SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG TO FINALLY WRITE THIS REVIEW, BUT I HAD TO MAKE SURE I COULD GET THE POINT ACROSS THAT YOUR THE BEST! I was having car issues and well to be honest every place i took it to had a different opinion (1) My alternator was done (2) There was electrical issues. All opinions but didn't want to mess around with it themselves. I was told to call a guy who specializes in electrical who comes to your house (pretty awesome) and made an appointment. I had to wait two weeks since he was on vacation but he came and everything checked out that i just needed an alternator and didn't see what everyone was making a big deal over. So within a week i went back to the place who told me to call him and gave him his diagnostics. They gave me the run around about being busy etc and never called back, which was disappointing because me and my family have used them regularly in the past for years now. Anyways i called around and got price quotes from several shops located by me on the south shore, so i decided on Sears even tho honestly i hate the work they do but the price was $200 lower then other places i made the appointment to go in. It was no picnic getting my car there since my alternator was dead id have to charge my battery fully to run it , then it would die, and id i have to repeat until i got to my destination. Finally got it to Sears to be fixed and well i got a call back because they couldn't fix it due to some bracket that i needed from Lexus etc. i called Lexus and could have the bracket it 2 days once ordered. I called Sears back told them the news etc and i received a call back from the shop manager who basically gave me the boot because they didn't want to be responsible to fix it because of some bolt that was seized to the engine and said i should take it to Lexus. Feeling defeated at this point since no one can fix my car, and losing my job since this was a dragged on procedure for about two months. I called a friend who is about an hour away in NJ who happens to be a mechanic who insisted if i got my car there he would definitely figure out how to fix it . So i was back to the drawing board and stated calling tow places to get quotes to get my car towed out to NJ. NOW FINALLY TO THE POINT OF WHERE COLONIAL AUTO REPAIR CAME INTO THE STORY! My best option was to use my Geico roadside assistance since they covered most of the fees besides the extra mileage, I explained the situation since my car was sitting in the mall parking lot by sears and where i needed it to go in NJ. I received a call back from the tow truck dispatch who put me though to who i would believe to be the owner of colonial (Tommy). I went through the whole story you all have basically read now, where he said if you don't mind ill take a look at it since he has an auto shop and see if i can fix it. He would be happy to pick up the business and well save me the money on the tow. He was very busy that day at the shop but he said he could look at it for sure the next day. He said he would let me know if he could fix it and if not he could tow it out to NJ. At the end of the conversation I of course look up reviews on Yelp and well agh i got a little nervous. However, when you read most of them they don't pertain to his business more the gas station side and what did i have to lose, I was already between a rock and a hard place. I got my car there right before they closed that night and well i must say i've never seen so many vehicles at an auto place, i couldn't even park lol. This was a definite sign that they do good business. Waiting inside as they process everything i hear who i would assume is a lady who works there saying good bye to everyone (Sir, Jr, Etc.) This was where i learn that its a family run business and i love that. The next day comes, i get a call from Tommy's son who explains to me that there is an electrical issue beyond the alternator. He explained that they had just put in a new one and it burnt it out. We spoke about an estimate on what the electrical would run me before he did the work but was confident he could find it and fix it etc. I gave him the OK and received another phone call about roughly 2 hrs later telling me it was fixed =-) He explained in detail what he had to do and why it probably happened etc. I honestly still today cant believe how much time he spent in communicating with me over my car issues, and this is coming from someone who normally you have to tell to shut up. I went to pick up my car and actually got to meet Tommy, i made sure to tell him overall how thankful i was. The people there are wonderful and i'm a GUARANTEED REPEAT CUSTOMER. It takes me about 30min without traffic to get there BUT its worth it. I'll actually be going there to get my inspection done before the month is up, i know they don't make money on it but its just to show face that i will be a future repeat customer, and ahh who knows if ill pass inspection, maybe they will have something else to fix =-) read more

Very friendly, courteous, and affordable. Too boot their expertise is phenomenal. Had to take my mother's car in for inspection. Quick, easy, and well priced. A rare find on Staten Island these days. If you want just another station who will eat up your money you can go elsewhere. Absolute worst experience ever. No communication despite calling them three times throughout the day I'm an out of towner who Dropped the car off with a flat tire towed by AAA at 8:40 am. Guaranteed rip off. Brought me in with a $50 belt replacement, of course they charged me $72 for the belt and $250 labor. Told me I needed a bunch of other things total came to $725. Of course they were waiting for the parts and started the work before telling me that price even though I specifically asked for the price first. Didn't honor the 10% AAA discount, said that was the price WITH the discount. Started making up way higher prices afterwards then had the nerve to tell me that he was actually losing money on this! Told me he couldn't discount the price further cuz he'll get in trouble by his boss. 2 seconds later he's on the phone telling a guy he's the owner. As far as the quality of the work, I suspected that they might've forgotten to put the screws back in from the stuff they took apart and sure enough, they didn't put the screws back in. Then he tried to tell me it wasn't there to begin with, only problem being it was there this morning! Miraculously one of the workers in the back brought out the exact screw for my exact model car. Not an isolated case. Heard him talking on the phone all day long ripping people off. read more

if i can give a zero rating i would. i went to them back in january of this year. they held my truck for a few days. my friend called me one morning and said he saw my truck in tottenville, this shop is in new dorp. when asked why the owner said he was taking his son to school. 1046.00 dollars later, they did nothing i asked except for an oil change. i had to then bring my truck to two other shops to fix what they missed to begin with. when i disputed the charge with american express, the service station said they would get an attorney to sue me for harrasment. huh? bottom line, if you want to get ripped off, and have a stranger drive your car around staten island, this is the shop for you. read more

it's absolutely rip off , I bring my van in for not having enough air blowing from the vent and they supposed to diagnose the issue and tell the customer how much will be . when I called to check on the car the said you need a new blower motor and we already got it in, and when I pick up the car ,nothing changed..same amount of air from the top and no air blowing from the bottom vent and i ask why no air blowing from the those vent ..the answer was ..this is the best you will get we can't do ant thing about it . And how much to replace a blower motor $432 , $250 for labor +$143 for parts . when I did my research the labor for the job in my area is $60 and take 15 min and the part that was installed (AZ pm4000 blower motor)in the van cost $75 . I'm still waiting for a tow as I write this review. Were told it would be here at 1:38 pm. At 1:38 pm were told it would be 45 minutes extra. Ok. It is now 3:33 pm and still no truck. Dispatch makes no effort to appraise us of the time and I had to keep calling to be told "we're on the way" no ETA until I have to pull it out of the dispatch and the times are not being met. He keeps blaming it on "the heat" whatever the hell that means. Don't give times if you cannot meet them. If you insist on giving false information at least call us (we know you can, you did it ONCE) to give us additional false information so at least we can pretend there's some competance going on. read more

Colonial Service station on Richmond Road and New Dorp Lane in staten Island, New York sells Shell gasoline and participates with Stop n Shop gas point program. The gas attendants are rude and always stop the pump without rounding it off to the dollar or a quarter or 50 or 75 cents. When you ask for change, they say they do not have any. This past Sunday, I asked for my change, the attendant said we do not have change, I responded that we have a problem, he responded, 'I'll see if there is any in the office' he left, when he came back he handed me pennies. This is not the first time this has happened to me at this station, there are two gas attendants that have done this to me on more than one occasion. I wrote a private e mail to the owners website, I did not get a response. I am putting this out here to try to put a stop to these people harassing people and scamming. read more

I had problems with this place twice, both within 2 years. First , 2 years ago my car wouldn't start. I called AAA they sent a tow truck from this place. I said it was the battery. The tow truck guy got his little box and tried to charge my battery. Still wouldn't start. He then said, "it's the alternator we can tow and fix the problem". I declined because I knew it wasn't the alternator. I then knocked on my neighbors door to help me diagnose my car, because he is so good with cars. My neighbor jumped my car then started right up. He said it was the battery. I got a new battery and the alternator is still working great. The other day my husbands car was not starting. I called AAA they sent me this company again. Alright I can forgive and forget no problem. The guy was nice. My husband and I suspected it was the battery. Again the guy had the black box to charge the battery, then the tow truck guy said" it sounds like the starter." He then hammers whatever it was on the engine. Then said, "the car might need a new starter, I can tow it to our shop and look at it". We declined, thank goodness because it would have cost over so much money we don't have to spend. I again bothered my neighbor (after the tow truck guy left) to jump car, and would you know it, it started up. I did complain to AAA. The owner of this company called back, saying it been in business for over 40 years. It probably was a great place once, but it's a different generation working. Called lazy and greedy. I suspect extra money giving to those truck drivers bringing in cars, because they are quick to say bring the car in without actually looking. read more

This is the ONLY place I will take my car on the island. They are a AAA and GEICO approved service station and the owners (family-run) are ALWAYS courteous and, I believe, honest. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee (2002) that was giving me A LOT of problems especially with over-heating. I went to other places in the past getting the fan system and hoses replaced only to have the car over-heat 2-3 months later. UNTIL I took it to Colonial. Dave, one of the son's of owner, is the best. Since Colonial fixed the system, I haven't had a problem with the car. I had another place put new front brakes in, they messed it up, and so I took it to Colonial where I never had a problem after. I had to get my transmission rebuilt, Colonial was the place I took it too. They guarantee their work and are always willing to help their customers. They are a bit expensive but quality, safety, and peace of mind when driving is worth the price. I get every car repair (inspection too) done with them, EXCEPT oil change. They charge approx $80-95 for synthetic oil change...a little too expensive compared to other local businesses ($45-60). BUT I don't know, I may get my oil changes there b/c I can leave there guaranteed they did it correctly. read more

Very bad experience with this place. In short: I was charged for service done on my vehicle them to hold off on, charged for a diagnostic fee that was never disclosed to me up front, and charged for gas that the tow truck driver brought after calling AAA for a tow. And my car is not running well. Read on for the long version: My car died on 9/2- was low on gas, and while driving, the engine, battery, and oil lights all came on at the same time. Could feel the car losing power, so pulled over, turned the car off, and it wouldn't start back up . Called AAA for a tow, asked them to have the tow bring gas. Tow got there, the driver turned out to be from Colonial Service Station on corner of New Dorp Lane and Richmond Rd. Told him what happened, and that I was low on gas- he said oh no couldn't be 'cause of the gas, and never put any gas in that I asked to be brought when I called AAA. He tried jumping the car too, but wouldn't start. Was going to have my car towed to a mechanic closer to where I lived that my family often used. The tow truck driver went on to explain to me that Colonial was right down the street from where I broke down, less than 5 minutes away, that they were family owned, in business for a long time, really good work, fair people- that I should take my car there, so I was convinced and had my car brought there- big mistake. Car was brought there, went inside and dealt with another guy behind the counter and gave him some info. All the time, the tow truck driver, this guy behind the counter, none of them ever mention a $140 diagnostic fee. I know some places charge, but there are others that don't. Where I wanted to take my car in the first place doesn't charge a BS fee like that. So since it was a holiday weekend my car wouldn't be seen until Tuesday earliest. Nobody called me on Tuesday- I called them by late morning, car wasn't looked at yet. Was told they would get to it by afternoon. Called back in the afternoon, was told they still didn't get to it, they would in about half an hour. So here it is I've called twice, my car hasn't been looked at yet supposedly, and still no one mentions to me about a diagnostic fee. And there's no sign posted in their place about it either. So I've had interactions with 4 of their employees even before my car is looked at and no one mentioned about this $140 fee. So finally on my third call later in the afternoon on Tues I spoke to Dave. He had just happened to get done looking at my car and was just about to call me, guess I got great timing. Told him what happened and about being low on gas. He said since I was running low on gas what probably happened is debris from the bottom of the gas tank probably got sucked into the fuel lines and was clogging the fueling system. He recommended a fuel injection service. And this is when I found out the diagnostic fee. He told me it was about $140 and the fuel injection service was about $150 and that he had put $15 worth of gas in my car. I told him to hold off, don't do anything and I would contact him the next morning. The next morning I decided to go down there in person cause I didn't like how these guys were doing business. Dave wasn't there so I asked about the fee and why should I be paying for something they weren't up front about. No one else could help me there and I was told I would have to take it up with Dave. So decided to wait for Dave to come back. I don't know whether they called Dave while I was waiting or he just happened to call in, but spoke to Dave on the phone while I was down at this place. Was arguing with him why I should have to pay a fee that I wasn't told about up front. Told him had they been upfront about that fee my car would have never gone there and I would have used my original choice for where I wanted to take my car. So while arguing with Dave he tells me I'm being charged for the fuel injection service too. You know, the fuel injection service I told him not to do- well he went ahead and did it. And told me the car was running just fine now. This guy just talks and talks and talks, more like a salesman if anything, trying to justify why I should pay for fees and services that they were back handed and down right sneaky in sticking me with. In his ramblings Dave did apologize and offered me a free oil change to make up for things. But the conversation just turned pointless and long winded. I just wanted to get my car and get out of there, so agreed to Dave's kind offer of splitting the bill with him and paying $150. Now, my car doesn't run fine- it struggles to start up, and when accelerating the engine makes a loud rattling noise. Supposedly they're in business for 40+ years, you would think they'd know how not to leave their customers with a shady impression. read more

GEICO approved towing company. I had an issue today with my car cranking and not starting. I called GEICO to have a tow. When the driver came, he was super helpful and knowledgeable and went out or his way to help me. He asked me what was wrong with the car, and said he thought he might know what was wrong. He actually got the car started for me!!! I thought that was such an honest gesture by him b/c they don't make money if they don't tow the car. I will keep them in mind for the future. After stopping at a gas station where they were too busy to do my inspection, I pulled into Colonial Service Station. The man at the desk, Mike, told me they could do my inspection right then. I was finished in about 15-20 minutes, paid, and left. An hour later, Mike called and apologized because he accidently overcharged me, $37.00 instead of $10.00, (since my car is fairly new). He said that he could credit my card or I could come in for the cash. The bottom line is, I would never have known that I was overcharged and I think that it was really nice that Mike went out of his way to let me know that he made an error. I also like how quickly I was in and out of there. I would definitely recommend Colonial Service Station to my friends and family. read more

I had a great experience here! I went for my NY state car inspection. I called in the morning and they were able to give me an appointment that same day. They took my car right away, and I waited only 20 minutes for the entire inspection. Everyone who worked there was very nice and friendly. I think it is a family business, and you can tell they really care about their business and their customers. I started using Colonial Service Station approximately 8 years ago, since I began working next door to the station. I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero and Dave, along with his super mechanics, have kept "Betsie" up and running. I have never had a problem with any of the repairs they have done and I find thier honesty above reproach. Having an older vehicle is a challenge and Colonial has met the challenge head on.
