The selection at this store is quite vast, but can feel sometimes like a random selection of items with very little order to structure to the place. The layout is quite crowded for a store of this size, with clothes often dumped in heaps on the floor or thrown onto the display shelves in disorder. The quality of the clothes is also quite poor - I accidentally bought a top in Primark that had somehow managed to be sewn with the straps entangled, and was virtually unwearable. The staff seem friendly and the service is good, but the queues are often quite long and the temperature in the store is often uncomfortably hot for no explicable reason. Of course, the prices of items are, as would be expected, low.

There is a shoe section but this is predominantly for women. This is quite a small Primark compared to some I've been in. The main problems in this store are that in the summer it is like stepping into a sauna, as there is no air conditioning, and believe me, it gets HOT! Laura and I go way back....back to a time when Laura had stores all over the United States. I've had some very special times with Laura Ashley. I was donning a Laura Ashley frock on the afternoon that I kissed Keith Richards on that cold January day in Pittsburgh. When I got my very first apartment, and no ordinary JCPenny's or KMart shower curtain would do for my bathroom, Laura Ashley cabbage rose fabric became apart of a very special shower curtain sewing project that my Gram and Aunt Helen helped me with....and there have been countless others. So back to present day. The brand still oozes femininity, so it's best when it's contained to small doses in a home's decor. The quality is impeccable. I'm not that old, but I still have several pieces of clothing in my closet that I've had for at least a third of my life that are in flawless condition and that I would wear for a special occasion. I think that's saying something, when compared to most chain store brands where the clothing articles last for about a season before they look like crap. Like every retailer now, they're hurting. and offered a 25% discount on a bohemian (non floral) skirt that I picked up today. I think the line is still terrific, and just a touch more modern. When I look through my apartment and closet, lots has come from this brand so I miss not having one in the US.

You do really have to have a specific aesthetic to enjoy what this store offers. It really is a dusty-rose floral motif that most men won't enjoy. But that's not what we were after, as it was a sofa hunt that day, which leads me to my disappointment. Their sofas don't come in long lengths, they do a two-person and a three-person they claim, though sitting on it, it's the size of a slightly longer two-person at any other store. You won't find anything terribly large if that's what you're looking for, but the workers weren't very helpful, they were all kind of off touching things and making sure that a wall of tassels were aligned when the store was dead and we were looking around with puzzled faces because we were wondering if they sold anything other than loveseats and floral throw pillows. Maybe they sensed we weren't their target demographic and decided to not bother with us, though I might have been.. .I might have been shopping for my mother, or I myself might have a shabby-chic entryway that I was redecorating... ok, I didn't, but I *might* have!

What caught my eye on passing by one evening was a fantastic Colclough's 'Cottage & Stream' china tea-cup and saucer; I'm a huge fan of this particular Colclough vintage china range as I have many happy memories of having afternoon tea with my beloved Granna when I was a little girl! I was warmly greeted by Holly and Steven, the owners of Nicholas & Steele and offered a cup of tea what a lovely way to shop and do business! Of course, the tea was made in a gorgeous 1930's Crinoline Lady teapot (periwinkle blue?) and served up in vintage bone china tea-cups and saucers. Love it, love it, love it this is customer service at it's best, methinks! Holly and Steven are rightly proud of their business which, as I found out, had only opened on Saturday the day when I had spied their vintage treasures. The amount of love and attention they have poured into every single detail of their business is evident for all to see; they are undeniably very talented and offer a scrumptious range of products. The charming dressers are all hand-painted by them and I've already picked the one I wish to see in my home! At the back of the shop I spied an incredible chest of drawers painted in a striking union-jack flag effect, simply stunning. The union jack flag was similarly echoed on the front of the shop's counter, in pastel shades to complement the vintage treasures for sale. Nicholas & Steele not only sell vintage tea-sets and other assorted vintage afternoon tea treasures (cupcake stands etc.), but they also have an amazing array of vintage kitchenware (including cutesy jelly moulds) and stunning antique embroidered and/or lace tablecloths and table mats; Holly is very creative and also hand-makes bunting from vintage table linen that are no longer usable and other antique materials she has picked up along the way. There is also an assortment of trinkets and jewellery so a perfect place to shop for unusual gifts too. I do like the idea of a one-stop shop ! Holly is also an artist and has plans for offering creative workshops over the coming months, so do pop by and say hello to them in Durham Road, SW20.
