Community Boating is a fixture in the Boston skyline. Any photo collection of Boston needs to have a few images of their sailboats on the Charles river. I have been a member, off and on, for many decades. The program, primarily for underprivileged city kids, has been a positive force in the community. It is a happy side effect that adults can come down after work and on the weekends and use the facilities. For those that want to learn. there is a great deal to find here. Sailing, as a spectator sport, takes on new meaning on a blustery day. If you are a complete rookie or someone who thought you knew how to sail (on open water) there is a lot to find (e.g. the buildings in the area create all sorts of interesting wind patterns). And there are amazing people about, who all have interesting stories of their own. As one of the first such programs and likely the oldest and most recognized, they can clam to be progenitors of these kinds of programs. Absolutely great place. I've been sailing a long time and it has been a great place to continue sailing. With all their classes I think it would also be a great place to learn to sail. It offers so much at such a low price that if you're at all interested in sailing, kayaking, wind surfing, or paddleboarding, you should come here to learn and practice. If I had one suggestion to improve, it would be to make it easier for experienced sailors to be certified on many of the boats. Especially after you filter people out with a verbal or written test, there really isn't that much risk sending somebody out in a laser on a yellow flag day for their first test. Or have them sail with an instructor to get a more in-depth view of their sailing ability. Overall though, I really enjoy Community Boating and it is a great asset to Boston. Thanks! read more

How can you beat a place that's in the heart of Boston, charges only $250 for a full year that includes FREE unlimited rentals and lessons for 1) Sailing 2) Windsurfing 3) Kayaking They have a great program for kids wherein an annual membership is only $1!!! I live and work near Kendall Sq. so after work I hop on my bike and head to kayak and sail on many evenings. There's just nothing like it. My friends love to come out with me often. As you can imagine, sailing is a great way to impress a lady! ;) It's mostly volunteer run so the onshore trainers and on-water instructors are regular folks like you and me. When just learning to sail, try to go back often and with different instructors to learn various tips & tricks! You can take 1 guest kayaking with you and up to 3 for sailing on their regular boats. If you're a novice sailor or just a really busy water-sports fan, this should be your go-to program! I was impressed with the laid back atmosphere, but equally as impressed with how devoted all the volunteers are. Best part is, once you're certified you can bring a guest to sail off into that dirty water together, or kayak together through the Charles. It was very easy to sign up and the memberships are completely affordable for either an entire summer or for their shorter memberships (they even ran a great deal with Groupon for a special deal too). The COVID sailing/paddling is fantastic. I feel safer at CBI (lots of distance, everyone masked, everything is thoroughly sanitized) than immediately outside (some masks, people getting close, you know, Boston). Very unhelpful staff! The "day" passes don't start till 3PM and are $45 a person with no option for single hour rental. We stopped by too early, not realizing you couldn't rent till 3, and weren't told till we came back an hour later that we would only be able to rent for the "full day" rather than the hour. I wish I could recommend this place, but I can't. I'm a true beginner at sailing. Never done it before, never really stepped on a sail boat. So I really wanted to learn, and was super excited when I got a membership as a graduation present. It just seemed so lovely, to see the boats on the Charles, and so nice in the summer. Unfortunately, this place isn't good for a TRUE beginner. They basically expect you to go solo in a boat after only two classes (a "shore school" class and a rigging class) with no further instruction and no one-on-one training. I don't know about others, but, for me, this wasn't enough. I was terrified the first time I went out; I literally had no idea what I was doing in the congested Charles waters and nearly ran into one of the bridges. I had a really hard time maneuvering the boat. I went three more times by myself before I gave up. I never got beyond being anxious and scared, and I never enjoyed a minute of it. The kids who work here were no help. (I'm quite confident these are privileged kids who grew up sailing and literally have no idea what it's like to be a grown adult who's never been around sailboats before.) For example, the last time I went, as I was trying to dock my boat, clearly having trouble with the basics of control and steering, one kid yelled out to me to bring the boat in "parallel." When it was clear that I had no idea what I was doing, he yelled, very condescendingly, if I knew what "parallel" meant. (Yeah, kid, I have a PhD and two master's degrees. I know what parallel means. Screw you.) So, yeah, that's the kind of instruction and feedback you can expect: preppy snots talking down to you. I'm sure they're having the summers of their lives, but it's no good for people who don't know how to sail and need genuine help. Overall, I REALLY wanted to like this place. I think their mission is really noble and they do a lot of good for the Boston area. I personally just need more instruction, encouragement, and feedback than they provide in their two beginning classes. I'm giving up and maybe taking up kayaking. I think I'll try to see if I can learn how to sail some other way. :( read more

I've been sailing here for two years now and love it. I started when I moved to Boston as soon as it opened. They have a long season (4/1 - 10/31) and they make the most of it. Prior to joining, I had never sailed before. You take three classes (all of which can be done the first day) and you're able to take out your own boat! If your comfortable with just that, you don't have to test anymore. If you're a bit more adventurous, there's a series of classes and sailing tests (all on the water to test your maneuverability of the boat--no paper and pencil here!) to advance to taking out faster boats. And, they offer informal instruction, where you can sail with other members willing to take you out and show you some techniques. Currently, I'm able to take out the small mercuries in any wind conditions and the large keelboats (Sonars and Rhodes 19s) in light winds. I didn't rush progressing through any of the ratings and am really enjoying working through them. Next week, we're taking a windsurfing class--another benefit of CBI. The other members and staff are really helpful and want you to do well. Most of the classes are volunteer-led by very passionate members, and the advanced classes are offered by staff who offer some really great tips. Sailing at CBI is a great way to enjoy Boston. All in all, it's about the cost of a gym membership (it works out to roughly $50/month), and you get to sail on the Charles enjoying the Boston skyline. What a bummer, CBI. Your dockstaff has turned into a staff of complete jerks. They are terribly rude and condescending, disorganized and unhelpful. Every time my friends and I have a question, we get an attitude. One of them will ask you who told you something, but no one wears nametags or bothers to get to know the members, so of course you don't know any of their names. I do know one name - the dockstaff manager. But don't bother talking to the him (I'm talking about you, Andrew); he's the worst offender. Listen, I understand they have to deal with kids all afternoon, but I am an adult and a paying member. Dealing with the dockstaff makes the whole experience unpleasant for my friends and I. We're just trying to have a good time and sail. read more

This place is just amazing! And the people who work here are awesome too. There is everything for your taste from kayaking to wind surfing! They have classes which are included in the membership so you can learn and practice. Memberships have multiple options you can choose from as per convenience!! I wish I could leave a better review considering this is a non-profit that offers free/discounted programming to the youth of Boston. This review is for the Adult program, which sadly has gone down hill all throughout 2013. This place may be OK if you've never sailed before and don't know any different. But if you're looking to advance your skills spend your money at another place! Here are the problems with Community Boating in 2013: 1) The program works by taking a number of classes and tests to advance to sailing different kinds of boats. Their main boats are Cape Code Mercuries, which are awfully slow to respond and maneuver. After the helmsman test, the next test that is required is the jib test, which requires a red flag (lots of wind). So you get up and go to CBI hoping to take your test, and half the time there is not enough wind. You may even check the wind conditions on their website before you leave your house, but by the time you get to CBI the wind has changed. Throughout the summer of 2013, I attempted to take the Jib test four different times there was a red flag, most of the times with the dock house responding "we aren't giving that test now". The last time there was a red flag, and the employee met me out on the river and set up the course to take the test, and then someone at the dock house changed the flag to yellow. The employee said, oh sorry you can't take your test now. Really? So I spent the summer sailing the same boat I had sailed before, as there was no opportunity to take the test to advance to the next level. 2) The dock house is run by a bunch of teenagers/recent college grads that have very little training. Not only are they not able to handle things like long lines, but they only have a certain number of motor boats to go out on the river to watch sailors, and give classes and tests. I'm scared to think how the staff would handle the situation if an actual emergency were to happen. I've never capsized on the Charles, but if you do, be prepared to wait a long time for someone to come and help you. There is one very kind and helpful man that volunteers there, but he usually does the intro tours and rigging lessons only. The employees look like they don't want to be there, and granted they're probably overworked and underpaid, but are often clueless; they need more training, more structure and leadership, and probably additional employees helping the sailors sail safely. 3) There is a certain employee there with curly brown hair that has a terrible attitude. For example, my friend was tying a knot and he walked up to her, said "you're doing it wrong," and did not offer any help or instruction for how she should be tying the knot. This person talks down to people and really does make the Community Boating experience worse. 4) The duck boats make sailing difficult. The duck boat drivers let little kids steer and they approach way too close to sailboats, who have right of way being under wind power. There is a very tricky entrance and exit from the dock to the river because there is an island in the way. They hover the duck boats over the narrow entrance to the dock, making it difficult to approach or leave the dock. Also, this review is appearing on Yelp, because I asked the front desk where the suggestion box was (which the website refers to), and they had no clue what to do. So just be aware that if you purchase the membership, if you want to advance to sailing a boat beyond a Mercury, you may not be able to. I had recommended CBI to three of my friends who signed up at the beginning of the summer. I felt so awful as they described similar experiences to me. My third year at Community Boating will be my last. read more

I think the staff here is wonderful. Very informative and helpful for people coming to visit for the first time. This review is only for the 4th of July event nearby at the Hatch Shell, I haven't experienced their boating and other services, but I am sure it is great. I really like the people that work here, they were great when I booked our seats for the fireworks event, Ben and Jerry's was fun. Yaaaaargh. Learn to sail without the scurvy. CBI is one of Bostons best entertainment values. The classes are informative and learning to sail (poorly in my case) has been a great time. Get your helmsmen license so you can take visiting friends out on the Charles for something different to do. Don't take your girlfriend out 1 day after getting your helmsman license and almost get dashed against the Longfellow bridge because you aren't that great yet and she is sort of nervous to begin with. The staff is a little impatient but they work hard. The community itself is very welcoming and helpful. Well worth the $200 annual membership. read more

On the Charles you can't be sure of much. The wind is fickle and the weather unpredictable. This might cause worry to some sailing programs, after-all wind is kind-of important for sailing. But, at Community Boating the good times don't depend on the weather. Last summer the weather at CBI was all over the place. We had more than our fair share of sunny days with great wind, where you could watch the Sonars and Rhodes 19s skim from bridge to bridge. But not all of the days can be perfect. There were days without any wind and, the most dreaded of all, the rainy days. But it didn't seem to matter. If you came to CBI on a perfect day and then came back on a windless day, you would see the same number of smiles. The activities are extremely varied so there's always something fun to do. When the wind is great, the Mercuries and Windsurfers dot the Charles. When the wind is nowhere to be found, it is the perfect day for the, "Great Kayak Adventure" or just hanging on the hyper-dock. Even when its rainy and sailing is all but impossible, there are activities. The indoor teaching facilities are perfect for foul weather days. Here you can learn the basics, master the racing technique, or learn how to fly a spinnaker properly. I have been teaching here for a couple of years and it is the most incredible program ever!!!! Community Boating is really great. Any kid can sign up for the entire summer ofr just a dollar and get full access to lessons and everything. Adult memberships are only 150 dollars for access to the entire place for the entire year. Windsurfers, kayaks, hundreds of sailboats. Our kayak sunk and we noticed that there was a lot of water coming into the kayak and we were told by a staff member that this was normal. Both of us have kayaked before and did not think 10 inches of water was normal, but trusted that the staff members judgement. 30 minutes later of increasing water levels, where our kayak actually sunk below water, we had to abandon ship at a nearby dock and told staff members. The inside of the broken kayak was filled with water and couldn't keep afloat. We were "issued" a refund and filled out an incident report. Have yet to get a refund, we have had a horrible time getting a hold of anyone to talk to. We had to email and call nonstop and still no response. Don't waste your money on this horrible experience. read more

I'm going on my second season of membership at CBI. For anyone living in or around the city that doesn't want to bother w/ or pay for a slip in the harbor, is a casual sailor or wants to learn, this is a fantastic alternative. The season membership is about $250 and it couldnt' be a better value. For that price you get unlimited boat check out, subject to availablity of course, free lessons, access to great events and discounted parking at MGH. This latter is ahuge plus. The only time I've had to wait or wasn't able to get a boat is when (1) I want to check out one of the larger boats (Rhodes or Sonar) or (2) on Red Flag days if I needed a keel Mercury to take kids out. In most of those cases, I never waited more than 15-20 mins for someone to return something. Unfortunately, you can't reserve the bigger boats (there's almost no need for reservations for hte Mercs). The instruction is excellent and usually taught by experienced other members. There's a whole range of courses that are appropriately structured to help you progress to each next step w/ your sailing skill. Even if you're new to sailing, if you're dedicated, you can be on the Rhodes and Sonars w/in a month or so, if not less, and easily by mid summer for the more casual member. There's really no end to the range of activities available. In addtion to sailing and those classes, there's windsurfing and classes for that too, kayaks, non-sailing instructional courses, like Physics of Sailing, Knot Tying, Night/Coastal navigation, etc.. There are both organized and casual weekly regatas, and, last but definitely not least, Harbor Trips. Members get special deals on the 4th of July party and updates on fundraising galas, BBQs, etc. For anyone that really wants to get involved, there's no end of opportunities to help out around the boathouse working/maintaining boats. The views of boston from the charles are awesome! This is a perspective you'll probably never get anyplace else. You'r allowed to take guests (I forget the exact allowances) which is great if you have friend/family visiting and want to give them a unique experience in the city. The staff is generally friendly, though if there were one criticism to make it might be that sometimes they're a little pushy when it comes to care of the boats or safety rules, especially given the stress from demanding members on particularly high volume days. Obviously, this is understandable to some extent given the legitimate risk to property and for injury. And, if you're not sure if it's for you, there's also teh $99 one month membership which, if you later decide to upgrade, rolls entirely into the regular membership fee. This place really is one of the best recreational resources B-town has to offer. Do yourself a favor and check it out! read more

M.S. clearly failed to take advantage of the unlimited program of informal instruction that is not only offered by encouraged by CBI. M.S. could have gone out on the water with a more experienced member-instructor and had as much practice as desired. All that was necessary was to present membership card at the dockhouse and request informal instruction. I personally never had to wait for more than a half hour and then was out sailing with another member while learning and gaining more confidence. For a reasonable membership fee (I think the annual membership is around $200 or so now-- and you can get shorter memberships too), you get UNLIMITED access to CBI's sailboats, kayaks, windsurfing equipment, etc. Plus, they offer many classes in sailing, windsurfing, etc., so that you can learn new skills. Hands down one of the best spots in Boston. Cheap, friendly dock staff, great place to meet people, and very convenient! For $250, you can learn to sail or if you're experienced go out any day of the week. It's like vacation after work. If there's no wind - you can Kayak. On a nice summer day the river offers the best view of Boston you can get and a good way to cool off. There is no other boat club I've been to where you can get to in a 2 minute walk from the T and be on the water in less than 10 minutes. The pirate in me was absolutely delighted by this place. Without a long drive, without a huge commitment, you can get your very own tiny boat to take out on the Charles. It can get a little crowded on beautiful sunny days, but isn't that true of all outdoor havens? Totally worth it to see the Boston skyline. Make sure you bring a friend who knows the city well enough to tell you what you're looking at. Apparently they hold classes for beginners and then send them out to sea, which seems both exciting and nerve-wracking to me. The boats are a little basic utilitarian but for a couple hundred bucks a year, I don't mind a little electrical tape holding my rudder together. read more

Yesterday a friend and I just happened upon a festival of free. There were free salads, energy drinks, movie passes, etc... Though I digress because the real reason I was there was the kayaking. A friend had a month trial that she thought better use it or lose it. So there we were getting our paddles and signing our lives away. I am not the most risk averse person in the world, but whenever I do something even remotely adventurous I generally have a guide. So nothing immediately came flooding back and the staff wasn't necessarily forthcoming with helpful hints. So I had to rely on my own locked memories and the helpfulness of fellow boaters/kayakers/windsurfers. If I could give it more stars I would. I cannot say enough good things about CBI. I have wanted to learn how to sail for as long as I can remember. Community Boating is helping me realize my goal! I signed up for the low price of $240 for 1 full year. Just for example lets say you sailed once a week for 4 hours for 10 weeks (I am sure I will be there alot more) that breaks down to $6/hour. What else can you do in Boston for $6/hour? I took (2) 1.5 hour instructional courses and spent about 4 hours in a boat with other members. After passing an oral test and demonstrating I could rig the boat I was sailing by myself!!! There are free classes you can take help you gain more skill and use more sails and sail larger, faster boats. For the single guys there are more women learning to sail then you might expect. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and never makes you feel dumb for asking a question. The other members are friendly and helpful. There are several kinds of boats you can sail as you gain more experience. They also have windsurfing and kayaks. read more

CBI is one of the best kept secrets in Boston. With annual membership and appropriate ratings under your belt, you can take out any boats (that your ratings qualify you for) for free during any hours while the season is open. Its junior program have a variety of classes for kids over the summer. Better yet, they offer scholarship for the junior programs, though I pay full fees and make extra donations to support this excellent program and facility. My kids love the summer program. The staff and instructors are always friendly and helpful. It's a safe environment for kids to learn sailing, independence, and confidence over the water. CBI used to allow parents to wait for the kids on deck, but they have since disallowed it which is a sensible decision since it can get overcrowded with all the kids, staff, instructors, and then having a large number of adults lounging around. A few words of caution: There's no parking; there isn't even a proper place to drop off kids. The closest on-street parking is on Beacon Hill which is more like winning a lottery. Alternatively, you can park in the garage parking at MGH or the hotel. The best way to get there is by public transport (the T, aka train/subway) where the T stop ("Charles River" T stop on the red line) is literally right next door. Another word of caution for preparation: Kids need to prove basic swimming requirements before the sign-up, including swimming for 75 yards (or 50 yds?), and treading water (for 5 mins with no assist?). read more

CBIs Junior Program is one of the most dynamic, fun, interesting, and wonderful sailing programs in Boston. I've been sailing at CBI for 4 years, and never would have expected to learn and more importantly cultivate the love of sailing that I did. If you (or your child) has never gone sailing before, the 3 hour for 1 week learn to sail classes are amazing. It breaks down the basics of sailing, includes a ride on a bigger boat before you actually head out on the water, a day of kayaking, and finally safe and instructive on the water time in cape cod mercuries. Sailing can be intimidating and overwhelming, but CBI knows how to break it down and make sure every kid is comfortable and having fun. As you advance through the different classes you receive ratings, which allow you to sail by yourself, then in windier days, then with a jib etc. (These are for the cape cod mercuries). Sometimes this can be tedious to people because it's not uncommon for someone to take a class 2-4 times to get their rating, but it really improves your sailing. CBI doesn't just stop at Mercuries, once you take all those classes you can move onto bigger and faster boats. In addition to Mercs CBI has 420s, lasers, Rhodes 19s, Sonars, and two brand new Ideal 18s. There is really something for everyone. The classes for these boats are fast paced and fun, and you become comfortable sailing different kinds of boats, while still applying what you learned in previous classes. After you've taken all the CBI classes there are still opportunities to sail. CBI has a great Instructor in Training (IIT) program which allows kids to help out with classes and learn how to teach sailing and run a junior program. For those interested in racing, there's a great race team which sails in 420s and lasers, and also competes in regattas in MA. Summers at CBI are just a lot of fun, and sailing in the Charles is really special. The CBI staff are young but all equipped to teach sailing, and very energetic and kind. Half the time you see kids who aren't taking classes that week but come down anyways to go sailing, or to help out at the boathouse, because people just want to be there. I cannot recommend CBI enough, it's a great price (sliding scale of $1-$200), location, and what they're there to do is simple: Teach people to sail, and how to love it. read more

What's great about this place: - no hidden fees (you can take all the classes you want, take out all the boats and friends you want, whenever the place is open. rarely run out of boats) - variety of classes for different boats and activities to keep you busy: kayaks, windsurfing, mercuries, lasers, 420s, rhodes 19, sonar, harbor trips - great people (the staff is mostly high school boys and wise men, the members are diverse and all super nice) - great way to meet great people - once you're a helmsman you can take out beginners for instruction, or hop on with a more experienced - events (although i've never been to one) something to keep in mind is if you don't want to pay for the weekend rates or one-day boating pass, you (and co.) can just walk in and ask someone if you can hop on with them. usually they'll say yes. read more

Great concept, poorly executed. I am visiting Boston from Santa Fe and I heard about the dock. I purchased a short- term membership for a very reasonable fee of $99.00. After paying the fee, I went over to the dock to get rated. I stood around for awhile waiting to be helped. It seems students staff the dock. They stood and talked with each other for quite a while before asking if I needed help. Later, I returned to the dockhouse to ask for help rigging a boat from 2 young staff members who were just talking. One of them rolled her eyes and reluctantly agreed to help me. She was then so rude and so condescending; I was shocked by the inappropriateness of her behavior. I decided to abandon sailing at the community dock and requested a refund of my membership fee. It is a great concept, but the rudeness of the dock staff renders what could be an asset, an actual liability. read more

In my humble opinion, this dock is one of the best things the city of Boston has going for it. This non-profit organization gives back to the community in so many ways and is accessible to almost everybody. Do yourself a favor and do something constructive by learning a new skill which will help you develop yourself, have something to offer in social situations, and help you to be a more balanced person (something that Boston desperately needs more of). Success on the dock is all based on your own initiative, but if you want to show up and ask for it, all of the help and instruction you could possibly need is available. The facilities are not perfect, but they are very, very good....particularly considering the extremely low membership fee. So, go try sailing, try kitesurfing, try kayaking....just try it. read more
