In terms of wins and losses (points percentage) all-time, the Colorado Avalanche fall somewhere in the middle among all NHL teams. That said, the team's playoff win percentage is good (top 10 in the league) and the Avs have won two Stanley Cups (1996, 2001). Over two-thirds (22) of the teams in the NHL (31) have won more than won Cup, though. In 1996, the Avs swept the Florida Panthers, 4-0, in the Stanley Cup Finals. It was the Avs' first season in Colorado and they immediately brought Denver and the state a major professional sports championship. From 1979 to 1995, the Colorado Avalanche were the Quebec Nordiques. Center Joe Sakic, who started his career in Quebec (the Nordiques drafted him 15th overall in 1987) won the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoffs MVP) that year. Sakic spent his entire 20-year NHL career with the franchise, through the ownership change and move to Denver in 1995, and retired after the 2008-09 season. The team retired his No. 19 jersey that same year. Needless to say, Sakic holds many team records. He also won a gold medal as a member of Team Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics. The 2001 championship didn't come so easy. It took the Avs seven games to beat the New Jersey Devils. The Avs were down 3-2 in the series heading into Game 6 and the Devils had two chances to close the Avs out. Sakic was on that 2001 team too, but it was goalie Patrick Roy who came up big. He had a shutout in Game 6, stopping 24 shots. In Game 7, the Devils scored only once, a consolation goal. "Saint Patrick," who ended up winning that year's Conn Smythe Trophy, proved to be clutch, helping to seal Colorado's second Stanley Cup victory. Roy spent the last eight seasons of his playing career with the Avs. Both Roy (2006) and Sakic (2012) were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Like Sakic, Roy had his number retired along with championship teammates Peter Forsberg (fellow hall-of-famer), "The Duke" Milan Hejduk, Adam Foote, and Ray Bourque (another hall-of-famer). These Avs teams were stacked. The Avs haven't returned to the Stanley Cup Finals since 2001, but they have made the playoffs more times than not over the last two decades. 2010 through 2017 was a rough stretch. Over those seven seasons, Colorado qualified for the playoffs only once (2014). Fortunately, things are trending up again. Jared Bednar, who was hired as head coach in 2016 (his first NHL head coaching job), has done well with the team. Bednar has led the Avs to four straight playoff appearances now and they just won the West Division (2021). He signed a two-year contract extension in 2019 that will see him in Colorado through the 2021-22 season.

I have gone to many avalanche games. To start, I would recommend finding parking east of Spear, in downtown is much, cheap, cheaper, and easier to leave. Tickets are somewhat expensive, and unfortunately only sold online. There is no box office at the arena. They can help you with ticket problems on your phone, though. I would recommend showing up early and watching pregame warm-ups. This is a great way for a young kid to get a puck thrown up from one of their heroes! You can't bring any drinks past the seventh row in pregame so plan accordingly. The most important thing is to look out for hockey pucks. We had one come flying right at us, luckily, no one got hurt. It is also a little loud in the arena, and the music is noticeably louder in the upper level. Intermission entertainment is very good. The start to the third period has a great music intro. There's plenty of time in between periods to go to the bathroom, so I would go in the later part of the break. The funnest part of going to the avalanche games, is the crowd energy. We were rocking and having a good time all night!

I truly love this hockey team, staff, hockey arena, fans, and all they stand for. They do a good job representing the right things in my book. They've bent over backwards to ensure our needs were met for every game we've attended!

I moved to Denver in January 2001 from the only city to ever lose 2 NHL franchise teams (Ever heard of the Atlanta Thrashers? What about the Atlanta Flames?). Needless to say, in the heart of SEC football country, hockey is not in the daily lexicon. I grew up thinking that the catchphrase "he shoots, he scores" came from basketball. Then one day in late April 2001, after settling in and learning a few things about my new hometown, I stumbled upon a playoff game between the Avalanche and the LA Kings. I sat in awe of the fast pace, hard hits, and pretty goals. I was officially hooked! I became an Avalanche fan that day and have rarely missed tuning into an Avs game since. Of course you will remember that the Avalanche went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2001 (their second Cup in five years). Since then no Avalanche roster has achieved such greatness but every year I still watch and hope. It is a testament to the Avalanche organization that some of the greatest players ever to play the game - Ray Bourque, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, and Peter Forsberg - have retired jerseys hanging from the rafters of the Pepsi Center. It is also quite telling that several former players have been or are now coaches or executives of the organization. And I bet a lot of people would admit that the estimable Pierre Lecroix, former General Manger and current President of the Colorado Avalanche, is the glue that binds it all together. Even though we haven't had a championship team in over a decade, the Avs games are still exciting to watch, especially in person. The action is must faster than it seems on TV. It's an absolute blast to cheer the team on at the rink. Fans at the game have the chance to win all kinds of prizes from the Avalanche sponsors and the organization goes all out for special occasions, such as retirement ceremonies and celebrations of player milestones. For the 2011-2012 season our new captain, Milan Hejduk, and a talented group of young players are expected to form the core of the team for years to come. As of this writing, wins aren't coming very easily to the team but that just means that there are plenty of tickets to go around. So get on down to the Pepsi Center and support our Avalanche. LET'S GO AVS!

My friend Pam and myself at the game.

I'm not a hockey person or really a fan, but I was able to score $22 nose bleeder seats to yesterday's game. After the first 20 minutes we moved down to the empty 1st floor. We won if that counts for anything...

My Favorite team just got a lot cooler this year! Much thanks again go out to the players and staff of our Colorado Avalanche as they participated in Movember- the month long effort to raise funds and awareness for Men's Cancers. The fun started with Hockey fights Cancer Night back in October and continued all last month as the players and staff (including Bernie the Mascot )grew some great Moustaches and hosted #DNVRMO (Denver Movember) Night and beat the crap out of the NJ Devils winning 6-1 !! Dreams do come true and the only thing better was watching Da Broncos lose and improve our draft spot with your picks, BRAVO! Now the John Elway years were exciting but my favorite Broncos moment was in 1987 & THE BOZ aka Brian Bosworth duped thousands of Broncos fans into raising a lot of money for charity. Let's travel back to 1987. We're just days away from Bosworth making his pro debut with the Seattle Seahawks against the Denver Broncos. Ever the showman, Bosworth decided to call out Broncos star John Elway. This made Broncos fans furious. So furious, about 10,000 fans wore shirts that read "What's a Boz worth? Nothing" on the front and "Ban the Boz" on the back to the game. "But if they had looked inside the shirt at the little tag that said Boz 44, Inc., they would have realized they paid fifteen dollars for a shirt made by THE BOZ's company, plus BOZ gave all the profits to the Children's Hospital. BOZ just wanted to prove how oxygen-deprived Denver fans were according to him. BRONCO NATION please let RUSS cook into oblivion. Your awesome!

Of the current 32 teams in the NFL, only nine have won three Super Bowls or more. The Denver…read moreBroncos are one of them. The Broncos have been one of the more popular NFL teams throughout my lifetime (1980s onward). With multiple championships won with hall-of-fame quarterbacks John Elway and Peyton Manning, it's easy to see why. Elway's late 90s Broncos teams were star-studded, particularly the 1998 powerhouse team with guys like Terrell Davis (RB), Shannon Sharpe (TE), Bill Romanowski (LB), and Mark Schlereth (G). Along with Elway, Davis and Sharpe have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. These guys became household names in America. Elway, who is now Broncos president, has served in the organization's front office since 2011. Sharpe and Schlereth have gone on to have careers in TV and broadcasting. I was a fan of the 1998 Atlanta Falcons "Dirty Birds" team that made it to Super Bowl XXXIII against the Broncos. That Falcons team was great, going 14-2 overall in the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record at home. It was disappointing to watch Falcons coach Dan Reeves and players like Chris Chandler (QB), Jamal Anderson (RB), Jessie Tuggle (LB), Ray Buchanan (CB), and Eugene Robinson (S) lose to Elway and the Broncos. I like rooting for underdogs. It was Atlanta's first appearance in the Super Bowl and it would've been the city's first Super Bowl win. Instead, Denver won their second Super Bowl in a row. That was in January 1999. The previous year (1998), Denver beat the Green Bay Packers in a much "sexier" made-for-TV matchup. The Packers were reigning champs, had hall-of-famers Brett Favre (QB) and Reggie White (DE), and were coached by Mike Holmgren, one of the best coaches in NFL history. Denver's coach during this successful period was Mike Shanahan. Along with two Super Bowl victories, he led the Broncos to five other postseason appearances during his 14 seasons (1995-2008) as head coach. His son, Kyle Shanahan, was one win away from coaching the San Francisco 49ers in this year's Super Bowl (2022's Super Bowl LVI). Kyle has been the Niners' head coach since 2017. Peyton Manning rode out on a white horse when he won Super Bowl 50 in February 2016. It marked the end of his legendary 18-year NFL career, the last four of which were spent in Denver. The less-heralded Gary Kubiak was the head coach of the Bronco's third championship-winning team. Kubiak only coached the Broncos for two seasons (2015, 2016) before retiring due to health issues. I remember Super Bowl 50 best for the incredible defensive play of Von Miller (OLB). Against the Carolina Panthers, he racked up 11 sacks and recovered three forced fumbles. He was named Super Bowl MVP. Only two other linebackers this century have been named Super Bowl MVP: (1) the Baltimore Ravens' Ray Lewis in 2001 and (2) the Seattle Seahawks' Malcolm Smith in 2014. The Broncos drafted Miller with the second overall pick in 2011. Great pick.
