There were a lot of people visiting the Colosseum but the lines moved very quickly. We had a Specialist that gave us a tour of the Colosseum who gave us a history lesson and answered all our questions. We had an amazing time. Lots of History here and a Must Visit if you're ever in Rome.
Colosseum is definitely one of the most impressive historical places in Rome and absolutely worth visiting at least once. Seeing it in real life after watching it in movies and documentaries feels completely different. The size, architecture, and history are incredible. For entry, arriving about 15 minutes earlier is enough. In our case it was organized and not as chaotic as expected. Also, having an ID card or passport photo on your phone is important. At night the Colosseum becomes illuminated and looks really beautiful from outside too, so even walking around it in the evening is a great experience. It was truly beautiful. Inside, the atmosphere is very different from seeing photos online. You can really feel the scale of Ancient Rome when standing there!!! I'm still in complete awwww, another bucket list experience checked off .
Came here with my wife on a surprise bday trip to Rome that she gave me. Oh.. it was so beautiful. We bought the full experience ticket where we saw all 3 spots. This was truly a memorable experience.
The moment you approach its towering arches, the sheer scale of the structure becomes overwhelming. Built nearly 2,000 years ago, this massive amphitheater still dominates the Roman skyline, a reminder of an empire that once ruled much of the known world. As you walk through its entrances...once part of a system of numbered archways that guided tens of thousands of spectators. You begin to imagine the roar of a crowd that could once reach up to 50,000 or more, gathered to witness activities ranging from gladiatorial combat to elaborate public performances. Inside, the Colosseum reveals both grandeur and ruin. The arena floor, now partially exposed, uncovers the hypogeum...the intricate network of underground chambers where gladiators and animals once waited before entering the arena. Standing there, it's impossible not to feel a mix of awe and unease. This was a place of entertainment, but also of extensive human struggle and suffering, where thousands of lives were lost for sport centuries of use. Architecturally, the Colosseum is spectacular...Its elliptical design, rising multiple stories high and constructed from stone, concrete, and brick, speaks volumes about Roman engineering excellence. Even in its weathered state...damaged by earthquakes and centuries of reuse...it still remains one of the most l impressive structures ever created. Yet, what makes the Colosseum truly unforgettable is not just its size or history...it's the emotional experience it evokes. As sunlight filters through broken arches and shadows stretch across ancient stone, the monument feels alive with memories. You can almost hear the distant clash of swords, the crowd's anticipation, and the commanding presence of emperors who once presided over these events. Today, the Colosseum stands as a powerful symbol of ingenuity, resilience, and the complexity of human history. It is both an enigma, a place where beauty and brutality coexisted. Its enduring presence continues to captivate millions of visitors each year, reminding us how deeply the past is woven into our present.
Amazing trip to Rome... ancient city with a lot of history. Visited for our 25th wedding anniversary. Best trip ever...
Can't visit Rome without seeing the colosseum. It is an amazing place and with the historical significance to the beginning of this period in history it really makes you think how power can corrupt a government ,the gladiators fights were put on to have society in those days focus on that and forget the taxes and a corrupt senate. Makes you think how we are not so far removed today. However enough political history, one of the greatest structures ever built and still standing.
So nice to be back here but I must say it's a bit frustrating coming for a visit now. My first time around we did a tour & it was easier, not bad. My most recent visit we didn't have a tour seems like these days that's the mistake. Having a tour gives u better access versus not a lot of places & areas u can't access unless u have a tour guide which honestly makes for a crappy experience. Of course this place is amazing, such history it's wild to be inside & see how well this structure has held up but the crowds & restrictions if u are not w a tour are pretty annoying. This is an amazing historical building & certainly worth visiting hard to avoid the crowds here but u can do better w a tour so at least no restrictions. U can still walk around enough to be able to see I mean let's face it not everyone can do a tour it is not necessary but it does help.
Absolutely a must visit when you are in Rome. I definitely recommend you get your tickets in advance while in the states and try to get an early time entrance to avoid the crowds albeit there will be many people there regardless. We came in July 2026 and the weather while very warm was certainly bearable. There are street vendors outside of the colosseum selling water. $3 for 1 bottle and $5 for 2 bottles as of our visit. There is 1 bathroom inside pretty close to the entrance and in the am there was only a short line. After some history you can enter the inner circle where you can get a great view of inside the colosseum and take some wonderful pictures and make memories. 5 stars because anything else would be an injustice.
As someone who hates crowds, it was hard to pass on one of the world's most historical landmarks--the Colosseum. I originally planned to just see the outside, but with some extra time, I decided if fate allows,, to schedule some time inside. Unfortunately, if you're trying to book directly through the official site, tickets are typically sold out in advance. However, you might get lucky with booking through a third-party like Viator. Yes, it's more expensive and usually includes a guide and timed entry, but it's worth it. Even though the Colosseum is only about two-thirds original, it's incredible to think about the history that lives here. I wish they had more visual guides or reconstructions to help you picture what it once looked like--it would make the experience feel more real. NOTE: Make sure to have your ID or passport with you, as they do check upon entry. I'm not sure how the standard ticketing process compares, but since I booked a guided tour, we were able to skip the line without any issues, which made a big difference.
It's a must-do, even if it's a tourist classic. Arrival at the top of the hill is kind of a nightmare with scammers and sellers all over the place - please just ignore them and don't engage with them, it will make your life easier. Otherwise, it seems they keep them away from the actual area of the forum, colosseum, and old city area because they don't seem to bother you there. It's surprising how cool it is and how much it affects you to actually see this in person so despite it being a touristy thing, it's something you just have to go see.
The Colosseum was absolutely unbelievable. Everything about it was five star. The reason for the four star rating was the protocols, staff, etc. There was no signage outside, so we waited in the security line for 15 minutes and then they tell us at the metal detectors that were supposed to be on the other side for the special floor access entrance. Then we had special tickets for the attic which wasn't supposed to be till noon so we asked if we could get up there at like 10 and they said it was very busy, but they could probably squeeze us in. And then we get up there and there was less than 10 people in the whole attic area which was like three levels of balconies for viewing... A total Ghost Town. Then upon exiting, we were trying to go out the exit for the floor access and the lady tried not letting us go out that way unless we had our tickets with us still... What is happening here... We are just trying to leave the Colosseum... What difference does it make! So the staff there's trying to sour the experience.
I have been here several times over the years and always am amazed at the enormity and complexity it took to build this historical structure. Being an engineer I definitely appreciate how long it takes to build any big structure in the US using commercial grade hydraulic lifts and cranes and thinking what ingenuity and building skills the Romans had to build such structure and for it to survive so many centuries. Truly amazing. I wonder how many of our skyscrapers we have built will be around a 1000 years from now. Come on you know the answer (:
I've always loved Roman history, so visiting the Colosseum this past October was a big moment for me. Even in the "off season," it was really busy, but that just shows how essential this spot is for visitors. Walking through the structure and seeing the arena from above really gave me a sense of what it might have felt like when the crowds were roaring, and the energy was intense. The place is huge and impressive, and while a lot of people know about the gladiators, I learned that the Colosseum was used for all kinds of events. I recommend taking a guided tour -- it helped with skipping the long lines and gave more context that made the visit even better. Also, make sure to walk around the outside area. The nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are right there and worth exploring. If you're in Rome and have any interest in history or just want to see something unforgettable, definitely add the Colosseum to your list.
It's the freakin' Colosseum. It's still standing 2000 years later. We have a hard time building things to last 100 years anymore. For that alone, you have to give it 5 stars. No picture or video I upload can truly do it justice, the scale and immensity of the place. It's one of those things that if you visit Rome and leave Rome without having seen it, you missed out on one of the world's greatest architectural treasures. Now, are there pitfalls? Sure. Don't just walk up and think you can go in, you need to make a reservation in advance. Depending on when you want to go, very likely well in advance. All around this area of Rome, you'll have to contend with people trying to sell you any manner of thing, with some of it being a scam or poor quality. Just keep walking... No Grazie. If you can get a spot on the tour that takes you into the depth of the Colosseum underground, that is definitely the way to go. For one, the natural insulation and cave-like structure of it keeps the climate very well controlled, super welcome on a hot day. Of course, in the upper levels of the Colosseum, you'll be very sun exposed, so be prepared to keep yourself protected from that. Also, in the depths of the Colosseum, you'll get to view artifacts of some of the combat that took place here and the weapons and armor that were used. You'll even get a look at the systems that allowed them to hoist large animals up onto the arena floor, and even flood the arena for naval battles. Point being, you are going to be awestruck, and the feeling of important history just floods over you as you walk the corridors and seating. Make sure you make it a stop. read more

Our first time in Italy. We flew in to Rome for a couple of days first. We booked a couple of tours and the colosseum was a highlight . For starters I everyone has seen pictures but none of them do it justice. There is so much history in this structure. For starters, Nero whose palace was adjacent to the coliseum was the one who built it. It was built on a former lakeon the palace property. I could go on and on but if and when you are ever in Rome you absolutely must see this historic structure. read more
What is there to say? Our tour guide told us this was the most visited tourist spot worldwide and who am I to challenge that? Everyone knows this is a must see destination. Definitely is worth taking a tour--then we also did skip the line which is worthwhile. It is unique and wonderful. Plan tour in advance and if sunny, wear shades and sunscreen read more

My family and I visited the Roman Colosseum while in vacation in Italy. We bought tickets without a tour guide. The line to get into the Colosseum was long so keep that in mind. They check for tickets three times before you are actually inside of the Colosseum so have them ready. Once inside we were able to walk about and see the different Colosseum displays and we were able to take pictures and go around the whole Colosseum. It can get very hot during the day so I suggest buying tickets for early morning. It's definitely worth visiting if you're in Rome. read more
A slice of history right here. I recommend that you see this, even on the outside if you don't want to go in. I want to take a moment to address the security measures as patrons have to go through two checkpoints with metal detectors and scanners. I think three ticket scans. I was with a tour group and lost my belt in the scanner machine and had to decide whether to stay with my group or look for my belt. I chose to stay with the group. I went on a guided tour and got to go through the tunnels underneath the colosseum where gladiators and animals were once held. This shows where levers and pulleys were used like an elevator to raise to the colosseum floor. I also got to go around the seating area and colosseum floor. It was hard for me to believe that the colosseum floor was wood, covered with sand and they could actually flood the floor with water to have ship battles. read more
Another amazing experience. I am so happy I made it here. I did this solo (no tour) and I am glad I did it that way. I was able to enjoy this experience at my own pace on my own time. Breathtaking architectural site and to see it and experience it is just awesome, NOT TO MENTION OF ONE OF THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD I purchased my ticket for this on line a few weeks before my trip and that process is very easy. I recommend doing that. Also be mindful that the time slot you pick when purchasing your ticket is the real time they allow you to enter So if your ticket is for 10am entrance you cannot enter before that time. I saw a lot of people being turned away and told to return at the time on their ticket. read more
Oh my god!!! You have my heart. I'm glad it stayed right next to it so I throughly enjoyed it morning evening and night. Massive yet elegant it breathes life into history, making the echoes of gladiatorial games and public spectacles feel almost real. Just breathtaking. My favorite was waking up and grabbing a hot coffee at a cafe right in front. This time of the year wasn't crazy busy and I highly recommend going now. It tends to get crowded, so arrive early. Buying skip-the-line tickets is worth it. Without saying the history and atmosphere make it a must-visit in Rome. Just the structure makes you almost feel that this is not man made so powerful and impressive not just for its size but for how well it has endured over time. Its strength and symmetry reflect the brilliance of Roman engineering. I highly recommend taking a guided tour, having a meal or coffee in front of the colosseum. Also a scooter ride just around the structure-we did that and it was beyond fun. Purchase your tickets online before you go-same day walk-ups often mean long lines or sold out slots, especially in peak season. read more
Colosseo, or as we know it as the Colosseum, is a must visit attractive when visiting Rome. The Timed Tickets (18€/adult) are very precise. Whatever your time is, you can't even come 5 minutes early, they will turn you away. The standard ticket allowed us access to the 1st and 2nd floors of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill nearby. In ancient times, gladiators battled for survival on these grounds. When we're here I'm a mix of being in awe of the spectacular architecture of this magnificent monument, but also a bit scared and sad for those who had to fight and survive, and even more sad for those who passed away. I recommend booking the earliest time possible to avoid crazy crowds. I think all times will be crowded, but the earlier the less-bad it would be. There are stairs here so wear comfortable shoes and prepare for some stair climbing if you decide to visit. read more
An absolute must-visit when in Rome! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Standing inside the Colosseum is incredibly moving and completely lives up to the hype. I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance for an early time slot on the official Colosseum website to beat the crowds. read more

Breathtaking. One of a kind sight to see. It is very well maintained and if you get early tickets, there will not be too many crowds. I was able to walk freely and take pictures without anyone next to me. The website can be a bit confusing but it is worth buying from the official seller. read more

I fell in LOVE with Rome, Italy during my 1st visit back in 2023 and was so excited that my husband & I were able to plan a 2nd visit to Rome to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary (September 2025) - love was definitely in the Roma air! :) To celebrate our anniversary, we scheduled a photoshoot and had the Colosseum in the background...our photos came out amazing! See pics included in the updated review. On the day of our photoshoot, our photographer had us meet at the Colosseum at 6:30am to beat the crowds & to capture the sunrise in our photos. Getting there early was perfect timing because there were only a few other people milling around the Colosseum so we were able to capture the shots at different angles in front of the Colosseum w/ no people in our photos. Helpful Tip: The Colosseum's exterior is lit up every night and automatically turns off w/ the street lights in the morning. It was about 7:05am when we were there (September 29, 2025) but this time can change depending on the sunrise time. The lights do give the Colosseum a dramatic effect of an orange glow - see pics. Even if you're not trying to beat the crowds for a photoshoot, I highly recommend a visit to the Colosseum early in the morning, right before sunrise because it really is something special. Getting to take in the beautiful view while standing at this grand historical monument is such a surreal experience. No pics or videos can truly capture the beauty and definitely can't capture how it makes you feel at that moment. Hope this info helps! When in Rome, this colossal landmark is a must-see. I would recommend getting tickets in advance since they sell out quickly. They offer different ticket tiers depending on how much exploring you want to do. There are plenty of scammers around the area so be on the lookout. The colosseum is absolutely breathtaking. It's been weathered by time but it only adds more character to this remarkable structure. Enjoy the view, walk around and see it from different angles, and spot little easter eggs like art etched on the walls and ceilings. read more

The Colosseum is Rome's original multipurpose arena, brought to you by 1st-century imperial ego. Built in eight years, because slave labor and divine confidence are the ultimate project management tools. It's officially called the Flavian Amphitheater, but let's be honest "Colosseum" just sounds cooler. Probably because it was built next to a colossal statue of Nero, who thought the best way to be remembered was to build a 100-foot-tall bronze version of himself. What a humble guy. Anyway, the Colosseum. It's big. It's round(ish). It's missing a few chunks thanks to earthquakes, vandals, and that one time the Catholic Church thought it'd make a great quarry. Yes, parts of your local church may literally be made from ancient death-sport arena scraps. Blessings all around. Some for you, some for me. Back in the day, it seated 50,000 people who came to watch their favorite Netflix series of Live Gladiator Fights. Modern visitors are now obsessed with its bones, snapping selfies while ignoring the fact that this is essentially a 2,000-year-old murder dome. Now I need a shower. read more

The colosseum is an amazing experience. To walk around on the outside there is no cost. However, to inside, there is a fee. Having a tour guide does provide a wealth of additional information and insight. The length of the visit depends on whether you are just walking around the outside (30 minutes) or taking a tour from within (a couple of hours). The colosseum is crowded and when it is hot out, it becomes even hotter with all the bodies. Highly encourage doing a tour of the Colosseum early in the morning to avoid the heat. Observing the Colosseum at night also provides quite the site. This is an exceptional opportunity for anyone visiting Rome for the first time, for people who enjoy architecture and people who enjoy history. read more
I'm back colosseum and it still gave me chills seeing it again. You can just feel the feels of this place knowing the history and what's happened here It's shockingly not that huge I mean it's big but you'd think it's ginormous you know? It's still impressive and the stairs a bit of a challenge if you have issues but they do have an elevator for those in need It can be hectic but eventually in the afternoon if you go it's less crowded Staff was friendly and the price of a ticket is pretty affordable read more

We didn't get to go inside during this trip. It was open, but there was a long line and limited access to the viewing. Most of the. Colosseum is under construction, which made it unattractive in my opinion. It's an over hyped tourist attraction that has been overly viewed and now needs repair. It's a stark reminder that over tourism takes a toll on the history of older sites. read more
Came at the end of November of 2025, and it was crowded most of the time had a line to go everywhere. The normal pass has limited access: only to the ground level and to go around the colosseo. The view is majestic and the architecture is full of details and its surprising that it was done centuries ago... Definitely worth coming to this place! read more
The Colosseum is a must see while visiting Rome, we visited again this time going to Rome since we had a family member that never has been to Rome, and it was on her bucket list, and to be honest, we weren't upset for taking the tour again. The colosseum was the scene of thousands of hand-to-hand combats between gladiators, of contests between men and animals, and of many larger combats, including mock naval engagements. read more

As probably one of the top most tourist places to visit in Rome, how can I not say you should definitely need to visit? This was my third time here and have been inside on a prior visit, however, this time I only passed by as a spectator and in typical tourist fashion...took a few pictures of the outside. I would recommend arriving early so that you have time to just take it all in, bask in the shadows of the history here, possibly beat the crowd and get some great photos. Definitely walk around the entire structure and see it from all angles. read more
