Jennifer is a miracle worker. Vader is an almost 18 month old Newfie who weights close to 170 lbs. He is naturally a really sweet and pretty well behaved dog but we were having a huge issue with pulling during walks. My husband could manage him pretty well but I didn't feel comfortable walking him on my own as he would go crazy when he saw other dogs, trying to rush over and play, and it took every ounce of my strength to restrain him. We sought out Jennifer about a month ago when our Akita puppy Basil was about 4 months old. While he had basic commands down, he was having trouble controlling himself when he got excited. He was beginning to ignore our commands and had a few bad habits we wanted to break (pulling on the leash, jumping, excessive licking, mouthing/nipping). I met Jennifer by chance - she was sitting outside Starbucks with her two pups and of course, being the dog lover that I am, I stopped to visit. Suffice to say, best stopping and petting dogs that has ever happened to me. I have a gorgeous, reasonably well behaved, loving yellow Lab who has always been dog reactive/dog aggressive. We had spent thousands of dollars on him with obedience training and having a very well regarded trainer work with him on the aggression. Nothing helped, and while he is most often safely hanging out in our fenced back yard, it was worrisome. I bring him back to my home in Northern Wisconsin which doesn't have fencing and it has always concerned me, in addition to my having to be keenly watchful of him and other dogs. Two sessions with Jennifer and Cooper is an entirely different dog. It's probably more accurate to say that we are entirely different leaders, but you get my drift. She brought one or both of her dogs to each session, and in the past, I would never (!) have introduced them to Cooper. It's rare that I feel impelled to post a review on Yelp -- an experience really needs to be remarkably good or undeniably bad. Unfortunately, my training experience with Jennifer at Complete Dog Obedience was the latter. It was bad. It was insulting. It was, in the words of my teenage son, annoying. And to think one must pay good money for this! Let's start there - with the payment. I was told over the phone that the cost was $100 for a session but at the end of the training, I was told it was $110 if I paid by Venmo vs. cash. Add to this that she sold me an overpriced collar ($25 for me, whereas I see others who have reviewed CDO were charged less!). I declined the inflated priced e-collar (I already have one and Jennifer kept insisting that her high priced collar is much better. A shock is a shock!) and the leather leash (which failed during the training session). I guess I can start with the e-collar. I have a doodle. A sweet doodle. Seems a little unreasonable to me to be using an e-collar right off the bat to get the pup to turn this way or that way. My doggo was jumping off the ground from the shocks, errr stimulation. Okay, but I'm not a dog trainer so what do I know? There's more than way to skin a cat, right? If you're interested in learning to be militant, rough, harsh, etc when training your pup, then Jennifer's tactics may work for you. The worst part though for me (and my son) was how insulting, gruff, rough, abrasive, and annoying she was to work with. I guess if I was dropping my dog off and didn't have to be bossed around and criticized it might be okay - though I still might worry about my dog's experience. Speaking of, Jennifer's rate for board and training is $200 a night. This seems to be a MUCH BETTER deal than $110 for an hour of training. I am so happy that other people have found so much success working with Jennifer. I, however, found her training tactics borderline abusive and her business practices shady. This review is long overdue. I reached out to Jennifer when I moved back to the Bay Area with my dog. I was a student so cash supply was limited and she was an affordable dog trainer with great reviews. I decided to give her a go. She never asked much about my dog's history or what the exact problems were but I didn't think too much of it. First training session/ consultation I met at her place. She had me run up and down the streets with my dog in tow. While this was happening Jennifer commented on how she was much older than I am and in apparent better shape since I was getting winded. Odd comment to make, but I brushed it off. At the end of the session, she had me pay for the slip collar she let us use. It was never a question of would you like to use this tool or I highly recommend using this instead of what you are currently using- she just said oh and the collar is $15. She also said my leather leash wasn't adequate enough and handed me a chewed up leather leash and charged me $30 for that. She then proceeded to tell me that since she is a trainer, she gets a deal on e-collars and that I should go through her to purchase one. Later, when I went to the e-collar website, I noticed that they were selling them for cheaper than what she charged me... The second training session was the icing on the cake. Jennifer wanted me to get my dog to jump on top of a rock. Seems simple enough. When my dog didn't want to jump on the rock she had me pull her 35lb body up by the leash and collar basically strangling her. She had me continue to do this until my dog did it on her own. When I hesitated, Jennifer stepped in to do it herself. Jennifer asked if she could take a video of me having my dog jump over these concrete hurdles at the park. I said okay. As she was taking the video I heard her saying thing like "this dog is aggressive and has bit people before." Let me make this very clear, my dog has NEVER bit anyone or anything. She is NOT aggressive. I came to Jennifer because my dog was leash reactive not aggressive. My dog is actually incredibly dog social. All in all, my experience was very poor. I took my time and money elsewhere. I found a trainer who was more expensive but really took the time to learn about my dog's behavior issues, did in home training sessions, and used a balanced method. When i first called to get some information, Jennifer sounded hestitante with me and like she is trying to check me out. When I asked for price she told me 105 for one hr and that it's "non refundable". The part of her saying non refundable when she is trying to sell me a service got me very wary but I decided to give it a go since she seems to be the only dog trainer in Alameda where I live. All in all she I'm sure she is a professional and into this buisness for a long time (maybe too much) but I gotta say I was not impressed with her human relations, she barely asked me anything about the dog (GSD mix) and just told me how much i was doing wrong so far with training him without really asking how do i train him and i how do i treat him. The worst part was the end where she litteraly told me i gotta have this leather leash and collar for 40$+10$ and lets say after the dog bit the leash i discovered its far from real leather. Jennifer's help with Mackenzie has been wonderful. From when I brought her home as a pup until today (she turned 3 in February) Jennifer's advice has helped both "Mack" and I. Just one of the thing she helped me with was when I first brought her home I was having a hard time getting her to put on her harness. Jennifer recommended that I make it fun for her. Now I have no problem putting on her harness, and Mack even helps me. For every issue we have, Jennifer has a solution. Jennifer is a great trainer. Ruby has worked with her off and on for the past 6 months, and learned so much (obedience, agility, etc.) Ruby definitely likes to take her time on walks, sniffing every leaf or blade of grass (unless she is with other dogs, then she walks great). Then, Ruby spent a day with Jennifer this week and - wow! When I took her out on an evening walk - she just walked quickly right by my side - she was on a mission! I've also seen Jennifer's work with friends' and neighbors' dogs, with all different training challenges and can say she has done an excellent job. Highly recommended. read more
