Great owner who took the time to teach my son (and me) how to string up a fishing pole and get us going in our fishing adventures. I highly recommend anyone looking for there fishing needs to go here. read more

I come back here for the great service he provides. They have a ton of great stuff from bait to rods in the store and are very helpful with any questions. One of the times I came in, I was looking for a new setup. I told Billy what I was using it for and what I was willing to spend. Billy told me I could get what I wanted for half of what I was looking to spend. Honest, hardworking people at this store. I fish on the north shore, but I still come here for my supplies read more

Combs is the place to go. Theyve got the bait and are more than happy to offer recommendations for anything thatll help you catch more fish. I couldn't recommend Bill and his shop enough. Also cheaper than Dicks so dont bother with that big box BS. read more

Very nice local shop. I come here for bait when going to tanner park. Nice selection of tackle. Worth a stop if your in the area. read more

My husband loves to fish in his canoe on the Delaware River. This is the extent of my knowledge of fishing. It was his birthday so I decided to get him a new fishing pole. I checked Yelp for the best bait and tackle joint nearest to me and Combs was the only 5-star recommendation. As soon as I entered their shop I could hear a friendly booming voice (who I later came to find out was Bill the owner) assisting other customers. He was so knowledgeable and welcoming, without being condescending (I feel like some shop owners can be rude and expect you to know as much about the products as they do, but not Bill!). I explained my situation (that I literally had no experience whatsoever with fishing stuff) and right away he sprang into action looking for the perfect pole. He took time and consideration on choosing the right one and then he even put the string (wire? sorry, fishermen) in the reel (?) for me and put these awesome clips on it for easy travel. I've been recommending Combs to everyone I know who fishes. This will be the only shop we frequent for our fishing needs. Definitely worth the trip anywhere on the island. You can't beat the personalized attention and service from Bill. I'm officially a fan for life! read more

Way more than a bait shop. More like having a best friend who's a car mechanic. Billy owns and runs the place and is as welcoming to the novice fishermen as well as the pro. No ego, no condescending,,,,,, just a great guy running a great business who know his stuff. Billy and his wife run the store On Merrick road in Amityville. He's designs and makes many of the rigs on the wall. He goes out most day and gives detailed fishing reports to his dedicated clientele. Could I buy stuff cheaper on Amazon or at Dicks, sure. Will they make me feel smarter and a better Fishermen, nope. read more

Billy was very knowledgeable and friendly. He suggested and offered some good information for our weekend fishing plans. Thank you

All I can say is Billy is a class act. I came in nervous since I'm new to fishing and I didn't know how to ask for help. Billy without hesitation took my pole and set me up with everything I needed and more. He taught me how to make the best knot and other tips and trick while having a nice conversation. As soon as you walk in you can feel his great spirit. Best believe I will be coming back to his shop and I suggest everyone to support this amazing friendly business. read more

Seller of bait and tackle. This is my go-to spot for info on where the big stripers are going to be on the south shore. I like to surf fish and when I am going out at night for stripers, I like to have an idea of where they have been hitting and a fresh supply of live eels as bait - they just love those eels. In any case, Combs is the spot - he pops out his map, and points - and I take it from there. Prices are average. read more

LOVED coming here to purchase some supplies. just bought my first fishing rod and was introduced to some basic knots and ties as well as some basic equipment. prices are extremely reasonable! will be coming here again :) read more

I am a first time customer and Billy helped me with everything that I needed. As we talked he said one thing that you do not hear many owners or employees say "I Take Pride In What I Do". Right there he just got a customer for life, as I know every time I go in to the shop I will always get the best products and customer service. Thank you Mr Bill read more

This place is great! I've been coming here for years, and I am never disappointed. Billy is a great guy. He's also very knowledgeable and patient. I've bought everything here - bait, tackle, rods and reels. Also have my gear serviced. They go above and beyond. Can't recommend this place enough! read more

Billy is the man. 5 star all the way. We need more small business like this one. Where people take pride on what they do. Extraordinary person and very knowledgeable man. I felt so welcome and he had the patience to go over every single detail of the new toys I got my family. I found a new favorite shop and a friend in him. Back to basics. Families together again and fishing !! read more

Been to numerous bait and tackle shops on Long Island and Brooklyn first time here was asking a few questions about fluke rigs and was treated like family Bill is a wealth of knowledge very personable, extremely knowledgeable and didn't try to push more expensive items on me then gave a map with locations to go fishing and of course we caught some flukes and weakfish.. I will definitely be making this my go to bait shop.. read more

Best Bait and Tackle store on the South Shore. Been a steady customer for over 20 years. Bill always is super helpful putting you on the fish. Bill always takes his time to set you up with the right tackle and explains in detail how to use it. I pass two other tackle stores on the way to my boat and it's always worth the extra time to go to Combs. read more

The owner is the most respectful and nicest man you will ever meet. He will personally sit down with you and teach you new rigs and spots if you are new to the sport. Good selection and good prices. Highly recommend A++ read more

It is often said that you get what you pay for. At Combs Bait it means you get quality bait, incredible service and information that is dead-on on for fishing reports and conditions. The guy you want to talk to is Billy. Even when the store is busy, he will offer great insight and advice and take as much time as you need. I have been fishing for about 40 years (Though not as often as I'd like due to my limited schedule.) Yet every time I walk in there, I feel like I'm getting an education. He is that good! (And the drive is about an hour away from my house.) I have never been disapointed with anything he has reccommended and I have always been treated like a valued customer in this store. read more

I live 10-15 miles away from this bait & tackle store, and I pass a lot of these stores, that are much closer to where I live, but I go to Combs Bait & Tackle for a reason and that reason is the owner Bill, always friendly and ready to help you, and Bill is a fishermen like you and me and knows his stuff! I just had my second fishing rod customized by owner Bill of Combs Bait & Tackle, I had about a foot or so taken off a 7' rod it was way to soft for my liking, and Bill extended the handle for me too. Bill does great rod and reel repair, and as I mentioned customizing as well, all at affordable prices! Combs B&T is not a huge store, but it"s LOADED with all the goodies a fishermen & fishing lady could ever want. Bill even has his OWN brand of fishing necessity's AND accessories, you wont find at other bait & tackle stores. Need to know where the fish are biting, and what bait to use? Bill will pull out a map and show you. He also has the right bait on hand to catch em too. If your in the area of Amityville, NY and need bait and fishing supplies and or information, check out Combs Bait & Tackle, you won't be disappointed, that I can promise you! Good luck, and catch that big one! read more

Been coming here for years. One of the first few times I was in there. I was planning going fishing from the beach. And wanted a lot of bait. And Bill talked me out of buying that much. He informed me the bite wasn't that good save some money. Well sorry for the play on words. But I was hooked for this store. read more

Why are my and other Combs supporter's positive reviews being filtered, and shown as filtered at the bottom of the page? I'm a hardcore and longtime fisherman. Over the years, I've been to all the shops on LI. They all have the same tackle, same prices, nice guys. But Combs is the only place I will ever go. Billy always shows me the spots to go to, pulls out his map and points me in the right direction. He'll recommend a different lure than the one I picked, even if its cheaper. He was a fishing captain back in the day and has been running this shop since the 80's- this guy knows his stuff. He knows the channels, the hot spots of the day, what bait to use to reel them in, and always has on his scanner/radio checking in with all the guys out on the water and listening to where the fish are biting, what the best spots are, and where there's no fish to be found. Billy's's got the inside track and literally knows in real-time where the action is. He helped my neice for forty five minutes, showing her how to use a pole for the first time, how to use bobbers, he was so great with her. All my buddies go there and refuse to go anywhere else, even if they have to drive a little bit of a distance. In my humble opinion, best tackle shop on Long Island- not because of what they sell, but the tips, tricks, info and time he gives to each and every customer that walks through that door. Lifetime customer for life, right here. read more

Excellent customer service!!!!!!! They go out of the way to make you feel welcome!!!!!

I have been shopping here for the past few years for my bait and tackle. Bill and his staff have always been very helpful. This morning though, Bill had a recommendation which is going to be a life changer. I often go fishing with my senior citizen aunt. She has very bad arthritis in her fingers, and often has them lock up at inopportune times, like when she has a fish on the line. I asked Bill if he had something that could possibly help her. He recommended an arm rest that she could attach to her pole, then she wouldn't grip her pole so hard, and maybe avoid finger lockup. She tried it today, and she was able to fish comfortably for the entire time we were on the water. When I stopped back after to let him know that it worked, he was just as happy as I, that it worked. It is a rarity in today's world to have someone genuinely cares about their customers. This is why I continually return to shop here. Thank you so much for making it possible for her and I to continue enjoying fishing together! read more
