Home Instead Senior Care was awful to deal with regarding our mother's end-of-life care last…read moreautumn. We hired them to provide 12-hour night-time care, from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., on Sundays through Thursdays. We were assured by them that they had, could, and would provide experienced staff for our needs. Our mother lay in her bed in her Assisted Living apartment, in hospice, with dementia and declining health, slowly dying. They did not meet either their obligations or our needs. Their one "experienced" nighttime caregiver, they kept pulling off the job for other, evidently more important daytime clients, and they kept sending us totally new and inexperienced caregivers who, frankly, didn't seem to care. Despite strict instructions to NOT SLEEP on the job, and the knowledge that we had nanny-cams in the apartment, one of the "substitutes" even brought her own blanket, and slept on the sofa for several hours at a time before we finally demanded she be removed from the assignment. Another person assigned to our contract cancelled routinely, at least once a week, on zero notice, with seemingly made-up excuses. The firm routinely failed to send a replacement. Their attitude was one of pretty words of regret and "so sorry," but, in point of fact, of flipping the problem back into our laps with no notice, no backup, and, seemingly, no qualms. The only solution to this problem which they left us, was for our closest family member, who lives 2.5 hours away in Chicago, to drop everything and drive down to "take the shift" for which Home Instead had been hired under contract. We finally had to fire Home Instead Senior Care for breach of contract. Finding a replacement on short notice was impossible. We ended up having to do the job ourselves. We did this by multiple family members tag-teaming observation of our mother all night via the security cameras. We had to then call the night nurse at her facility (since our mom had dementia and had no idea of how to use the call-for-help button) if there was a material problem. It was infuriating, insulting, and just added to our stress and heartbreak. This firm not only didn't lessen our burden, they doubled it at a time when we were desperate and vulnerable. Home Instead's idea of job performance was clearly "Family Instead." As an EMT friend of mine once said, "Run as from fire." This firm was just dreadful.

There are few companies whose customer service can be compared to that of Comcast, but after my…read moreexperience with their corporate call center, today, Apria Healthcare is bad enough that they can favorably be compared to Comcast. I called them trying to set up an account for med supplies because they are in my network (yeah-- I couldn't believe any DME supplier was in my network) and the telephony (please listen because our options have recently changed) would not let you get to the person you needed to in order to have them create a customer record. Evidently they recently updated it and didn't test it enough because it's now broken. You have to go through to the sleep team and have one of them manually transfer you to the customer service department. If they try to tell you to use the 888 number, don't bother, you get stuck in the same loop. When I eventually did get transferred - 8 minutes 37 seconds wait time [for new customers?? really??] The person there claimed to not be using headphones but must be using Vonage or Skype or some other hideously bad communications link. It is so horrid that you can only hear about every 4th word.. for example what..code.. I'm sorry what ?...dip ..code.. I'm sorry am I talking to an ice cream parlor?... finally about the 4th time.. What is your Zip code.. guess whichever country they routed the call to had trouble with Z's.. turns out it was zip code. wow... and that was the easy part.. I would avoid doing business with this company. it is just way too frustrating to try to even talk to someone (on the off chance you can actually get to someone at all).Try another supplier and let you insurance carrier know. Perhaps enough people do that, perhaps something will be done by either Apria, or by the insurance company. The FCC wouldn't let Time Warner merge with Comcast because of their horrid customer service. Perhaps there is something on the insurance side of the world that controls this. If this is where healthcare in the US is going, we are all in for a lot of trouble and stress.

It would be easier to to get an auto repair man to hook me up to compressor I think. What can a person DO ????

We had multiple issues with no shows, late arrivals, and incorrect billing. No one would call from the "office" to notify about late arrivals/absence. Our main caregiver was great but when she couldn't be there for some reason, the attempts to cover her shift was terrible. We even had one caregiver talking about her opinions regarding politics and abortions. Very unprofessional but I know Home Care by Design doesn't pay them very well at all, which contributes to their high turnover. During the initial sales call, everything we asked about was "no problem." Once we were under contract, the main issue we talked about became a problem. There were suggestions made over the phone regarding billing for long term care that sounded suspicious to me. When I asked for it to be put in writing, it wasn't. Do yourself a favor and avoid this company.
