Terrible vets. When you need them they can't see your pet. Want to send you to the emergency vets in Suffolk or Yorktown. And they want bi annual check ups. Never had a vet that wants to see your pet twice a year. But when you need them they are sorry but we can't. Any vet I ever had if it was an emergency would have me bring them right in. We were able to schedule rather quickly, we let them know we need the soonest time in the morning due to a busy schedule & living over an hour away. They took our Rooster in, but they asked to hold him, we waited 4 hours in the car as we couldn't go home. We called and checked the status; they still have not looked at his dislocated toe (we needed help with splinting as he wouldn't keep the DIY splint at home on). We asked to reschedule, they would have charged us another visit fee which made no sense, why not treat him during the time we came in? It just seems like a money hunger organization. We were really considering moving our dogs and the chickens here, but after not treating the injury at hand during the scheduled appointment time and wasting our whole entire day with no results, we do not recommend this vet to anyone who is on a time crunch and who want help at the appointment time booked. I'm not going to lie, I miss Dr. Sullivan so very much, but I know he is enjoying his grand children and that is what is important. However, I will say Dr Kroenlin has been very supportive with all our pups. We just lost the last one and they could not have been better to us. I think we all had to adjust to Dr K, because we were so used to Dr S, the pandemic did not help much because we could not go in with our animals..... but as time goes by I believe the group is adjusting to us and us to them. We've been going to Dr. Sullivan for nearly 17 years. The staff here have been great through the good times and the bad. They've seen our dogs come in as puppies and were right there with us when it was time to say good bye. There is a lot of variation in the vet industry, and it's not hard to get taken for a ride on expensive procedures. Colonial vet has always been our choice because of the extremely high level of care they showed us and how conservative and reasonable their prices are. I have referred a number of friends to them coming on the heals of them getting gouged at other vets. Both of the Doctors there are kind and I honestly don't have a preference when I take my dogs in because I know they both are going to do a great job. Overall, I think you will be hard pressed to find a better vet in Williamsburg that you will want to stick with for years to come. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Kroenlein for the past 2.5 years with my rescue bearded dragon Flapper. Colonial Veterinary Clinic was the only vet in the area that would see a reptile. When I began coming to the clinic Flapper was fairly sick and had pinworm. Over the course of two years Flapper improved drastically but eventually developed cancer in his jaw that caused a lot of problems for him and I had to have him put down. All I can say is that through every step of my journey with Flapper, Dr. Kroenlein was the most caring and wonderful vet. I went to Stahl exotics up in NOVA at one point just to see if they had any advice on his condition - and I did not feel that I received the same level of care from them. Especially when Flapper had to be put down I knew that Dr. Kroenlein would provide him with the most comfortable end of life care. I genuinely cannot state how much I loved this vet clinic. I am sad that I am moving but I definitely will remember all the heart that went into Flapper's care here. I hope to rescue more herptiles in the future and can only hope that I find a place in Richmond that offers such lovely care. I also wanted to mention that the front office staff were always super awesome. Even when they were obviously totally swamped they were always kind and receptive! I take my dogs to the Army Vet at Ft Eustis for routine shots because of cost savings but have had too many doggie emergencies for which the Army vet doesn't provide services. I've gone to Colonial Veterinary Clinic for three years now and have had nothing but positive experiences. Staff and doctors have always been helpful and attentive. I've tried to use these people twice, because of a recommendation from a neighbor. Both times, we were blown off. One time I went in with an emergency with my baby, and the best they could do was say We'll put IT on oxygen." We lost that baby to cardiac arrest! The next time we called to make an appt, and were put on perpetual hold, so hung up and called God Speed and they were attentive and so helpful, they now have 3 new patients, these duck faces don't. read more

Dr. K is fabulous. I have been taking my shit tsu to this practice for 10 years. We had a difficult decision to make regarding her ability to have dental surgery with a heart murmur. Dr. K called me on a Sunday morning with the results of her lab tests and discussed treatment options. She went through surgery with flying colors thanks to his expertise. I could not be more pleased with the level of professionalism that he has demonstrated. All of the doctors in the practice have been good, although Dr. K. is great! II wish I could give a zero. I am new to the area and did not have a vet. My dog went into heart failure and had to be in the hospital for a few days. When he came home he wouldn't eat. The hospital said to take him for an anti nauseous injection to a local vet. I called this facility and told them my dog was very sick and needed this. They said they weren't accepting new patients. What kind of vet doesn't help an animal in need. I asked again stating it was important. They said they would ask when the vets came in and they would call me back. She was horribly rude to every caller that came in while I was there and made people wait to check in for her to finish texting. Called to see if they would have time to see a hurt pup. They informed me that if I had not used their care previously that new pet appts are only available a few weeks out. I am a woman and animal lover +++++. I have been bringing our family pets, cats and dogs, to Dr. Sullivan for 20+ years. I have been to 3 other vets in the area, with no complaints, except for the exorbitant fees I have been charged for simple routine shots. I have never been talked down to by either of the doctors, in fact, I have found them to be very congenial and wonderfully gentle and accommodating to my pets and children and family members who have taken my pets to the doctors in my absence. The reason Dr. Sullivan "has made millions" (?) over the years is because of his professional work ethic and dedication to treating animals in our community. I have been bringing our dogs to Dr Sullivan, Dr Manglesdorf, and now Dr Kroenlein (sp?) for 18 years. They have seen us through new puppy stage to the very sad end of both our beloved Okie and Cooper. They have treated them as I would want any family member treated. For a while there they had a woman at the front desk that didn't remember my name or our dog's name EVER. She is no longer there. Now the front desk is very helpful and friendly. Kelly took a real liking to my Cooper and would make over him every time we came and of course the other ladies were very sweet to him too! He was a real character. On November 2nd we had to take our dear Cooper in for his last time and they all hugged me and cried with me. Dr. Kroenlien was so amazing with us and with Cooper. Such an awful experience of having to watch your baby go across the rainbow bridge. But it won't be long until they see my face show back up with another baby to love. I can't go long without a dog. The Colonial Veterinarian Clinic in Williamsburg is a SCARY PLACE to take your Pet. I had my Pet boarded there and when I picked her up, she seemed traumatized, like someone did something to her. Another time my other Pet was misdiagnosed by Dr. Mangelsdorf, I took my Pet to another Vet and we diagnosed my Pet the properly. The last time my other Pet was taken to Dr. Sullivan (The owner), for a lump on her belly, Dr. Sullivan had her on his operating table to do a biopsy, then Dr. Sullivan called me up at work and started talking down to me like a was a little uneducated school girl who didn't know any better, and told me my Pet had cancer and that I should give him permission to put her to sleep NOW! I said no to Dr. Sullivan and we should wait for the biopsy to come back and we did, Dr. Sullivan raised his tone to me ans stated he did not agree with my decision. Guess what ? the biopsy came back and it was not cancer like Dr. Sullivan tried to get me to believe, it was another form of tumor. I was right and I am not even a Dr., I just used common sense.....We had eight more Wonderful months with out pet, then realized the tumor had taken it's toll and we knew it was then time to put her to rest. I called Dr. Sullivan to have our Pet put to sleep, once in the room, Dr. Sullivan told me in his own words "Don't look I am going to stick her in her heart with this needle" It all caught me by surprise. I asked several Other Veterinarians if this is how a Pet should be put to sleep and they said no. This is a cruel way I have been told to put an animal to sleep. I give Colonial Veterinarian Clinic a no star at all. There are so many other Wonderful and truly caring Veterinarians to take you loved Pets to, why settle. read more

We have been taking our dogs to Drs. Sullivan and Manglesdorf for years and couldn't be happier. Both vets truly care for the animals and know what they are doing. Their prices are extremely fair, and they explain everything in great detail. We have seen both vets for various things from routine visits to cuts and bumps to surgery. They always answer all of our questions patiently and in plain english. We just had our puppy spayed and microchipped with Dr. Sullivan this week. It's always hard to leave a pet in someone else's care, but we knew she was in excellent hands. We drive 45 minutes just to keep our dogs going to these doctors and they are worth it! I always know my dogs will receive the best care there, and without them trying to sell me on additional services that my dog doesn't really need. I would HIHGLY recommend Colonial Vet! I just stumbled upon the previous review and wanted to make sure to take the time to provide my own feedback. Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Mangelsdorf are wonderful. Our experience has mainly been with Dr. Sullivan over the past fifteen or so years. I have never, ever seen or heard Dr. Sullivan "talk down" to anyone. He is professional and exceptionally kind to the animals and their owners. We have had two dogs put down due to old age and Dr. Sullivan did one and Dr. Mangelsdorf did the other. Both times were naturally upsetting to us but both doctors were incredibly thoughtful. We have also had other friends who have had to go through the same experience and they too found Dr. Sullivan to be very supportive and professional. Dr. Sullivan has definitely not "made millions" and he does not "cater to the old and elderly". The fact is that Dr. Sullivan often provides his services at a deep discount to his patients and frankly, we sometimes wonder how he manages to make any money at all. As a case in point, he has been driving the same car for at least ten years. I hope that people will ignore the previous review. It is totally inaccurate and unfair. My guess is that putting down her dog was very upsetting so she chose to lash out at the veterinarian rather than express her emotions in other ways. Implying that Dr. Sullivan is a misogynist because he does not have a female doctor on staff is insane. His practice is extremely small; he only has one veterinarian there besides himself. So what if he is male? He employs a number of women and has always treated them well. It is also crazy to insinuate that he does not like non-geriatrics. Additionally, he is the most reasonably priced veterinary clinic in town. I hear about exorbitant vet bills from my friends who go to other veterinary clinics and I am so grateful for Dr. Sullivan's refusal to overcharge his customers despite the fact that it seems to be the popular trend in both human and animal health care. I could not recommend Dr. Sullivan more highly. He has always taken wonderful care of our dogs and he has always been kind to our family. We'd never dream of taking our dogs to anyone else. I will make one final comment about the previous review: if you are considering giving it any merit, I urge you to click on the reviewer's name and read her other reviews. We moved here three months ago with are two dogs and have taken both to Colonial Veterinary Clinic. Our experience has been far from good. We have met both Doctors there and both lack any "bedside manner." Although I recognize it is different from treating a person, I think most people would agree that if you are loving animal owner you appreciate a vet that makes eye contact with you, speaks in language that an average person can understand, someone who communicates with empathy and someone who uses appropriate pragmatics overall. One doctor implied that we weren't good dog owners which was majorly offensive and the other doctor I had to literally stop him mid sentence to get a word in edgewise. They seemed rushed and cold. Lastly, every vet we have ever been to always has the sweetest most loving office staff, I would venture to say the office staff is the least friendly we have encountered. With all that being said we will be finding a new vet here in Williamsburg...hoping we find one that communicates empathy and respect to not only our pups but to us as well (especially since we are paying them). read more
