Actors' Theatre is back. Yahoo. After being forced to take a hiatus last season due to the…read morepandemic, it was great being back in Schiller Park for live theatre. The audience was respectful of everyone's "space" and the restrooms were following strict Covid protocols. Legacy Barbecue is back for another season with their delicious bbq. The group is currently performing Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Personally, I had trouble following large parts of the play due to the sound. I'm not convinced their new audio system is an improvement over the old wireless mics that each actor wore, but I guess that's progress. It was also a bit confusing with 8 performers filling 18 roles - with individual actors playing both male and female roles. Overall, however, it was a great night; it was great being back in the park and it was great seeing the actors on stage again. Looking forward to the next production.

It was busy on the street prior to doors opening but we got through security quickly. I wish that they had streamlined the lobby area more because we had to wait for every group to be led to their seats. This caused a major backup in the small lobby and it was difficult to get around. Once we got to our seats we were able to clearly see the stage and enjoy the view. The seats were vintage and comfy enough. The gold accents everywhere were beautifully classic. Getting down to the bathrooms was a bit challenging with all of the stairs, and the women's restroom had openings on both sides so it was difficult to tell who was next in line. There was a small medical emergency during the show and the staff handled the entire situation swiftly, calmly, and safely. I was very impressed with this theater and can't wait to come back to see another show!

Well, there is!…read more Though playing at a somewhat small venue (one of the many rooms at the Harmony Artistic Center in Hilliard, OH), this makes the shows more homy and comfy for audiences, not to mention, the laughs are louder, the cheers are greater, and the interactions are wonderful! They tend to do many shows that aren't being done "everywhere else" -- including a few "original" scripts, which were brought to life by turning somewhat well-known literature or books into stage scripts. This would have been my nieces first year going with us. Not only did we all have to wake up early to get a rapid Covid test (due to them only being viable for 24 hours), but we also drove all the way to Columbus arriving 20 minutes early to find a sign on the door stating the performances were cancelled for today. I was furious, because I had just received an email before Christmas confirming my tickets. I then checked my email and BalletMet had sent a cancellation email at 11:35 for a noon performance. That's ridiculous. We drove over an hour, so unless I would've checked my email while driving on the highway, we still wouldn't have found out until we had already arrived. We will be going somewhere else next year, because this was a total let down. My five-year-old niece cried herself to sleep on the way home, because she was so excited to finally see The Nutcracker. To say this didn't put a pretty big damper on our holiday season would be a lie. They are reimbursing ticket sales, but what's money compared to a fun-filled day of making memories at the ballet :(

I have continued that Christmas tradition with my kids in Columbus and 3 other cities over the years. I have to say this was the most disappointing. The story line was difficult to follow and the dancing seemed chaotic. The Nutcracker has always been so traditional, peaceful and magical. This year did not give any of those feelings.

Finishing construction just this past year, Timashev is one of the nicest buildings on OSU's…read morecampus. The architecture and full glass front sets it apart. With a large lobby and multiple accessible entrances, it houses a concert and lecture hall, several rehearsal rooms, and many practice rooms for music majors and non-music majors. I'm not a music student, so I don't know its intricacies. But I've found it's a great place to practice your instrument, watch a performance, or just study. There's plenty of study room on the first floor, with a variety of seating options and table heights. It's pleasantly quiet, not library level. And then there's the sound of music depending on where you are, of course. The only detraction is the background of the lecture/concert hall. The backdrop is very thinly lined, creating a dizzying, moving effect for many, including me. I've talked with a few faculty members, and this is something they're hoping to change soon. It's a pretty new building, so I give it grace.

Seats are assigned and we paid $18 each per ticket. We saw legally blonde play and the students did outstanding! Shows range from 1.5-2 hours. There was one intermission. I have four daughters who have studied dance most of their lives. One is getting ready to be a performing arts major at Heidelberg University. 1st Steps to Broadway's approach made all the difference. Most programs are "recital" based; that is, they work toward teaching dancers the steps for a routine and not much more. But Angie's program develops skills and technique and the whole dancer. I wish we had found her years ago.
