The Columbian is everything- quaint, affordable!!, fun, and the staff is friendly. This place has so much character. I do not recommend if you're looking for a modern AMC type experience. It's historic and the best seats are upstairs on the balcony in vintage living room couches. My only grievance is that they serve pizza but do not have ranch. A vintage patina much more appreciated than any state of the art Arclight or AMC. In other words, they're not trying to give you a hearing impairment :) . The popcorn stand is awesome, just what you expect out of an older and cuter theater. Balcony seating is great. My only request is they show "The Goonies" more frequently and let it be a Rocky Horror Show type deal where you get to recite the lines, throw on Prince t-shirts and leave Kennedy half pieces on the floor. Waterguns might be kinda fun too, but maybe too damp up here for that..... anyway, a lot of things could be done with it. Maybe pepperoni slices too! Could charge a little more for cleanup but would be a perfect tourist experience imo read more

We had so much fun going to the Columbian Theater last Friday night. We sat in the over 21 seating in the balcony, the couch seatting was comfy, sceen quality and sound was outstanding. I'm really torn between a 3 and a 4 star rating for here, so let's say it is a 3.5 officially. **CASH ONLY** Had always wanted to go here to catch a cheap show, but just never was high enough on my list of priorities to do so. Finally, this past Thursday night, we figured, what the hell, and met a few friends and made a fun night of it.. How can you go wrong for $4 bucks a pop for tickets? Second run shows can be lots of fun on the big-screen. Cool old theatre building. Lots of charm and history behind it. Be careful of the step in and out of the men's room, as if you are not careful, you will go arse over tea kettle on it. Women's room is upstairs via a steep ramp and steps. I am not sure how "ADA easy" this place would be given the size of the lavatories, steps, and tricky ramp, so if you are with anyone who has mobility issues, check it out prior to the visit to save some hassle. Balcony is "adults only" as they serve alcohol. This was our respite, as it is filled with comfy love seats with tables. So nice to be sans kiddoes at a cinema. Ironically, we saw a children's film on our visit. Yeah, we are not very nice adults, and really it isn't always the kid's faults, it's the fault of their clueless parental units. Still was nice to have a quiet zone. Very cozy upstairs, that I am sure can get crowded quickly during peak times, so get there at 6:30 to ensure seating. Snack bar prices were not bad at all, considering what other theatres charge. I had to laugh when I asked about the shakers of items for the popcorn. The usual suspects are there with one that I had never heard of...BREWER's YEAST!! Apparently it is really good, but too hipster for me to try....maybe next time. My arteries needed copious amounts of salt and butter this fine evening. Pizza looked amazing, and came in quite a few varieties. Boca Burgers for the tree huggers as well. (yuck, spit, vomit). Put down the tree, Gacktard....it's the movie theatre, not some lounge in Stumptown. Damn. Will try the pizza next time. 20 bucks for a whole (can get slices, halves, quarters, etc.), but it did look like it was very fresh and artisan in quality. Will give the verdict next time. We didn't sense any of the rudeness complaints that other Yelpers have chimed in about. In fact, the box office lad, and the uber-cute and sexy snack bar lass were very cool, since they are cash only and I only had a hundred dollar bill on me. Taking a check saved the day. Great concept for a theatre. We look forward to spending more time there and giving more reasons why the balcony is for "adults only". If hot buttered popcorn is an aphrodisiac, maybe the brewer's yeast will really add a kick to it. Mooohahahahah. read more

I couldn't wait to go to the Columbian Theatre. I read a mixed reviews of this place but it seemed too interesting to pass up. I really want to give it 5 stars but in my heart I know it's not true. Here are the exciting things: If you are over 21 you can sit up stairs in couches. They have an amazing selection of pizza. You can sit in the couches, eat pizza,drink beer and watch a movie. It's only 4 bucks! I also found the pizza to be very reasonably priced. I found the sound quality to be just fine despite reviews that stated otherwise There is a small table in front of each couch to hold your pizza/beverage. Here are the ho hum things: The place is a bit run down(didn't bother me) specifically the couches looked like they have gotten a lot of use out of them holes,tears, etc. I didn't find the lady working upstairs to be very knowledgeable or helpful when it came to making suggestions on what to eat. I remember this theater as a child growing up in Astoria. So knowing it from about 40 years plus ago - seeing a lot of the classics growing up down there such as Saturday night fever, Grease - I have many fond memories in there so I have a feeling that is tending to influence my opinion of the theater a little more favorably than I should. There is no other way than to say it us long overdue for a remodel. I think it again has the potential for charm of a small local theater but it has seen far better days. I don't live down there any longer so I'm not sure how the local people feel about it in the condition it's in, but it really needs to be revitalized like the rest of Astoria is. read more

I stumbled upon this place after dinner at the Bowpicker (Amazing Fish by the way!!!), and was glad I did. At $4 this is a steal. The movie playing (last night just by chance) was Hairspray, which I had never seen the new or old, and frankly wasn't totally interested. This place seemed so chill, and the price so low, I thought I'd give it a try. When I found out about the couches in the back, I was in love. I didn't try any pizza because I had just had my dinner, but both the popcorn and soda was a dollar or so lower than at a typical movie theatre, so I got my my snacks and enjoyed the show. If you can drink in the balcony, then next time I will be upstairs. This old time cinema is very comfy, has a large screen and I found the sound to be just fine. Where else can you get in to see a movie for $4 and drink beer?! We were here recently for my youngest's birthday. Two adults and four kids cost a whopping $16 to see a movie. Had we gone elsewhere it'd have been triple that easily. We usually sit at a couch and order pizza, but this time we were there just for popcorn so we sat in the regular seating. For old theater chairs, they're still pretty comfy. When it's just the man and I, we sit upstairs, have a pint or two and enjoy watching a movie; childless for a brief time. Yes the place could use some renovation and updating. But honestly I think it kind of adds to it's charm and atmosphere. And I'm soooooo glad they were able to get a digital projector. If you want a seat in the balcony (adults only), get there early because seating is limited (but cozy!) there. The ticket window opens at 6:30pm and the movie starts at 7:00pm. I call it the "pizza theater," and the pizza is yummy. We usually get the special. They serve tap beer and wine, too. The movies are only $4 and run at 7pm every day. Ahhhh I wish there was a place like this in San Diego... !!! This awesome theatre shows an old-ish movie for $4 (we saw "Unstoppable", which came out this past November). But the best part is - they have pizza (and other snacks, including popcorn), beer, wine, and couches to sit on! :-D The pizza was realllllllly good (although it did take a bit long to get), and I was very pleased with my glass of Riesling. Look... is it old? Yes. Is it a cheap and fun way to see a movie? Yes! We are frequent visitors to this theatre where you can sit on a couch, (if you arrive early enough) order pizza, cheap candy and popcorn and drinks. So it is my go to on date nights and family nights, the only way to afford a family of five to see a movie for a price that won't break the bank. If you're a snob, don't go. I am rounding up from 2.5 to 3.0 stars This has so much potential & I WANT, so badly, to love this place; old and historic with loads of character to spare. Cinema is one of passions, too. So what is keeping it down? Read on. First, the whole balcony and alcohol set-up: this is rather frustrating. The balcony is rather small with limited seating. As other reviewers have pointed out, one needs to arrive fairly early to secure one of the coveted (and kind of dirty! ) couches if you plan on sipping on a brew. If it is a popular film the balcony will fill up in the blink of an eye. Go to a comparable theater in Portland (Bagdad, Hollywood or Clinton St. as examples) and you won't have to deal with this nonsense. I assume it is because the films here are "all ages"? If that is the case, they should consider offering a "21 years and over" screening to better accommodate us grown ups. Go and see for yourself: there will be nowhere left to sit in the balcony, but you'll see maybe 3 or 4 people total in the main theater. It is ridiculous. Another observation I would like to add is in regards the films they choose to screen: about three quarters of the time it equals "meh..". Boring, mainstream second-run dreck, more times than not. Which is surprising as everything else screams "Hipster Cool". It would be great to see more genre and independent movies and would seem, to me anyway, to be a better fit with the overall vibe of the place. But maybe you like second-run movies making all of this a moot point. This theater would be incredible for film festivals and such; perfect location, right downtown and in easy walking distance to places to eat and drink, shop, etc..Not that you would have to eat elsewhere, their pizza is VERY good. Beer selection is also great, provided you get there in time to score a couch (see above). Staff have always been pretty cool in my experience. CASH ONLY. Bottom line: Cool, historic, old movie theater located in a cool, historic, old coastal town.Not particularly comfortable, but the tickets are cheap and it has reasonably priced concessions and food (just be sure to bring CASH). If your agenda includes having an adult beverage be sure to get there at LEAST 30 minutes ahead of time to get a seat up in the balcony. Otherwise, it is Pepsi for you! read more

Great theater, I enjoyed coming there until last Saturday. One of the employees, specifically a manager, was completely unprofessional, and alienating. A scene much like a child throwing a temper tantrum because he could not get his candy bar. A very kind, women went out of her way to show up early to get a good seats,and was told by the manager to get up because it was reserved. The woman kindly explained that there were no signs, no coats, nothing to make the seats appear to be reserved, and that she was not moving. The manager ( in classic temper tantrum mode ) told her that, that she was not going to sit there, and he has the power to make her move. This went on for about ten minutes, very loudly. In the managers rant, he went as far as to, sarcastically, and in his classic temper tantrum attitude, tell my friend to remove his feet from the table. Which would have been a completely sound request, if done professionally. In fact, I would consider my friends feet on the table to be helping the theater clean them off, due to lack of managerial skills. I will no longer support the theater by paying money to see movies there, and will be the first to vote to shut it down. read more

No worries for me, but the wait is long for mediocre food served and prepaired by people who look a bit old to be so hung over. We don't get here often. It offers second run movies for a reasonable price. If you're 21 or over you can go to the balcony and have good beer or poor wine or terrible pizza. We like it. Others do.
