I need to thank one of our friends for turning us on to this fun venue! The service was upbeat and friendly. The place is expansive, and spotlessly clean. AXE MKE is a very fun place to spend a little time and I want to try and come back with my team at some point in the future. Madison was incredibly friendly and really set the tone for our time at AXE MKE, shout out to her! While we had mixed results with the actual chucking of the hatchets at the wood, we all had a blast. This isn't even anything that I would ever put on a bucket list. I am fairly coordinated, but being a female and not having a lot of upper body strength I would definitely not recommend trying this. It is about $25 for an hour on a lane. There is a waiver that needs to be read over and signed. One of the employees went through all of the rules, showing us the AXE how to stand, placement of your hands on the AXE. He explained how to remove the AXE once it sticks in the wood. I felt that the employee actually should have shown us an example of how to throw the AXE. He said for insurance reasons he was not allowed to do this and said that each of us could have a test turn at how to throw. He would critique our position, how we were holding it. What line to stand behind and how to step forward to throw it. Thank God that I had beverage to drink because after my test throw, and then attempting to throw again, without any success I was starting to get so frustrated. I actually was mad that I spent the money to do this and not to have had any success with hitting anything. Each person gets 5 turns to throw and then the next person gets their turn. After half an hour I was done and never cared if I ever stepped foot into another AXE throwing place again. I honestly don't know what the big attraction is with wanting to do this. Maybe it is a guy thing. I have no idea. I now can say I tried it, I suck, and I am done trying again. I noticed they had a decent menu with a variety of drinks and even some nice appetizers. I would rather play mini golf then try to throw an AXE, at a painted target, on splintered wood. There is signage indicating the point system and how to score, along with a bucket of small mini golf size pencils so that you can keep score. There is a ship bell, near the wall, this gets rung when you hit a bulls eye. One of your teammates will ring it signifying that you don't suck. The music in the background was upbeat and a great variety. The people in there were very nice and could tell that I was frustrated. They said don't worry you will eventually get it, it takes a lot of practice. I say No thank you I am not interested in every practicing how to throw an AXE again. Now if you are up for a challenge, and in the MKE area then maybe this is something that you would enjoy. I recommend wearing comfortable clothes. I was dressed up since we met up with family, from out of town, and were going to dinner. Maybe I would have hit the board if I were more comfortable. Whatever excuse I use I can say I tried and I failed miserably. It was an expensive thing to try.

Poetry Starts at 7:30 I arrive around 8, and signed up. An older crowd for sure, like 70's mainly with a few 30 year olds, and couple 20 somethings. I was really impressed with a few of the volunteer speakers and first time readers. And I loved having the opportunity to read something on stage for the first time that I wrote. I will say I was at the bottom of a 13 people list and didn't get "show time" until like 10:15 which I felt was a bit late. It's a neat spot if you're looking to switch things up or push yourself out of your comfort zone. I knocked off a star because I felt like some of the poetry was a bit vulgar for my liking and untasteful. Somebody brought a puppy which was also a highlight-love baby things!

The stage is set up against the front window so passersby can see the excitement within, and the monitors are placed around the restaurant so all patrons can sing along. Naturally, it's exceptionally loud here, so hearing protection is recommended. When we were there, the vocalists ranged from trained singers to drunks hitting every wrong note. We heard hip-hop, country, rock, pop, and even metal, so you can step up and sing whatever you feel like. Adding your name is easy, and the hosts flow between acts so quickly that it won't take long for you to get your time to shine. What surprised me most was how often the hosts sang. The two bartenders Ernesto and Mahogany each have absolutely breathtaking voices (Ernesto in particular made my ladyfriends swoon), but they sang roughly every 4 songs despite a steady flow of various other voices that wanted a turn. To their credit, they also valiantly offered backup vocals for duets and seemed to know every song. I watched Ernesto taking orders and serving drinks with one hand while belting into the mic with the other. Definitely an impressive skill set, but they might consider stepping their participation back a bit. There's an electronic drum kit onstage, and later in the evening a guy named Sosa sat down at it and began accompanying most of the songs with flawless beats. I could watch him all night. There aren't many seats - there were about 5 tables lining the walls, which offers plenty of space for dancing, and lots of folks jumped up to dance. It was a very supportive atmosphere . So supportive, in fact, that an apparent regular named Jake came over to hit on my partner. We had fun and each got to sing what we wanted, but agreed that the place could be furnished and decorated a little more fully, and that the bartenders were a little overbearing and intimidating when it came to singing.
