The hotel is very outdated, my room was on the ground floor and smelt a little damp. I had to ask to have the heating on they turn it on from the reception desk!? This happened throughout my 2 night stay the heating would turn itself off and I would have to call reception to turn it back on again. Very strange and also annoying that you can't control it yourself!! On my first nights stay, I noticed the mattress was fairly hard and bumpy, it was probably quite old. It had no proper mattress cover to cushion the mattress. Also, the sound along the corridor and between rooms travels very easily. My neighbours bathroom was right next to my bed head, so I could hear them washing and flushing the toilet late at night. Once nodding off, I realised every 2 minutes or so I could hear a faint banging sound and couldn't work out what it was. Having taken me a long time to get to sleep, I was woken up at 4:30am as it was so cold due to the heating in my room being turned off. I also noticed the strange banging sound was still going on I called reception to get the heating turned on and was told it doesn't come on till 6am. The place is clean it just could do with a bit of a lift / revamp, it shocked me a little at how dated everything is both in the rooms and the restaurant. There was however a flat screen tv in the room which looks new and works great with lots of channels and a kettle to make drinks. I noticed on my second evening when returning to the room, they hadn't actually washed my teacup properly as there were tea stains in it they'd obviously just rinsed it in my sink The hotel provides complimentary wi-fi which is a good speed. The staff are really friendly you can't really fault the service (although I did wait a good 10 minutes to have my order taken at the restaurant when dining alone, that is not ok!). The second night I had room service, partly because the receptionist seemed unwilling to take one diner through to the restaurant at 6:45pm (I was told dinner was served from 6:30). The restaurant was however really disappointing on the first night so I didn't mind too much, although the thought of staying in the damp room all evening was a little depressing. The menu has a good selection but a large selection of it seems to be wrapped in bacon! I was given a complimentary roll with butter and a 'free starter' which was a tiny little taster of ham hock. A tasty surprise but nothing special. I had stuffed mushrooms to start these were wrapped in bacon the bacon was fatty, chewy and not pleasant at all, I had to leave most of it. Not a great recipe really disappointed with that. For main I had 'Chicken Fondant' again, disappointing. the skin looked tasty but was soggy, really confused as to what they'd done with this chicken. It was very 'tender', like it had been poached or soaked in water prior to cooking but left a strange taste to the meat. The potato fondant was strange and unpleasant essentially undercooked, plain mashed potato in a log shape. The one good thing was a gorgeous flavoured puree on the plate, definitely wasn't enough of that. I ordered a side salad of rocket and parmesan with bacon as the main doesn't come with veg. It was ok, but not a very refined dish and the bacon could have been done better / used lardons. There were crutons too, and after half of them I realised they just tasted like oily fried bread. Not one to leave anything on my plate, unfortunately in this instance I did.

The hotel opened in 2018, and still feels pretty new and modern to this day. The location is fantastic for Birmingham Airport, it is a couple of minutes away from the main Terminal, next to the West Midlands Police building. From the Airport, you can get the Air-Rail link which takes you to Birmingham International in just 90 seconds. From here you are able to get a train into New Street, which gets you into Birmingham city centre in just 10-15 minutes, you also have connections into the NEC (huge exhibition centre) and Resorts World (casino, outlet mall and multiple restaurants and bars) You can see my reviews for these locations at Birmingham Airport - https://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/birmingham-airport-bhx-birmingham-2 NEC - https://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/nec-birmingham-2?osq=NEC Resorts World - https://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/resorts-world-marston-green The room rates were competitive, I personally only decided to stay at the Airport as on this occasion it was cheaper than other Hilton's in Birmingham, wanting to make the most of my Gold Hilton Honors status (Free cooked breakfast or 750 bonus points at a Garden Inn). The average price is around £80-100, although the rates can obviously exceed that, looking at rates in November 2021, it does reach over £250 and even up to £375, at least once a week. I would say the hotel is worth nowhere near that price and if I had paid that sum, I'd be demanding my money back. This is not the most luxurious of hotels, but it is a good, sold airport hotel. The room had very good noise-cancelling, the big thick windows and doors, meant no noise was heard externally, the only internal noise was after 11:30 am when housekeeping was working the room, which wasn't too bad. Sadly, my room was overlooking the car park, rather than the run-way. I think they should give you the option or ability to reserve a room with a better view when using the online check-in. My room was comfortable, it was a little basic but still had everything I needed, the 25 sq meters room was larger compared to the city centre, it had a comfortable bed, blackout blinds, a desk, a mini-fridge, a large TV, plenty of plug sockets with USB charging. The staff here were very friendly and happy to help, the lobby did always seem super busy with people checking in and out at all hours, but that's the Airport for you. It seems to be full of travellers and flight crew, and then there's me just staying at the Airport for the sake of it! I did not use the food and beverage services in the hotel, but that wasn't through a lack of trying. I was upset that breakfast ended very early on the weekend at 10 am (Most hotels generally run breakfast until 11), food also stops at 10 pm at night, they do have a couple of sandwiches at Reception but with the kitchen closed and nowhere nearby to get food (The limited choice of shops/restaurants at the airport are still closing early, generally around the last flight and before 10 pm), this meant I went to sleep on an empty stomach. I did have a couple of problems with my stay: - The hotel is one of the few hotels I've noticed which still takes a card hold, having a debit card meant I am unable to use the funds until it is released (generally takes 30 days), the hold is done per day meaning on a one night stay, two holds are taken. At £50 each this isn't cheap - Food and Beverage issues as previously discussed. - Housekeeping entered my room when I was still sleeping, I was told this was because they were not aware I had a late checkout however this was still frustrating that they couldn't wait for me to check out. - The bathroom door did not shut properly, no big deal as I was staying on my own. 4* - Overall, I was super impressed by the HGI at Birmingham Airport, it's a strong four-rating for sure, there are obviously some issues that need to be addressed, but I would definitely stay here again

It's nice that they leave you that note in the bathroom reminding you that they have extra toiletries downstairs...forgot your toothbrush, your razor, maybe some feminine stuff?? They've got it downstairs for you and would be glad to help you out. Awesome, but here's what's different...When I go overseas, I'm always reminded of that episode of the "Dave Chappelle Show" where he suggests that "White people don't use washcloths..." Where are the washcloths, really? Don't worry Holiday Inn Express, so many hotels are like that...And then when I want to wash my face, there is no bar soap, just this a pumpable reservoir of liquid soap fastened to the wall. Okay, I get it...but now it's shower time. Look around and there's another reservoir filled with hair shampoo, face soap, and liquid deodorant soap...Wait, it's all the same stuff!! Okay, the rant is over...the fact is, I enjoyed staying here... __________________ Notes: -The staff was EXTREMELY helpful...whether it be in arranging transportation, suggesting local restaurants & shopping, etc...or even one night around 1AM, I needed to purchase a some computer accessories, and not only did they arrange a taxi for me, but they called one of few places in Birmingham that was open 24 hour to make sure the item was in stock, etc... - There is a hotel bar down stairs...open until around 4AM...note that late in the evening, you MUST bill your drinks to your room as they no longer accept cash or credit card payment. - Breakfast was pretty reasonable, and like all Holiday Inn Express locations, it was included in the cost of your stay. - Location was about 5 minutes away from the NEC...great! But keep in mind that the way that this part of Birmingham is laid out, nothing is within walking distance...there is one restaurant, but everything else seemed at least 10-20 minutes away... - Wireless internet is expensive at £15 for 24 hours...there are different rates, but there are limitations... - The hotel was otherwise, quite budget friendly... - The special wipes on the back of the toilet, for the ladies, was a nice touch...

I arrived late in the night, just before midnights got I There was limited staff on duty but the name got shift was swift enough to get me into my room and even put me in a room nearer the restaurant, reception, lobby and car park. There was no wifi in my room which in 2013 I don't find acceptable; I travel with an iPad and you can't plug that in to an ethernet cable. It turns out there was free wifi in the lobby but I wasn't told that at check-in and there was no information about it in my room. I would have gladly sat and done some work in the lobby if I'd known. I was there on business and in my business I NEED internet. The check-in staff were friendly enough but the wait staff in the restaurant I don't think have ever heard the phrase "the customer is always right." Again it's an airport hotel--I tempered my expectations of the extremely over-priced food. My colleagues had a few simple complaints and each time they were met with wait staff that challenged them instead of just correcting the mistake. The food was okay but not near worth what was charged. The room itself was fine but the hallways were musty and smelly. The TV in the room did not get any of the terrestrial channels clearly--the picture was fuzzy, would come in and out of colour and pop and crackle. Considering I had no wifi to stream tv as I normally would this was less than ideal. The shower temperature did not regulate. It intermittently would go from scalding to freezing with no warning. While low water pressure is something I might expect in a hotel ever changing water temperature is not. My room was very noisy with the obvious boom of aircraft taking off punctuating the night and morning but also it seemed I was below a conference room perhaps as I was also woken up by the noise of furniture being rearranged above me with banging and scraping. I don't like writing bad reviews. The free shuttle to/from the NEC/Aiport/Station was nice and it was great to be able to have breakfast in bed included in my room cost but again the coffee that came with my breakfast was awful. No amount of sugar or milk could make it drinkable. It's an airport hotel--don't plan on eating on site, bring ear plugs and be prepared for limited internet access in room (if you do have a cable you'll need to pay £15 to access it!) and it would be a good place if you have an early flight I guess.

There are a few bonbydazzler's on the menu; melon with griddled pineapple, coconut and basil anyone? What were they thinking there- like the worst ready, steady, cook! mystery bag ever, poor Ainsley would be spinning in his chef's retirement home. We were sent out an amuse bouché of fried risotto balls which had so little flavour they just offered an unpleasant texture. Not very amusing at all, served with a cliche of balsamic vinegar. Then we were delivered olives and bread with olive oil and balsamic, meh... I started with the Ham Hock, piccalilli and sourdough. It tasted pretty good but was presented like a raw burger with a squashed slug across the plate. Far too much meat, the balance was well off, although it seemed to be the only starter to come without a coating of balsamic. The cheddar and onion tart was apparently nice but would improve with some onion chutney not drenched in the damn balsamic! Main course was apparently coq au vin. Not as I have ever had it before though. Only one bit of the chicken was cooked in wine the other a cheffy bone in supreme of chicken that was pan fried. There were a few chunks of gammon, some enoki mushrooms some undercooked shallots, leathery leeks and passable mash. This dish was largely free of balsamic but had its trendy cousin pea shoots liberally sprinkled over. This bastardised coq au vin wasn't really to my liking- had it all been cooked together in the traditional style it would have been great, unfortunately the chef wasted his time and effort cooking everything separately. Other meals largely met with similar criticisms, the salmon came with turned vegetables which looked totally naff! I opted for the local cheese board which was okay. I can't say how local the cheeses were as there was no information so I'll just take their word for it. After all Birmingham is well known for its dairy produce... It was served with celery, chutney and walnut bread, call me old fashioned but I'll take a Carr's water biscuit every time thank you! It was balsamic free however- I can only assume they had used it all in the previous courses. Other desserts were similarly hit or miss, the fruit selection even had star fruit on it which I assumed had become extinct as I haven't seen any since the 90's. The other main gripe was it took two and a half hours from sitting down to finishing dessert which was ridiculous. I understand that we were a table of eight but it was hardly busy, if the kitchen stopped buggering around with everything it would have taken half the time! The waitresses were very pleasant, if a little disorganised. The meal would have been much improved if they simplified the meals and stopped trying to impress with outdated fads and additions. I would happily pay a premium for a quality meal but this really wasn't! On a random point the light fittings were the worst I have ever seen; a chandelier surrounded by a semi transparent tube of plastic with the colouring of the bottom of a CD. If they employed an interior designer I hope their ideas book was sealed and buried, the designer sent to Broadmoor hospital for the criminally insane.
