollator, those are closer to $100.
While there, my husband found a bedside commode that is a short term necessity at the moment. This was going to save a lot of back breaking work and was a good deal at $75. It can be used over a toilet, or as a standalone and was very sanitary. It's also very strong, I did some old school gymnastics bar work to test it out and I couldn't tip it, so I was satisfied with our purchase.
If you want to buy same day, make it there by 4:30pm. Unfortunately, they are open only on weekdays and not on weekends. They do offer delivery if you want to handle it over the phone. Though I didn't have a chance to check it out, they also have a website with the option to order online and I bet that opens up possibilities.
They have a 7 day return option on most products, though of course not bathroom products. They can also order additional items, such as alternative foot rests with pads. She wrote the model number on the receipt in case they were needed in the future. Very thoughtful.
It can suck to need medical supplies, but when you do, you need someone knowledgeable and thorough. I left $280 lighter, but with a huge sense of relief and peace of mind. This was half the cost I was expecting to pay for getting a weight capacity wheelchair the same day, and I left with a cargo area full of medical supplies.
This place came through during a very difficult and stressful time. If I have any similar needs in the future, I am happy to give them my business! Thank you Bethany and M P Healthcare!
