The restaurant was named after a loyal friend as a tribute to him, but also as a nod to the group's tight-knit military friendship. The slang "Woadie" means a trustworthy friend; someone you can count on. Building an entirely new permanent structure, which began in 2019, proved to be a wise decision. We left our cruise ship for lunch on a mission to find some good Alaskan King crab, especially after our disappointing experience in Ketchikan. We walked along the main touristy street, but decided to meander a bit and stumbled upon Woadie's! So happy we took the "road less traveled". The construction looked brand new, having been completed in May 2025. There is indoor seating, but it was such a beautiful day that we wanted to take in the surrounding Alaskan scenery. We ordered at the counter and sat beneath the covered patio. While waiting for our food, I enjoyed a delicious draft beer and took in all the scenic beauty of Alaska. Then our food arrived. I couldn't really tell you whether the saliva at the corners of my mouth was noticeable, or if onlookers simply thought it was beer foam. No matter! One look at our dishes and we just knew we were in for a satisfying meal. Traveling to Alaska is not cheap. Everything from cruise fares and excursions to food can be pricey, but at Woadie's, the value is definitely there. For less than what we paid in Ketchikan, we got twice the amount of crab! Their clam chowder was delicious, too! For most cruises traveling through the Inside Passage, Skagway is the furthest-north port of call. If you're craving really good Alaskan King crab and are willing to wait until the Skagway stop, I highly recommend doing so, making Woadie's your destination. This was in early September and the weather was perfect: in the 60s and sunny. We sat outside and both got the regular fish and chips (greenling) and it was really really good. Service was fast and friendly. They even had Simply lemonade and Pure Leaf iced tea, which is very uncommon. Skagway was my favorite port on the cruise and Salty was one of the reasons why. The peppered prawns had a punchy flavor that was tempered by the bread provided - and I used the leftover sauce to dip my crab into whenever I wanted to switch up from the provided butter. The crab was so much tastier than the one I had in Juneau with more meat! Felt like I got a good deal on it. Chowder was my favorite of the trip. Beer selection was good - I had stopped at Skagway Brewing earlier and really enjoyed their Spruce Tip Blonde, which was also available here. Skagway Brewing had run out of the Salty Siren lager (I have to assume it was related to this restaurant!) but this restaurant had it so I got to try it. The in house gardener (yes they have one of those!) grows ingredients on site to help supplement food costs and she taught us so much about how climate impacts the plants she grows. If I had to give a negative comment it would be that the manager seemed inconvenienced by the guests and made sure to tell us that we were keeping him from his busy day, but to be fair he said he isn't usually the one who gives guest presentations so I have to give him props for doing it even when he clearly had other things to do. The Reindeer Hotdog was served in a french bread roll that was a little bigger than the dog but it held all the ingredients in it just fine. I liked the crunch of the hot dog skin and the cabbage slaw on top was fresh. I didn't notice the cheese at first and it was a very thin slice.
