I had dinner with a friend in Dayton the other night. He was craving Mexican and since there isn't a good sushi spot here, we decided to come to Los Compadres. I've been to the other Mexican restaurants in town. There aren't too many dining options here without having to head into Carson, but options are decent. (Iykyk). We walked in and it was fairly busy. There were only two tables open and one for two off to the side near a window where we were seated promptly. The same girl that seated us offered drinks, chips and salsa. We were starving and snacking on the chips and salsa while looking over their menu. We decided that we were both hungry enough to order their super sampler to share as an appetizer. I ordered their empanada and chile relleno and my friend and my friend ordered a dos plato. Our food was served hot. We enjoyed our dinner and left with plenty of leftovers. I'd come back. We have been eating at this place for over twenty years and it has been good. So we went for dinner recently and noticed the new menu with increased prices, no big deal a few dollars more for a meal. So I'm looking at the bill and noticed they charged $9 for a single bottle of beer. Excessive to say the least. The restaurant was clean and organized. There is music playing softly in the background. The staff is friendly and attentive. To start the meal I had the bean dip. The bean dip was flavorful and complex in flavors. To drink, I did the strawberry margaritas. These were well balanced and refreshing. To eat, I had 2 ground beef tacos and a fish taco. The ground beef tacos were good but slightly dry and could have used a bit more seasoning. The fish taco was good but slightly spicy with them using a different sauce on top. This cute little Mexican restaurant is tucked away on historic Pike Street in Dayton. The front entrance was so inviting with a small courtyard and flowers at the entrance. When we walked in it was such a cozy atmosphere and we were greeted with a friendly welcome from the hostess. The service was quick and the food was hearty. Chips and salsa were complimentary. We ordered fish tacos and the chile relleno and empanada plates both served alongside beans and rice. The food was delicious and satisfying. This hidden gem is a place I will NOT forget! It's always the small, hole in the wall places that have THE BEST food. Service was awesome but the food! Omg we had a chilli rellano, Carne asada tacos and a tamale on the side. Get.the. Tamales! Or the rellanos. The house made green sauce on the delicious pork rellano was to die for, but then my friend made me try the tamale and I think I died and went to tamale heaven. I drove back from Stagecoach to Dayton and I asked for them to show me where the Chile Relleno (a stuffed pepper) was mashed into a enchilada. As the waitress tears apart the meal to show me the tiniest stuffed pepper, another waitress cracks a smile and sarcastically says "So we'll see you again?" Menu price showed $14.50 charged $18 in store. No flavor. Asked for NO ONIONS, we have an allergy. On a cheese enchilada? Shouldn't be an issue. Oh, but we got a shredded beef enchilada. TWICE. After we went back and said this is wrong, 15 minute drive, they made the enchilada wrong again. It's for a kid who doesn't eat meat. Sorry we ordered cheese and you can't accommodate. We also ordered a Chile relleno....they shoved it under the enchilada and it's so small, you can't even tell. Ordered a la carte no beans no rice....twice they got that wrong. Cheese quesadilla? Online $8.25 what we were charged? $9.60 Chicken quesadilla? Online $11.25 what we were charged? $15 POST YOUR PRICES CORRECTLY!! You charged $6 for a to go order that we picked up AND came back again to get it fixed!!! My family and I came here during Dayton Valley Days and it was super crowded. We had made a reservation and our table was ready for us upon arrival. Service was a little slow; it was a full house with only two servers. Three of us ordered Cadillac margaritas and they were STRONG. Too strong in my opinion, which made it hard to enjoy. I ordered the chili Colorado and while it was absolutely delicious, it was not traditional chili Colorado (see photo). That was kind of disappointing and something to be aware of. Update: We've returned twice since my initial review and I can say unequivocally that this has become my family's favorite Mexican restaurant! I added the 5th star from my initial 4 star review because it's that good and our waitress Laura, whom we've had the past two times is fantastic. She's very friendly and even past the mask she has a smile. She's on top of everything....drinks, food, chips, service, all in all she makes you feel like your at a friends house for dinner. I can't begin to tell you how amazing the Carne Asada is. This past two times we've gone Ive ordered the Tres Plato with Carne Asada Enchilada, Chili Rellano, Carne Asada Taco and this time, the third time, I ordered the Tamale and OMG are they all fantastic. Best tamale I've had. I typically don't get them because their saliva-sucking-dry but in "taking one for the yelp review" I ordered it and I was pleasantly surprised and would order again and again. The pork was fantastic, very flavorful. The Mesa wasn't dry in the least and the addition of red sauce on top was perfect. The Chili Rellano was perfecto. (To me, if you can't get two things right in a Mexican restaurant then you then ya might want to think of something else.....those two things are the Rellano and yep, the retried beans) the Rellano is perfectly breaded..not too much egg coating at all; the pepper is delicious and very satisfying to the tastebuds, the amount of cheese is perfect and the sauce was not to thick or thin. Again perfect! I regards to the Enchilada...I NEVER...I'll repeat it...I NEVER get Enchiladas because frankly they're bland and I can make them better. But having these and the fact that I've ordered the enchilada twice now says a lot. I crave these darn things now! Compadres has ruined me to the fact that I can't compete with theirs :) Now for the beans...they aren't out of a can as far as I can tell because they are slightly different each time we go and taste very homemade and excellent each time. I typically leave them in my plate...but not here I don't. Even the rice is great, another item that typically remains in my plate. All is gone, nothing wasted. My husband gets the Chili Colorado Burrito and loves it. Gobbles it down so fast I can't get a bite to give my own review..lol My boys are hooked on the Nachos. Been excited about going here since we moved to the area a few months ago. The 4 of us arrived early (about 4:30 pm) without reservations, and were told there were no seats available. But the kicker was that there were only 2 patrons there. It's a very tiny space with about 8 tables. So as we turned around to go, the hostess/server came to us and said if we could eat quickly and be out of there by 5:45, we could stay. We stayed and ordered our meals. The plates arrived stacked with food, but not one of us really liked what we ordered. It wasn't bad but it wasn't yummy either. Just so-so. We kept to our bargain and left before 5:45, but on our way out we noted that there were only two other tables with customers there. Just didn't feel welcome there and the food was mediocre. We're going to try a different Mexican restaurant next time. read more

The food was definitely good and quality but not spicy at all. No problem, just ask for hot sauce,(none on the table). The staff and the ambience was outstanding! service was absolutely terrible. the server was very rude, didn't give us the time of day, made faces about my husband asking for water when the salsa was so spicy he needed it. it was a whole different story when two men came in. she was friendly and upbeat to them. she couldn't give them good service fast enough. when my husband asked for water again she went off on him. I told her she could be a little nicer and that we were thinking of leaving. she told us to go ahead. since when do restaurants treat their customers this way. when Jo worked there we were always treated with respect and friendliness. in addition, their prices have gone way up including their lunch specials and they charge extra for more chips. since we were told to leave we didn't get to taste the food so we don't know if it's still good. we definitely won't be going back there. read more
