"And we have come to believe that it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with a wrench." -- NCIS, Season 4, Episode 22 So much to taste in such a tiny little shop - I'm not sure how they stay in business, frankly. You walk in and are immediately confronted with hundreds of jars of jellies, mustards, relishes, hot sauces, dips, sauces, nuts, cookies - the list goes on and on. However, the store is a mad-house. Positively packed! At each "station," there are open jars for tasting with large buckets of pretzel sticks, animal crackers, wheat thins, etc. Only some of them have tongs... so let's back up a bit. At the doorway to the store is a large handwritten sign that says NO KIDS! Kids will use their hands and not tongs. Okay, sure, if unsupervised and not well-behaved. But, hello store owners, at least 1/3 of your containers were missing the tongs and I had to (quite carefully so as not to touch anything else within the container) use my hands to grab a cracker, cookie, pretzel (or three). So while I get your sentiment, I think you need to pay more attention to the people who are probably stealing your tongs. Also, grown adults double-dip. Hopefully, not in your store. I digress. I tasted a ton of things, and truly, by the end, my tastebuds were shot. I did enjoy that they had college pasta, hot sauce, peanuts, etc. And also a ton of crazy hot sauces that I got a kick out of (so did some of my friends). I was disappointed that a store called Colonel Mustard's smallest collection was of mustards (maybe a dozen?) and that is what I was most excited to taste and purchase. I would have probably bought them all had they had a bigger and more interesting selection. Pity. Overall, it was a fun experience, but there is no urgency to buy anything. You can just walk through, taste everything, and spend no money. How do they not lose their shirts? Cute concept, fun experience, might visit just to buy crazy hot sauces you can't find easily in the future. Also note, not one of their "hot pepper jellies" was the least bit spicy. Also, a big disappointment.

this is not an all you can eat buffet for children

I served it when I was having company, an no one liked it. I threw the whole thing in the trash. Bye bye $10. I went back to the store to get some oil and told the woman my experience with the couscous. She said she would tell the owner. She never offered a discount, or a refund. Not a good way to handle your loyal customers.

I once had a $500 order she said was the largest non corporate order she'd ever filled. Like I said...Love it! My favorite oils are the Garlic and Basil..use them in everythiing from salad dressings to pasta dishes and the add great depth and layers of flavor. I also love the lemon oil...fabulous in dressings and anywhere you want a lemon flavor without the tang of the acidic juice. On the Balsamic VInegars- they are FABULOUS! You Can literally make flavored lemonaids with them- Try adding the peach or raspberry flavors and you'll see. I also love the lime or peach over fresh tomatoes! And the peach vinegar with the lime oil! YUM! You can mix them with sparkling water for a replacement to all the sugary sodas and you won't miss them! Try the chocolate, fig or regular balsamic and you'll see what a great substitute they are for coke! Just make sure you don't make your drinks too strong ( 1 or 2 tbls at most per 8 oz) or the acid can damage your teeth! But the acid also helps you eat less and feel full longer so you lose weight! There are also a nice variety of mustards and jams..great for chacuterie boards. She also has some cute and unique gifts ranging from Clemson spoons etc to holiday and kitchen items. Great to browse and great to fin a special gift for someone who "Has everything" NOTE: She closes at FOUR PM...Don't wait till later in the day to shop or you'll be going back the next morning!

The Spice & Tea Exchange - Salts

The Spice & Tea Exchange

I typically prefer local businesses especially in Asheville to chains, but this one gets a pass…read morebecause it's quite good. I've purchased many rubs, salts, spices, and sugars from them over the years and all of them have been amazing. I especially like their smoked salts. I like to bake giant chocolate chip cookies and sprinkle them with the smoked salt crystals to give them an extra layer of flavoring. You can taste anything you want such as the salts or sugars or rubs, just ask one of the associates to help you. You can smell anything you like yourself by just opening the jars and taking a nice whiff. Many items come in bags and some come in shakers. If you get something coarse you can ask for a grinder top that goes on your shaker for when you want smaller particles. I love the butchers blend general purpose seasoning for many things. My kids love the cinnamon sugar shaker with a grinder top....the put it on everything and we frequently run out. In addition to salts, spices, and sugars they have a huge tea selection. And before you scoff at the prices, just remember it takes just a tiny amount of these high quality loose leaf teas to make a cup of tea. Teas that you buy in the store are not fresh and are harvested too early, commercialized, and it requires a lot more to get the flavor you want. So these tiny bags of tea really do last a long time. I like to look up ancient tea and herbal blends online and then buy all the components here and make my own teas to try and then adjust the recipes to my liking. They often have some free samples of tea and other items to try hot or cold in the store, just ask. For me this is a store I always stop at when visiting Asheville.
