From Elko you take the Mountain City Highway (State Road 225) north about 25-30 miles to the Tuscarora Highway (Hwy. 226). You follow Hwy 226 for approximately 12-15 miles before seeing a directional sign on a gravel road. You follow the gravel road for approximately 8 miles before seeing another directional sign and the cemetery. The views of the mountains are pretty and we saw two coyote while on the gravel road but they kept running so we weren't able to capture a picture. The town itself isn't exactly what we expected. I think we thought we would see more remnants of the town such as old buildings etc. all we really saw were two chimneys, some small homes that looked like they were occupied and the Tuscarora Pottery School which is apparently ran by a renowned potter named Dennis Parks. We did not spend a lot of time exploring the area because it was snowing and we needed to get back to the freeway to be on our way. We are curious if there are more remnants of structures that we did not see from the road since it was so cold and nasty while we were there.

The lanes for some reason aren't able to properly count the pins as you're playing, and hardly ever give a proper score. When I asked the person at the desk about it she just reset our game, and it seemed like even that was such an inconvenience for her. The same staff member also was very rude to my sister and wouldn't accept her ID because she "didn't look like her picture." I understand being concerned about underage drinking but a 30 year old with an old photo shouldn't have to worry about that. The staff as a whole seemed very inconvenienced by having to work at all. Like I said, I was disappointed with my experience and will likely not be returning. I would advise that others seek out another place to spend their money.

It was like an apartment! Yes, the furniture is older as people say, but the hotel section and the room was exceptionally clean and well maintained. No overflow of smoke from the casino at all. Everything worked - the AC cooled, heat heated, fridge was cold, water was hot. I only spent 1 night passing through and didn't visit the casino or restaurants. Even though I had this high-end room, it's hard to imagine the regular rooms being any less clean or functional. And the people who answered the phone and met me at the desk, as well as the cleaning staff, were very friendly and helpful. I recommend it.

However, if we didn't have discounted rooms, I'm not sure I would've stayed here. The biggest reason is because they don't have a continental breakfast. I understand that with a coffee shop and a diner in the building they feel like they don't need to maybe? Yet I've stayed at other hotel casinos before and usually if you stay at the hotel they give you a ticket for free breakfast at the casino diners. Maverick does not do that... so be prepared to pay for breakfast in the morning. The other disappointing thing is the outdoor pool. I will forever be partial to hotels that have indoor pools that are open year round. Give me a hot tub, please. Otherwise the rooms are super nice and clean. The showers are hot. The WiFi is free. And our room at least had a working AC and heater unit. I also think it's kind of cool that the rooms have a little balcony that actually opens. The rooms also have a mini fridge and a microwave and a Kcup coffee machine, which are all very nice to have. At the end of the day, we took these rooms because they were so cheap... but the no breakfast really is the biggest bummer.

There were at least eight employees behind the concession counter, yet when we walked up, they all looked at each other waiting for someone else to help us. After purchasing our concessions, no one checked our tickets as is typical, and we had to ask whether we were supposed to have them scanned. We also had to ask which auditorium our movie was in. With that many staff members on duty, I wouldn't expect this level of inattentiveness or lack of customer service. Lastly, the temperature in the auditorium is extremely warm--it honestly feels close to 85 degrees as I write this. It made the experience much less comfortable.

Elko getting a Jo-Ann is practically front-page news! We are often in town from Reno visiting…read morefamily. And being an avid knitter, there have been times I have bemoaned the lack of a good craft store to grab some supplies from. No, I don't count Walmart as a "good craft store". This location is fabulous and I much prefer it to the location in Reno. Of course it's clean since it is new, but the layout makes much more sense and the staff is SO very friendly. I was able to find everything I needed (and then some!). I know I will be back again and again and again! Thank you, Jo-Ann, for coming to Elko!
