I guess +1 is the lowest review I can give... 0 is not low enough. So 2 years ago (2023) I opened member, savings and checking account there as I needed to get some legal papers generated and they are close to my house (and I didn't have another local bank, plus I'm retired from Collins Radio). Well, I just did the minimum of a total that was around $55, figuring it's nice to have a local bank and, at age 73, that's another place I can put my RMD withdrawals from my pretax IRA retirement plan. I never received statements on these small accounts and never paid much attention to them until this year, when I'm turning 73 (so I need to start withdrawing significant $$ from my IRA's and I'm thinking of depositing some of those withdrawals in local banks, like CCCU). In early January, 2026, I tried to login to my account but was locked out. Well, I thought, WTF!? So I went in in person to see what's what and was on the fence about deciding to close the accounts, given the poor online capability of CCCU (I like doing everything banking-wise online). I waited in line for 15 minutes and then presented my account information to the CCCU representative. He said that the account was closed! I said "Closed? What? I never closed that account, and where's my, at least, $50"? He said that accounts that are deemed to be "inactive" are charged $5 per month. So for whatever amount of time (he never told me what is the time period an account is unaccessed for that constitutes "inactive"), they were stealing $5 per month until the account ran out of cash and then they closed it! I did get $1 back from my "member" account. Not sure why they didn't take that too. Note: I *never* received an email or USPS notification that my account was "inactive" or that they would commence their thievery of $5 per month unless I did "something" to make it "active" again. What a surprise. The lesson is that you cannot just have your money on deposit at CCCU. You have to be doing something to make your account(s) be deemed to be "active"... and I'm sure there is some (very) fine print somewhere that says they can take money from your account without informing you in any way. The good part of this is that I learned about their practices (mal-practices if you ask me) before committing 10's of thousands of dollars a year to any account(s) or CD's or other investment vehicles at Collins Community Credit Union. I'm not sure how they even stay in business. My advice: stay away... go anywhere else. Don't trust them at all... ever. read more

Years ago I tried to deposit a check from a local bank, from my daughter, and Collins CU insisted they needed a 7 day hold, so I asked Greenstate if they would put a hold on it, they said no. So I started banking with Greenstate but was too lazy to move my bill pay... Now, I attempt to get a HELOC and jump thru all their hoops and then "underwriters" say I have to have a fixed HE (not allowing me to get LOC). Since I didn't need the money immediately, it made no sense to me! I asked Greenstate about same HELOC and they said no problem. Adios Collins CU. read more

Secured my home loan through collins and was told my payments would automatically be deducted on the 15th. Come to find that their payments are always due on the 1st. The mortgage broker never once disclosed that my payment would be considered 14 days later until I started to receive late payment phone calls from collections FOUR YEARS LATER!!!! read more

Would give zero stars if possible. We had a construction loan with Collins. We discovered that they made an error and over paid our builder $89K. When I spoke to Sara at the bank she was apologetic and helpful during our initial conversation. She informed me that they would rectify the situation immediately and that we would receive the money with interest. We never received the money from Collins. They later informed us that they were not going to give us the money even though it was their mistake. Instead, they suggested that we try to get the money back from our builder. I hate this bank so much. I was approved for a car loan through this bank. I thought I was getting approved by another bank (one I wanted), but SURPRISE, I got this one. It's been a nightmare from day one. They don't have automatic transfer payments from outside banks and since I don't bank with them that means I have to write a check and remember to mail it each month. I do all my other bills online or have them on auto-pay, so literally just this one bill and there is no option. The online banking is a nightmare and their site doesn't work. I have tried every possible username I would ever pick and nothing works. The link to click on when you forget your username doesn't work. Nothing. I'm locked out and of course when I call they want info that I can't give them because I can't get into the account! I need to get this loan to another bank before I lose my damn mind. read more

I am only giving one star because I can't go any lower. My father is 79 years old and was sick with pneumonia and has also been deemed disabled. He paid for gap insurance which covered his auto loan if something were to happen to him. Collins repossessed his vehicle in the middle of the night even though they knew they were going to receive the payments from his gap insurance and then told us that he can have his car back for $400 that they had to pay to have it towed away. Now they closed his bank account because they say he still owes them money which he does not because the gap insurance is paying them every month for a vehicle they repossessed and sold. DO NOT BANK HERE THEY WILL SCREW YOU OVER. Thy are also very rude! My daughter also had a loan through here for her vehicle which was damaged in a storm and her insurance paid off the loan but they continued to take her payment from her other bank and opened a savings account without her knowledge until she called them and then they told her bout it. read more

Sigh, I have banked with Collins for almost 8 years and have suffered through all of it. Continuous issues stemming from their poor customer communication, horrible user experience on their website, and their disastrous app and text notifications that send incorrect information to their users. From being 20 questioned about where and how I received legitimate checks, to asking someone to review my budgets and financial planning with me and they all just stared at me? Seriously, such poor communication has cost me lots of random charges and fees - and their willingness to help alleviate the situation is even worse. In the middle of the night my car was repossessed by CCCU. My Payments were always on time and never missed a payment. I called the bank and they said they took it because I didn't sign my 7/8/20 money order. Since when do you sign money orders issued by the post office and why did they cash all my other money orders?? Now I have to pay $600 just to get my car back!!!! They said they tried to reach me but got no response. I have a blocker on my phone but I got their message and tried calling a few times and got hung up on. I finally called the N. Liberty one the day after my car was taken and got a person who gave me some answers. I'm not paying $600 just to get my car back that I've never missed a Payment on. read more

Has been with Collins Community Credit Union for about 1.5 years. I went to the Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines, IA location inside Pricechopper grocery store. I stopped by to inquire about car loan and I have had the best experience with this credit union. Taylor Clausen, the assistant branch manager at this location, went above and beyond to help me in the following: 1) Low interest car loan: I have stellar credit score, have been independent since I was 18, and was in grad school full-time. Even though I have great credit scores, I could not obtain a car loan since I do not have income. Taylor helped me secure a car loan with very low interest rate. Unfortunately, I had to get a co-signer to secure a car loan. But Taylor made the process so much easier. 2) Insider look at purchasing vehicles: Initially I was looking at this 2009 car. As someone who knows very little about cars, he gave me tips on how to properly look at my actual vehicle value and informed me I was over-paying for this 2009 car. He even called the car dealership. Eventually, I settled on this 2015 vehicle. Taylor walked me through step-by-steps to walk out of that car dealership without being duped into buying the dealership's services (i.e. their own car loan with "low" rates, insurance, etc). I walked into that car dealership prepared. Even the car salesman said, "wow, you are very well-prepared". They ran my credit and gave me the sales pitch that they can match Collin's low car loan rates. And nope. They cannot match it. They also low-balled me into just giving me $500 for my current vehicle at the time. And I showed them that my car was worth at least $1500. And yes, they are surprised that I knew how much my car should be worth (and no, I did not use Kelly Blue Book). The dealership gave me $1500 cash value for the vehicle I was selling. I would highly recommend Collins Community Credit Union. Taylor and his team helped me so much in securing my vehicle. I would recommend to just stop by and look at the rates they offer. Bad experience with my car loan. When I first got the loan it was a difficult process to get automatic payments set up. I've had past car loans (including through small town banks) and have never had an issue. I can't remember why, but for some reason the automatic payments got messed up several months into my loan and I had to physically go into a branch to make a payment once. They overcharged me on my last payment (which I had to call to point out and get reimbursed). When I called the person on the phone asked me to verify my address for security reasons, which was different then what they had on file, but she wasn't paying attention to what I said because it was different but she proceeded to give out my info. Then I had a difficult time getting my title from them. I had to call twice. The second time she claimed it was sent by certified mail the previous day. I asked for a tracking number, which she couldn't provide. When I finally got the title in the mail it was signed and dated 2 days after she told me it was mailed out. So she directly lied to me. If I wouldn't have called I don't know if they would have ever sent me my title. I shouldn't have to follow up to get something that is mine. This was my first experience banking through a credit union and it gave a bad taste in my mouth for wanting to bank with other credit unions. I would not bank through Collins on any type of banking or loan need again. read more

Want to trust that your finances will be handled well - they will NOT be through Collins Community Credit Union. We financed our vehicle through Collins. When it came time to trade-in the vehicle, I called to obtain the payoff, the per diem, and the address to which the payoff should be mailed. The sales representative even tried to talk me into financing the new vehicle through Collins; apparently there were no notes taken of this phone call made to my account. Eight weeks later, I received a call from Collins Credit Solutions informing me that my past due loan is now negatively impacting my credit. 1. I NEVER paid my loan past due, the payments were made automatically every month 2. Had notes been taken regarding my inquiry to a loan payoff amount, the CU surely could have connected some dots I informed the CSR that the vehicle had been traded in and that I had called months ago for the payoff information, by now they should have received payment. I was asked to call the dealership. Long story short, the dealership provided me with the last name of the recipient as well as the day and time the check was received by the CU. I researched online to confirm this last name matched an employee of the CU. 1. The mailroom employee didn't recall receiving the check, "The Couriers know me and probably just assigned my name to the scan"...supposedly, the scanned mail that day consisted of four envelopes of which none were from my dealer but yet, the envelope was scanned as received and signed for by the employee. 2. Assuming this CU could have connected the dots was clearly far above expectations because, having worked in banking myself and now in Quality Assurance, they apparently have NO procedure on receiving mail nor verification. They do not verify receipt records against a courier log - simply confirming with the courier (before the courier leaves) that they have, in hand, the number of packages which the courier scanned as delivered would be a simple verification. How in the hell does this bank audit the process?! If this CU cannot perform a simple task such as verify mail received (I do this at my own home through the USPS informed delivery app) how in the hell can you trust that they will handle your finances? It wasn't until I called out Collins for THEIR complete oversight that they became willing to contact the dealership themselves to ask that another check be issued to them (this was after I was asked to contact the dealership three times on their behalf - somewhere in my sixty hour work week). In the meantime, we have made our lawyer aware if in case this does negatively impact our credit as Collins initially threatened. I DO NOT recommend their services. read more

TAKE YOUR BANKING ELSEWHERE!!!! Worst banking experience I've EVER had! Paid off my vehicle but NEVER received my title. 4 weeks... 6 weeks... Multiple phone calls... 8 weeks and more phone calls and having to explain the situation all over each time... 10 weeks and more phone calls... It's as if the second they hung up the phone they had complete amnesia of what was discussed. I had moved to a new state and was unable to register my vehicle with the title and was forced to drive around on expired plates. Even when I explained this all there was ZERO sense of urgency and I was even promised an overnight delivery, took off work and stayed at home all afternoon to sign for it but guess what.... NEVER SHOWED! They did NOT overnight it or email me the tracking number as promised. Finally received the title after a complaint to the BBB and having to threaten them with theft of property as they were illegally in possession of my property after they failed to deliver it in the Iowa DOT regulated 30 days following completion of my financial agreement. read more

This so called Credit Union approved us for an RV loan one day and the next day changed their mind for no reason. We asked for the reason and got absolutely no answer. Just for the record, we were putting down 50% of the cost of the RV. We then went to Dupaco and were approved in 2 hours, and we put down only 10% and now have a new RV. Apparently, I needed to submit a note from my mother and the President. I could never speak with a representative and it took them a week to reply to my emails. these people are liars and are the worst to deal with....girlfriend fell upon hard times and they came and repossessed her car....she called her dad who said he would help her out.....she called and asked them if he could pay by credit card over the phone...they told her yes....he calls to give them the CC #....and they tell him he CAN'T pay by credit card!......he then asks if he can wire them the money....they said yes....so he goes to WalMart to wire them the $$...and they tell him that Collins CCU doesn't have an account with them, so he can't.....he's in Chicago...so girlfriend drives on a Saturday morning to meet him halfway and he gives her the cash to get the car paid up....she beats it back to the credit union and pays them the cash....only to be told that "Star", the lady she has been dealing with is the only one that can release the car, and she is off that day!....she would have to wait till Monday....yet....the guy she is dealing with calls "Star" right in front of her and talks to her to see if there is anyone else that can release the car and she is told no....so she goes the entire weekend without her car.....so....9:00am Monday morning, she is sitting in Collin's CCU parking lot, waiting for them to open up....and go figure..."Star" is not there yet....so she calls the other number given....and they tell her that they can release her car for her!!.....why couldn't they do that on Saturday??....WTF!.....then they give her the wrong address of the company who has her vehicle. She drives to that address....and the company isn't even there anymore.....luckily she had their phone #...and they gave her the right address..... These people were the rudest people to work with....even to her father who was being very patient and nice and WANTING to give them money......they could give a SH*T less of the customers.....stay away from these people.....they suck! read more

Worst company I've ever worked with I got a car a little longer than 3 months ago and have been trying to set up auto pay and they made me send them 4 voided checks over that 3 months now they said they can't use it and need all new paperwork. And they have never called me back they also put u on hold wen you ask for a manager then never pick back up. Ive spent hours on the phone with them. They are trying to nickle and dime people by charging late fees and a 15 doller charge if u call it in. I called to make a payment because I was blocked out of account for some reason. I used the call me back option, they never called. Called them back, they unlocked my account or so they said. Still can't pay my payment. So we called again to pay over the phone because it is going to be late, no problem, it only cost an additional $15.00. I broke my ankle a couple months ago, and have a very physical job. I've been unable to pay my bills, and you can imagine that, to the people burdened with paying them for me, the car note didn't come first. I have kept in close contact with the bank, and they have been pretty unkind to me, despite my best efforts. A woman threatened to repossess my car, even though I've offered every alternative solution I can think of. I figured out a way to make the payment, and called her THREE TIMES, left voicemails, and she never responded. I will never do anything here again. We would like to put some extra money toward the principal, but it turns out that we can ONLY put the extra money toward principal if we pay ON THE SAME DAY that our regular payment is due. At the end of November we moved back to Cedar Rapids. On December 2 we went to the main office on 42nd st and opened two checking/savings accounts. We were told that we could get one book of checks free for each checking account. We said OK, we do most things on-line so a book would last a while. A couple of weeks later I called to inquire when we could expect the checks and was told it looked like there was no problem with our order and that it would take 10-15 working days. We received the checks for one of the accounts on the 18th and waited until the 22nd and still no checks for the primary account. I went back in and talked to another person and was told that the checks were never ordered. This is good customer service? I think not! read more

Dumb staff that are worthless. I have had 5 auto loans with this bank since I turned 16 and am know 37. Third auto loan they have jacked up. My customer service rep Josh told me yep you are set up for automatic withdrawal same day each month. I get a notice in my mail almost 4 months later that my loan is in default. So because Josh didn't do his job I had to kick out 3 months worth of payments that I couldn't afford to do. Because if I didn't pay they would repo my car and I have an 800 credit score folks. Seems that what the customer wants/needs makes no difference. The employee was not enthusiastic about me opening another checking account. Wow. More to the story but the important part is the poor customer service. **I read an earlier review that noted Collins uses outdated technology, that was another part of my terrible experience; they lack the ability to scan routing codes and make instant debits like Walmart does when you present a check. read more

This is absolutely the worst financial institution I have ever encountered. My wife and I bought a truck in October and financed it through them. Because she has no major credit history we put the truck in her name first and mine second. Well I am just as much of an owner as she is and treated horrible by this bank. I am the one who pays for that truck. If I stopped it would be repossessed. I'm not allowed to find out anything about my truck because I'm not primary. Since I can't find out my truck then I can stop paying for it since it's my money that does. I told them they could repossess it. The bank representative said he wouldn't recommend that and I said I wouldn't recommend them not discussing a loan that I am responsible for too. My car broke down, and was too expensive to fix, so I called and told the bank I needed to pay the pay-off balance on the loan so that I could get the title. The lady told me the EXACT amount that I needed to pay, so I paid it. She said I should get the title in about 2 weeks. 2 weeks later, I come to find out that my loan was still open with a balance of 15 cents. So the title was sitting there the whole time I was waiting. I called and let them know I was upset with how they handled my loan situation, and the girl on the phone was extremely rude to me and told me that if I knew how loans work, I would know the interest is added daily, and since it took a day for my payment to go through, the interest got added. HELLO, I am not the one working at the bank, the person who told me the payoff balance should have added that into the amount! I cannot believe that woman had the nerve to say that to me.
